Madeira airport pick-up points
Madeira Airport has one terminal, and you come out of baggage reclaim on the ground floor, Floor 0, where every way off the airport starts. ANA, the operator, keeps its pick-up advice short, so this page sets out what it and the transport operators do state: where the taxis wait, where the Aerobus leaves, where a friend should park and how to call for assistance, with what each costs.
The 30-second version
Come out of baggage reclaim into Arrivals on the ground floor (Floor 0). The taxi rank is at Arrivals, and the yellow cabs run on the meter, from €4.00 by day. The Aerobus leaves from the '01 - Aeroporto' stop outside arrivals between 08:30 and 22:00, €6.70 on board. A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals at the point you agreed, and a friend collecting you should use ANA's car parks, the only ones inside the airport, each with a footpath to the terminal.

- Taxi
Arrivals, Ground Floor (Floor 0), at the taxi rank
Walk out of the arrivals hall to the rank. Madeira's taxis are yellow with a blue stripe and run on the meter; there are no fixed airport fares. ANA states that trips from the airport start at €4.00 on weekdays, 20% more from 21:00 to 06:00 and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, plus €1.50 for luggage in the boot or a pet. Under the regional taxi convention, updated in 2026, the daytime meter then adds €0.10 every 69 metres, about €1.45 a km, so central Funchal comes to about €30, the Lido to about €35 and Ponta do Sol to about €60 by day, before luggage and slow traffic. The island's taxi association, AITRAM, is on +351 291 765 760.
- Bus
Outside arrivals, at the '01 - Aeroporto' stop
ANA says the Aerobus departs from the Arrivals area. Run by CAM, it leaves between 08:30 and 22:00, every half hour in the morning and hourly after midday on weekdays, with 15 runs on Sundays and holidays and none on 25 December. It follows the coast to Avenida do Mar in 24 minutes, Avenida do Infante in 32, the Lido in 38 and Praia Formosa in 50. A single costs €6.70 on board, or €5.55 loaded on a GIRO card, which costs €0.50; the Regional Tourist ticket, €13.75 a day, covers it too.
- Pre-booked driver
Arrivals hall, Floor 0
A driver booked ahead tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. ANA does not publish a signed meeting point here, so agree the exact spot when you book and keep the driver's number to hand. It is the easy option for a landing after the last Aerobus at 22:00, and for the long runs to Santana, 33 minutes, and Ponta do Sol, 37.
- Car hire
Hire firms' offices at the airport
Avis, Sixt, Rodavante and Europcar are among the firms with offices at the airport. Follow your firm's instructions for collecting the car. The VR1 expressway runs from the airport along the south coast to Funchal, about 20 minutes away.
- Friends collecting you
ANA's car parks, inside the airport, each with pedestrian access to the terminal
ANA says its car parks are the only ones actually inside Madeira Airport, and all of them have a footpath to the passenger terminal. A friend collecting you parks there and walks across to arrivals; ANA also asks drivers dropping off or picking up to respect the designated parking areas. Spaces can be booked online through ANA, which publishes its rates in force on its parking page.
Being picked up by a friend
Park in one of ANA's car parks and walk to arrivals. They are the only car parks inside the airport, every one has pedestrian access to the terminal, and ANA asks anyone picking up or dropping off to use the designated parking areas rather than wait at the kerb. ANA publishes its rates in force on its parking page and sells spaces online.
While you wait, follow the flight on ANA's app, which shows arrival times in real time, and the restaurants and shops in the public area are open to you. Your passenger comes out into the arrivals hall on the ground floor, Floor 0, so meet there.
Taxi fares from the rank
There is no fixed fare; every trip runs on the meter. By day on weekdays the first kilometre costs €4.00, then €0.10 every 69 metres, about €1.45 a km. From 21:00 to 06:00, and all day at weekends and on holidays, it is €4.80 and €0.10 every 58 metres, about €1.72 a km. Luggage that goes in the boot, or a pet, adds €1.50, and in slow traffic the daytime meter adds €0.10 every 30 seconds.
On distance alone, that is about €20 to Caniço de Baixo, €25 to São Gonçalo, €30 to central Funchal, €35 to the Lido and to Santana, and €60 to Ponta do Sol, all by day. At night or at the weekend, add roughly a fifth.

- Nights, weekends and holidays
- €4.80 for the first km, then about €1.72 a km

- The Lido by day

Landing late at night
The last Aerobus leaves the airport at 22:00 and the first at 08:30, so outside those hours it is the taxi rank or a driver booked ahead. After 21:00 the taxi meter runs at the night rate, roughly a fifth above the daytime fare, which on distance alone makes central Funchal about €35 and the Lido about €45. A pre-booked driver follows your flight, so a late landing costs nothing extra, and waits in arrivals.
Accessible pick-up and assistance
ANA's assistance service is called MyWay. Book it through your airline or travel agent when you book, or at least 48 hours before the published departure time. Arriving by air, the airline tells MyWay and staff help you from your seat on the aircraft through the airport. Starting your trip at the airport, look for the Designated Point of Arrival, a telephone booth marked with the MyWay logo, and call to say you are there; signs direct you to MyWay's contact points on Levels 0 and 1.
A carer or companion who is needed can stay with you throughout, and guide dogs are allowed in the terminal, including the boarding area. Assistance at EU airports is free.
