The 10 best hotels in Orlando

Only ten make the cut. Orlando is two worlds of theme parks, Walt Disney World and Universal, and the hotel you choose decides which gates you reach first and which park perks come with the room. These are ten of them, from the monorail at Disney's Grand Floridian to a gate into Epic Universe and an art hotel in Winter Park, priced from under two hundred dollars a night to well over a thousand, each here for a different reason.

Editor’s note

This edit starts with the choice between Disney and Universal, because in Orlando the room decides the park perks: early entry, evening hours, Express queues or a gate into Epic Universe. Beside icons on the Seven Seas Lagoon and at Universal's Italian harbour, it sets a family base at Cabana Bay, a smart-money pick on Disney's Skyliner and, for the days away from the parks, a quiet art hotel in Winter Park.

Not a rankingTen hotels, one at a time.

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: The resort across Seven Seas Lagoon
The iconWalt Disney World, Magic Kingdom area
1 / 10

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Disney's Victorian grand hotel on Seven Seas Lagoon, one monorail stop to Magic Kingdom, with its fireworks across the water.

Why go. Magic Kingdom's evening fireworks over Cinderella Castle, across the lagoon from the resort's marina, where the show's soundtrack is played.

The catch. The entry Resort View rooms look over the courtyard, the marina or the pools, and like the Water View and Theme Park View rooms they are in the outer lodges, not the main building. On a Tuesday in January the lagoon view costs about $60 a night more and the Magic Kingdom view about $200 more. Read it →

$$$$From about $855 a night

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort: The Spanish Revival tower beside the lake
The complete resortWalt Disney World, Magic Kingdom area
1 / 10

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort

A Four Seasons inside Walt Disney World with its own lazy river and slides on a five-acre play island, an adults-only pool, a spa and golf.

Why go. Explorer Island: a lazy river through palms and tropical planting, two 242-foot-long slides from a "ruined" mansion's tower, a splash zone and a beach-entry family pool, kept for resort guests.

The catch. Park days run on the resort's timetable: free coaches go once an hour to each of the four Disney parks, with no monorail, Skyliner, boat or walking route, and transfers to Disney Springs or Universal cost extra. Disney gives the resort its 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry but not Extended Evening Hours. Read it →

$$$$From about $1,395 a night

Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort: The Lazy River Courtyard pool, with the lazy river beyond
The family oneUniversal Orlando
1 / 10

Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Universal's retro beach-motel resort for families: suites for six with a kitchenette, a lazy river, bowling and early park entry.

Why go. Family Suites of 430 sq ft (40 m²) for up to six, with a sliding partition, a sofa bed and a kitchenette with a microwave.

The catch. Extras add up: self-parking is $26 plus tax a night, tubes for the lazy river are sold rather than lent, and Galaxy Bowl charges for its lanes, which must be booked. Read it →

$From about $180 a night

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge: A giraffe on the savanna below the lodge's balconies
The viewWalt Disney World, Animal Kingdom area
1 / 10

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

A thatched game lodge on the edge of Walt Disney World, with giraffes and antelope outside the Savanna View balconies and zebras on some of its savannas.

Why go. Giraffes and antelope on the savanna below a Savanna View balcony.

The catch. Disney sells the savanna only with the Savanna View rooms. The entry Resort View faces what Disney describes as rooftops or the car park, and on an early-February Tuesday the Savanna View costs $740 a night before tax against $527, $213 more. Read it →

$$$From about $525 a night

Disney's Yacht Club Resort: Stormalong Bay's sand-bottomed pool at dusk
The pool oneWalt Disney World, Epcot area
1 / 10

Disney's Yacht Club Resort

A shingle-style yacht club on Crescent Lake, with Stormalong Bay's three-acre pool complex and Epcot a 9-minute walk away.

Why go. Stormalong Bay: a sand-bottomed pool, a lazy river and a 230-foot-long slide from the mast of a life-size shipwreck.

The catch. The entry Resort View rooms look over gardens, rooftops or the car park, and guests have found theirs facing a roof or the bus stop. The Water View, over Crescent Lake or the quiet pool, cost $118 a night more on a February weeknight in 2027, and Disney sells the view over the Stormalong Bay lagoons only with Club Level. $$$From about $655 a night

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel: Portofino Bay, the hotel's own harbour
The insider oneUniversal Orlando
1 / 10

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

A replica Ligurian harbour at Universal, where the room key doubles as Express Unlimited and a boat runs to CityWalk.

Why go. Universal Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure on every guest's room key, until the parks close on the day you leave.

The catch. It is dear, and parking comes on top: the entry room costs about $795 a night before 12.5% tax on a February weeknight and about $1,330 between Christmas and New Year, and self-parking is $36 a night plus tax ($45 for valet). Read it →

$$$$From about $795 a night

Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel: The hotel at the end of Celestial Park
The new oneEpic Universe
1 / 10

Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel

Epic Universe's own hotel, at the end of Celestial Park, with a gate into the park off the lobby.

Why go. A gate off the lobby into Celestial Park: in at opening, and back to your room for a midday break.

The catch. The rooms are small for the money. The entry Standard 2 Queen Beds room is 325 sq ft (30 m²), a fifth guest needs a $35-a-night rollaway, and on a February weeknight the Park View room costs about $200 a night more. Read it →

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes: The spa's adults-only lap pool
The spa oneGrande Lakes
1 / 10

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes

A Mizner-style palazzo with a three-storey spa of 40 treatment rooms, a Greg Norman course and a shared lazy river.

Why go. The Ritz-Carlton Spa: 40 treatment rooms over three floors, with sauna, steam room and a heated adults-only lap pool.

The catch. A $55 nightly resort fee and $58 a night for valet, the only parking at the Ritz, add $113 a night before tax to the room rate. Read it →

$$$From about $480 a night

Disney's Pop Century Resort: The Hippy Dippy Pool at dusk
The smart moneyWalt Disney World, Skyliner area
1 / 10

Disney's Pop Century Resort

Disney's cheapest Skyliner hotel on standard rates: gondolas to Epcot and Hollywood Studios, early park entry and a food court for dinner.

Why go. A Skyliner station 5 minutes' walk from the lobby, with gondolas to Hollywood Studios and Epcot's International Gateway.

The catch. There is no table-service restaurant. The Everything POP food court, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and crowded at peak meal times, Petals Pool Bar and pizza delivered to the room are the choices on site, so order ahead in the My Disney Experience app or plan dinners in the parks. Read it →

$From about $195 a night

The Alfond Inn: The courtyard and glass-domed conservatory at dusk
The escapeWinter Park
1 / 10

The Alfond Inn

Rollins College's art hotel, two blocks from Park Avenue: museums, lakes and a spa for days off from the parks.

Why go. More than 100 works from the Rollins Museum of Art's contemporary collection through the public spaces, rehung every year, with a free monthly tour led by museum staff.

The catch. The hotel runs no park shuttle and its free house cars go only around Winter Park, so the parks mean a car or a taxi, 28 to 31 minutes to Universal Studios and Epic Universe and 42 to 47 minutes to the Disney parks with the roads clear, and more at rush hour. Read it →

Best hotels in Orlando, by what you want

Deciding between two Orlando hotels?

Questions people ask

Good questions about Orlando

Which is the best hotel in Orlando?

None of the ten is "the best". Each is the best for a different reason, and that reason is the tag on its card. Answer three questions in Better Fit and it will pick the one for you.

Which hotel in Orlando is best for a pool?

Disney's Yacht Club Resort. A shingle-style yacht club on Crescent Lake, with Stormalong Bay's three-acre pool complex and Epcot a 9-minute walk away.

What is the best hotel in Orlando for families?

Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Universal's retro beach-motel resort for families: suites for six with a kitchenette, a lazy river, bowling and early park entry.

Which is the best value hotel in Orlando?

Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Universal's retro beach-motel resort for families: suites for six with a kitchenette, a lazy river, bowling and early park entry.

Where should I stay in Orlando?

In Orlando the parks you plan to do decide where you stay, and the first choice is Disney or Universal. At Walt Disney World, in the Magic Kingdom area, Disney's Grand Floridian is one monorail stop from Magic Kingdom, with water taxis and a 19-minute walking path besides, and the Four Seasons, in gated Golden Oak, runs its own free coaches to the parks. In the Epcot area, the Yacht Club is on Crescent Lake, nine minutes' walk from Epcot's International Gateway. Pop Century is five minutes' walk from a Skyliner gondola station, and Animal Kingdom Lodge relies on Disney's buses. A Disney-owned hotel brings Disney's transport, free parking at the hotel and the parks, Lightning Lane passes on sale seven days ahead rather than three (once in the US, Disney's European site says), and Early Theme Park Entry, 30 minutes before opening every day, which the Four Seasons shares. Extended Evening Hours on select nights are for the Deluxe hotels: the Grand Floridian, the Yacht Club and Animal Kingdom Lodge. Disney says both perks run through 2027.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.

Where to base yourself in Orlando

In Orlando the parks you plan to do decide where you stay, and the first choice is Disney or Universal. At Walt Disney World, in the Magic Kingdom area, Disney's Grand Floridian is one monorail stop from Magic Kingdom, with water taxis and a 19-minute walking path besides, and the Four Seasons, in gated Golden Oak, runs its own free coaches to the parks. In the Epcot area, the Yacht Club is on Crescent Lake, nine minutes' walk from Epcot's International Gateway. Extended Evening Hours on select nights are for the Deluxe hotels: the Grand Floridian, the Yacht Club and Animal Kingdom Lodge. Disney says both perks run through 2027.

Universal Orlando is the other base, 23 to 30 minutes' drive from the four Disney hotels here with the roads clear. Its hotel guests get Early Park Admission, up to an hour before opening at select rides, and free shuttle buses. Cabana Bay's leave every 15 minutes, and Islands of Adventure is 22 minutes' walk away. At Loews Portofino Bay, Universal Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure comes with the room, and a water taxi crosses to CityWalk. Universal Helios Grand is the only hotel with its own entrance into Epic Universe, though a ticket is still needed. Away from both, The Ritz-Carlton in Grande Lakes has no park perks but a shuttle to the parks, booked a day ahead, in its resort fee, and The Alfond Inn is in Winter Park, five minutes' walk from Park Avenue, for the days away from the parks.

Orlando International (MCO) has Terminals A and B in one building and Terminal C to the south; at A and B taxis wait on Level 1 and app cars on Level 2. By car from Terminal A's ground transportation level, with the roads clear, The Ritz-Carlton is 21 minutes, the three Universal hotels 22 to 28, The Alfond Inn 30, and the Four Seasons and Disney's four 34 to 39; Terminal C adds 3 to 11 minutes. Mears Connect's shared shuttle serves every Disney-owned hotel for $17.60 an adult, plus a 6% fuel surcharge, and allows 30 to 60 minutes for traffic and stops. Brightline runs south to Miami, not to the parks. A car earns its keep at Grande Lakes and in Winter Park, or for both resorts in one trip; for one resort's parks, its own transport does the work.

All ten are in Orange County, where tax adds 12.5% to a hotel night. Disney's and Universal's own hotels charge no resort fee; The Ritz-Carlton charges $55 a night, the Four Seasons $55 in 2026 and The Alfond Inn $27, each plus tax. Overnight self-parking is free at Disney's own hotels, with valet at $42 a night at the Deluxe ones; Cabana Bay charges $26 plus tax, Portofino Bay and Helios Grand $36, The Ritz-Carlton $58 for valet and The Alfond Inn from $37, and the Four Seasons, valet only, publishes no rate.

The honest part. Orlando is spread out: Magic Kingdom's car park to Epic Universe's is 32 minutes by car with the roads clear, and Animal Kingdom Lodge to The Alfond Inn 44 km (28 miles). By NOAA's averages at the airport, July days reach 33.3°C (92°F) and January's 22.1°C (71.8°F); the National Weather Service says summer afternoons usually bring cloud buildups, and June, at 204 mm (8 inches), is the wettest month. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Prices follow the calendar: before tax, Pop Century's Standard Room is $195 a night midweek from January to early February and $206 in late August, but $235 to $259 from Presidents' Day week, which is also English half-term, into mid-March, $315 over Easter and $359 between Christmas and New Year.
