Which room to book at Hotel San Anselmo

The Double, sold as Classic on the website and as Double or Twin on the hotel's own booking page. It is 16 square metres, with antique furniture in the classic style, a marble bathroom with a tub or a shower, and it is the first tier the website describes with a balcony. Two square metres more than the Economy, for the room the hotel is photographed with.

Every room they sell

  1. Economy Double or Twin

The booking page's own badge calls it the cheapest. Shower only, classic furniture, and often unavailable.

    14 m²Ground floor

  2. Double Budget Single Use

The Double Budget sold to one guest: the same courtyard, the same parquet, one person.

    15 m²Internal courtyard

  3. Double Budget

Parquet floors and classic furniture on the internal courtyard, and just as often unavailable.

  4. Double Single Use

The standard room for one. Sixteen square metres, elegant and classic in the hotel's words, and the sensible single.

    16 m²

  5. Twin

Two single beds on the same 16 square metres as the Double, classic and modern furniture. Ask for a balcony here too.

    16 m²

  7. Deluxe Double Single Use

The Deluxe for one guest: four square metres more than the single, modern design pieces and the inlaid marble bathroom.

    20 m²

  8. Deluxe Twin

Two beds on 20 square metres, classic furniture with modern comforts. The quiet buy if floor area matters more than a balcony.

    20 m²

  9. Deluxe Double

Metropolitan-chic, says the hotel: antique pieces with modern design and the inlaid marble bathroom. About 30 euros a night above the Double in winter 2027.

    20 m²

  10. Junior Suite

On the website but not on the booking page, and its page carries the Deluxe text. Ask before you pay.

  11. Suite

Classic antique furniture, sold without a floor area. The most exclusive, says a badge shared with the Deluxe Double; the least described.

Why this one

The ladder is four sizes and the names are the smallest part of it. The hotel's own booking page gives 14 square metres for the ground-floor Economy, 15 for the courtyard-facing Double Budget, 16 for the Double and the Twin, and 20 for the three Deluxe variants, and it stops there: the Suite has no published area and the Junior Suite is not offered there at all. Within that, 16 is the step that matters. It is the first tier the website describes with a balcony, its bathroom is marble with a tub or a shower rather than the Economy's shower only, and it is where the antique furniture the hotel is photographed with begins. It is also usually the cheapest room actually on sale, at 95.20 euros a night for two on 20 to 22 January 2027.

Above it, the Deluxe buys four square metres and the inlaid marble bathroom for about 30 euros a night more, which is the clearest price-to-space step in the house and worth it if you will spend any daylight in the room. Below it, the Economy and the Double Budget are the numbers that make the hotel look cheap on a search page and are often unavailable. The single-use rungs are the same rooms sold to one guest, not smaller rooms, and the Deluxe Double Single Use is the best solo room in the villa if the difference is small on your dates.

Ask for
Ask for a Double or Twin with a balcony, and ask which room number you are being given, because the rooms are individual and 16 square metres is a category figure. If the decorated rooms are the reason you are booking, ask by the names the listings use, Gold, Romeo and Juliet or Poetry, the last with the Baudelaire poem across the plaster in the hotel's own photograph. Say whether you want the tub or the shower, since the Classic page offers one or the other without saying which room has what, and ask for a floor above the ground if you end up in the Economy.
Avoid
Skip the Economy unless the rate is the only consideration: 14 square metres, ground floor, shower only, and often unavailable anyway. The Double Budget is a square metre more, faces the internal courtyard, and is no easier to book. Do not take the 20 percent prepaid rate for dates that might move, because it is non-refundable and the January floor is already low, and do not book the Junior Suite unseen, because its own page carries the Deluxe text and the booking page does not list it.

Suites against rooms

Neither suite carries an inclusion the rooms do not get: breakfast is included on every category and nothing else is. The Suite appears on the booking page with a line of description and no floor area, and its page on the website has photographs and no text at all, under a heading that reads Junior Suite. Treat it as a decorated room of unstated size rather than a suite with perks, ask for the square metres in writing before paying the difference, and compare that figure with the 20 square metre Deluxe, which the hotel does describe.

Our verdict

Book it for the Aventine and the villa, not for facilities it does not have. A themed Double with a balcony, breakfast in the garden and dinner walked down to Testaccio, at a rate that leaves the money for the city. Check the square metres and the room number first.
