Colosseum: guided tour or the official ticket?

The official ticket covers the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine for 16 euros plus a 2-euro booking fee. The guided tour we would book, from Crown Tours, costs 59 euros with that same ticket inside it, so the real question is whether a guide is worth about 41 euros.

For the Colosseum alone, often not: it explains itself. For the Forum and the Palatine, usually yes, because without someone to read them they are a field of broken stone.

Which one for you

Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine with a guide

Book the guided tour for a first visit, if the official slots for your date have gone, or if you want the Forum and the Palatine to mean something. It is also the easier choice with children, who get a story rather than a field of stones.

The official ticket

Buy the official ticket if you have been before, if you have read up and want to set your own pace, if your children are under 18 and the budget is tight, or if you want to spend half a day on the Palatine rather than an hour.

The verdict

First visit: the guided tour, for the Forum more than the Colosseum. Second visit, or a reader who has done the homework: the official ticket, bought the day it goes on sale.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Colosseum: guided tour or the official ticket?

Is it worth paying for a guided tour of the Colosseum?

For a first visit, yes. The Colosseum is easy to understand on your own; the Roman Forum and the Palatine, on the same ticket, are not. The tour we would book costs about 41 euros more than the 18-euro official ticket for a licensed guide across all three.

Can I just buy a Colosseum ticket at the door?

Do not count on it. Tickets are timed and named, go on sale 30 days ahead on the official site, and popular times sell out in spring and autumn.

Does the official ticket include the Forum and the Palatine?

Yes. The 24-hour ticket covers the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine for 16 euros plus a 2-euro booking fee.

Is the Colosseum free for children?

Under-18s enter free on the official price, and everyone enters free on the first Sunday of the month. A guided tour still charges for the guide.
