The 10 best hotels in Los Angeles

Only ten make the cut. Los Angeles is a set of separate towns joined by freeways, and the hotel you choose decides which one your days begin in. These are ten of them, from the sand in Santa Monica and Malibu to the Sunset Strip, Hollywood Boulevard, Silver Lake, Downtown and the Palos Verdes cliffs, priced from a little over two hundred dollars a night to more than a thousand, each here for a different reason.

Editor’s note

This edit starts with the base, because in Los Angeles that choice shapes every day: the beach at Santa Monica and Malibu, Beverly Hills, the Sunset Strip, Hollywood Boulevard, Silver Lake on the Eastside or Downtown. Beside an icon on Sunset Boulevard it sets a family base in the Valley with a free trolley to Universal Studios, and a smart-money pick Downtown, a 1926 hotel with a garden pool at a fraction of West Side prices.

Not a rankingTen hotels, one at a time.

The Beverly Hills Hotel: The pool below the pink hotel
The iconBeverly Hills
1 / 10

The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Pink Palace on Sunset Boulevard, open since 1912 and pink since 1948, where the Polo Lounge, the garden bungalows and a pool of striped loungers and pink cabanas still set the scene.

Why go. Lunch in the Polo Lounge under its candy-striped ceiling or on the palm-shaded patio, with the McCarthy salad.

The catch. Extras sit on top of a four-figure rate. Beverly Hills hotel tax is 14 per cent and the hotel's other city and state levies bring the total to roughly 15.5 to 16 per cent, and parking is $70 a day, which you will want because almost everything is a drive. Read it →

$$$$From about $1,090 a night

Shutters on the Beach: The hotel from Santa Monica Beach
The beach oneSanta Monica
1 / 10

Shutters on the Beach

A beach-house hotel on the sand in Santa Monica, with an ocean-view pool and the pier nine minutes' walk north.

Why go. Directly on the sand, with the paved beach path along the front of the hotel.

The catch. A $60 nightly resort fee plus tax is added to every stay, and overnight valet is $90 a night, so a room that starts around $740 comes to about $930 with the 15 per cent hotel tax, the fee and $11.25 in nightly tourism fees, before the car. Read it →

$$$From about $740 a night

Malibu Beach Inn: Candlelit counter open to the Pacific
The romantic oneMalibu
1 / 10

Malibu Beach Inn

Forty-seven rooms on Carbon Beach, each with a balcony, all but a handful facing straight out to the Pacific, most with a fireplace.

Why go. A balcony in all 47 rooms, and the Pacific straight ahead from all but the King Pier View Rooms.

The catch. Pacific Coast Highway runs directly behind the building, and some guests mention hearing traffic over the surf; the King Pier View Rooms have the highway in view. Ask for a sea-facing room on the third floor, away from the street entrance. Read it →

$$$$From about $755 a night

Terranea Resort: The resort on its Palos Verdes cliffs
The resortPalos Verdes
1 / 10

Terranea Resort

A 102-acre clifftop resort on the Palos Verdes coast: four pools, a spa and a par-3 course above the Pacific.

Why go. Cielo Point, an adults-only (21+) pool above the Pacific, and a family pool with a 140-foot waterslide.

The catch. A $75 resort fee and $75 for overnight valet add up to $150 a night on top of the room rate and the Rancho Palos Verdes hotel tax; the one- to four-bedroom bungalows, casitas and villas carry a $90 resort fee. Read it →

$$$From about $725 a night

Sunset Tower Hotel: The Art Deco tower above the pool terrace
The classicSunset Strip
1 / 10

Sunset Tower Hotel

A 1931 Art Deco tower on the Sunset Strip, with the Tower Bar downstairs and the city spread below the south-facing windows.

Why go. The Tower Bar and Restaurant, in what the hotel calls Bugsy Siegel's old apartment, with 80 seats, walnut panelling, a fireplace and live jazz in the evening.

The catch. The room rate is not the whole price. A nightly amenity fee of $52.43, tax included, is added to every stay, parking is by valet at $75 a night, and 16.695% hotel tax applies to the room. Read it →

$$$From about $595 a night

Santa Monica Proper Hotel: Pewter-glazed columns in the Palma lobby lounge
The design oneSanta Monica
1 / 10

Santa Monica Proper Hotel

Kelly Wearstler interiors across a 1928 city landmark and a new building, with a rooftop pool in downtown Santa Monica.

Why go. Pewter-glazed ceramic columns that recall dark oyster shells, in the Wearstler lobby.

The catch. A $55 nightly destination fee plus tax is added to every stay, and valet parking is $90.27 per vehicle with tax, so the room rate is not the nightly cost, least of all for a guest with a car. Read it →

$$$From about $585 a night

The Hollywood Roosevelt: The Tropicana pool and tower at dusk
The pool oneHollywood
1 / 10

The Hollywood Roosevelt

The 1927 tower on Hollywood Boulevard where the first Academy Awards were presented and David Hockney painted the pool.

Why go. The Tropicana pool, heated year-round, with David Hockney's painting on its floor.

The catch. Noise is part of the deal. The hotel runs restaurants, bars, private events and pool programming, music and pool activity can be audible in the cabana rooms around the pool, the Tropicana is shared with day-pass guests aged 21 and over, loungers are first come, first served, and the pool can close for private events or film shoots. $From about $235 a night

The Garland: The outdoor pool and its fireplace
The family oneStudio City
1 / 10

The Garland

Seven tree-shaded acres in Studio City, with a pool, bunk-bed family suites and a free trolley to Universal Studios.

Why go. A free trolley to Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk, on the hour from 8am to 10pm except at 1pm and 3pm.

The catch. The 101 freeway runs along the north-east edge of the grounds, and some rooms hear it. The hotel had its balcony doors replaced in 2013 to cut the noise, so keep the door shut at night and ask for a room away from the freeway side. Read it →

$$From about $275 a night

Silver Lake Pool & Inn: The pool deck and its cactus niche
The insider oneSilver Lake
1 / 10

Silver Lake Pool & Inn

A 54-room Silver Lake hotel with a pool deck and a trattoria, four minutes' walk from Sunset Junction.

Why go. Sunset Junction's cafés, bars and independent shops, four minutes' walk away.

The catch. Noise is the recurring complaint: thin walls let through footsteps from the floor above and the corridor, and street-side rooms hear Santa Monica Boulevard traffic into the night, so ask for a quiet room away from the boulevard. Read it →

$$From about $425 a night

Hotel Figueroa: Candelabra euphorbias and towers beyond the pool
The smart moneyDowntown LA
1 / 10

Hotel Figueroa

A 1926 YWCA hotel restored in Spanish Colonial style, with a heated courtyard pool and L.A. Live two minutes away.

Why go. A coffin-shaped pool at ground level, heated to 82°F (28°C), among tall candelabra euphorbias with downtown towers rising beyond the hedges.

The catch. The entry rooms are small: the 1 Queen Bed room is about 187 sq ft (17 m²) and the 1 King Bed about 270 sq ft (25 m²), so book the king or a suite if you want space to sit. Read it →

Best hotels in LA, by what you want

Deciding between two LA hotels?

Questions people ask

Good questions about Los Angeles

Which is the best hotel in Los Angeles?

None of the ten is "the best". Each is the best for a different reason, and that reason is the tag on its card. Answer three questions in Better Fit and it will pick the one for you.

Which hotel in Los Angeles is best for beach and pool?

Shutters on the Beach. A beach-house hotel on the sand in Santa Monica, with an ocean-view pool and the pier nine minutes' walk north.

What is the best hotel in Los Angeles for families?

The Garland. Seven tree-shaded acres in Studio City, with a pool, bunk-bed family suites and a free trolley to Universal Studios.

Which is the best value hotel in Los Angeles?

The Hollywood Roosevelt. The 1927 tower on Hollywood Boulevard where the first Academy Awards were presented and David Hockney painted the pool.

Where should I stay in Los Angeles?

Choose the base first, because in Los Angeles it decides how much of each day is spent in a car. On the coast, Shutters on the Beach is on the sand in Santa Monica, nine minutes' walk from the pier, and Santa Monica Proper is a few blocks inland in the walkable downtown; Venice Beach is 47 minutes' walk down the shore from the pier. Malibu Beach Inn is on Carbon Beach, by Malibu Pier. Inland, The Beverly Hills Hotel stands on Sunset Boulevard, and Sunset Tower is on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The Hollywood Roosevelt faces the TCL Chinese Theatre across Hollywood Boulevard. On the Eastside, Silver Lake Pool & Inn is four minutes' walk from Sunset Junction, and Hotel Figueroa is Downtown in South Park, by Crypto.com Arena. In Studio City, The Garland runs a free trolley to Universal Studios Hollywood, and Terranea is a clifftop resort on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, an hour's drive from Malibu.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.

Where to base yourself in LA

At LAX, the main airport, app cars and most taxis pick up at LAX-it, a lot east of Terminal 1, reached on foot or by free shuttle from arrivals. Routed from there with the roads clear, Shutters and Santa Monica Proper are 19 minutes by car, The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Figueroa 26, Sunset Tower 27, the Roosevelt 30, Silver Lake Pool & Inn 32, The Garland 34, Terranea 35 and Malibu Beach Inn 38. In the evening rush, the airport's own guide shows the roads into it taking up to nearly four times as long as overnight. Hollywood Burbank Airport is closer to the Valley, Hollywood and the Eastside, and opens a new terminal on 13 October 2026: from the terminal, The Garland is 12 minutes by car, the Roosevelt 17 and Silver Lake Pool & Inn 19.

Most trips are by car or app car, but Metro rail covers part of the map: $1.75 a ride with free transfers for two hours, capped at $5 a day and $18 over seven days, paid by tapping a contactless card or phone. The B Line stops four minutes' walk from the Roosevelt at Hollywood/Highland, 13 from Silver Lake Pool & Inn and 17 from The Garland; the E Line ends at Downtown Santa Monica, 14 minutes from Shutters and from Santa Monica Proper; Hotel Figueroa is nine minutes from 7th Street/Metro Center. From LAX, a free shuttle reaches the K and C Lines. On foot, keep to a base: the Walk of Fame takes 29 minutes end to end along Hollywood Boulevard. No train reaches Malibu or Palos Verdes, so there you need a car.

Rates are quoted before tax, and each city sets its own. The City of Los Angeles charges 14%, plus a 2% tourism district assessment at hotels of 50 rooms or more, and all four of the ten in the city are that size. Beverly Hills charges 14%, Malibu 15%, Santa Monica 15% plus $7.25 a room a night, and West Hollywood 12.5% plus a 4% district assessment. Rancho Palos Verdes charges 10%; Measure RS, on the ballot on 3 November 2026, would make it 13%. Then the hotels' own nightly fees: $75 at Terranea, $60 plus tax at Shutters, $55 plus tax at Santa Monica Proper, $52.43 with tax at Sunset Tower, $37 with tax at the Roosevelt, $35 plus tax at Hotel Figueroa and $38.95 at The Garland, $37.20 of it a fee the hotel ties to the city's hotel worker wage law; allow for a $30 resort fee plus tax at Silver Lake Pool & Inn. Overnight parking runs from $35 plus tax to about $90.

The honest part. Los Angeles is big: Malibu Beach Inn to Terranea is 66 km (41 miles), and every time here is for clear roads. The extras add up, to $150 a night at Terranea with the resort fee and valet. The Pacific is cooler than the sunshine suggests: NOAA's averages for the water at Santa Monica Pier run from 14.7°C (58.4°F) in January to 20.2°C (68.4°F) in August. Late-spring mornings on the coast are often grey, what the National Weather Service calls May Gray and June gloom. Downtown averages 20°C (68°F) by day in January and 28.9°C (84°F) in August, and most of its 362 mm (14.25 inches) of rain falls from December to March.
