Which room to book at Hazlitt's

The Superior Double. At an average of 23 square metres it is the first category where the Georgian proportions stop feeling tight, it is sold with king or large king beds and some four-posters, and for 9 to 11 February 2027 it was 72 pounds a night more than the Club Double and 145 less than the Luxury Double, which is only a square metre bigger.

Why this one

The ladder is short and the steps are uneven. The Club Double is 19 square metres on average and the hotel's own description says it is best suited to short stays, which is a polite way of saying it is small. The Superior Double adds four square metres, moves the beds up to king or large king with some four-posters, and gives you a roll-top or theatre bath and in some rooms a walk-in shower. For 9 to 11 February 2027 the prepaid rates were 332.10 pounds a night for the Club Double and 404.10 for the Superior: 72 pounds for the difference between a room you sleep in and a room you can spend a wet afternoon in. The hotel's own upgrade note on the Club Double points you the same way.

Above the Superior the maths stops working. The Luxury Double is one square metre bigger, lists the same beds and baths, and was 549 pounds prepaid, with no prepaid saving at all. The Deluxe Double, at 33 square metres, was 503.10, so it is the better buy of the two and the room to take if space matters more than 100 pounds a night, though the hotel sells it as a room for longer stays. The two Junior Suites at 629.10 and the Duke of Monmouth at 827.10 are for occasions. For everyone else the Superior is where the character per pound peaks.

Ask for
Ask for one of the four-poster Superior Doubles, because the hotel sells the category with a mix of beds and says so on its own website, and ask for a room at the back of the house rather than on Frith Street if you are a light sleeper. Say if you want a bath rather than a walk-in shower; both exist in the category. Book the prepaid rate if your dates are fixed, since it was ten percent cheaper in both February and April, and the flexible rate only buys you the right to cancel until noon two days before arrival, which is the hotel's standard policy anyway.
Avoid
Skip the Luxury Double unless a specific room in it has been recommended to you by name: in both February and April it cost more than the larger Deluxe and offered no saving for paying in advance. Skip the Club Double for a long stay: the hotel itself calls it best suited to short stays and points you up to the Superior. And do not book a Club Single expecting a compact double; it is sold for one adult with a single bed, and it only appears when you search for one guest.

Suites against rooms

The two Junior Suites, at an average of 43 square metres, are the only rooms in the house with a separate sitting area, and the sofa bed in it is described by the hotel as taking two small children. The rates tell a stricter story: in February the category was capped at two adults and one child, with nothing offered for a party with two children, so ask the hotel before counting on the sofa bed. At 629.10 pounds prepaid in February they were 126 pounds above the Deluxe Double, which is the price of the sitting area and the sofa bed.

The Duke of Monmouth is a different proposition: 66 square metres over two levels, a sitting room with a working fireplace, a marble bath in the bedroom with a separate shower room, and a 24 square metre terrace with a sliding glass roof that can be reached without going through the bedroom. At 827.10 pounds prepaid it is the one room in the building with air of its own, and there is exactly one of it.

Our verdict

Hazlitt's suits people who want the 18th century left roughly as it was found, stairs and all. Take a Superior Double, plan every dinner outside the front door, and let Soho do the rest.
