Vatican: early entry or the standard tour?

Both get you past the ticket queue with a licensed guide, through the Vatican Museums and into the Sistine Chapel. The difference is the hour. The early-entry tour we would book, from What a Life Tours, goes in before the public opening at 8am, with about ten to a guide. The standard tour, from Enjoy Rome and with about 86,000 reviews, goes in during normal hours, when the Gallery of Maps moves at the pace of the person in front of you.

The early tour costs 109 euros, the standard one 49. The official skip-the-line ticket, without a guide, is 25.

Which one for you

Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel before the crowds

Book early entry if the Sistine Chapel is the reason you came to Rome, if crowds spoil a place for you, or if you want St Peter's in the same morning without queueing twice.

The standard skip-the-line tour

Book the standard tour if the budget matters more than the hour, if you need a guide in Italian, French, German or Spanish, or if you cannot face a meeting time before 8am.

The verdict

If you only see the Vatican once, the extra 60 euros buys the one thing money cannot otherwise buy there: space. On a budget, the standard tour does the job, and the official 25-euro ticket does it without a guide.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Vatican: early entry or the standard tour?

Is Vatican early entry worth it?

If the Sistine Chapel matters to you, yes. Early-entry groups go in before the 8am public opening, in small groups, and the rooms are as empty as they get. The standard tour goes in during normal hours, when the museums are at their busiest.

How much is the standard Vatican tour?

From 49 euros on GetYourGuide, for a licensed guide, priority entry, the museums and the Sistine Chapel; St Peter's Basilica is included only with the option that includes it.

Is St Peter's Basilica included in Vatican tours?

In the early-entry tour, yes, through the guides' passage from the Sistine Chapel. In the standard tour, only with that option, and not on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when the basilica is closed until noon.

What is the cheapest way into the Vatican Museums?

The official ticket: 20 euros at the door, 25 with the online skip-the-line booking, and free on the last Sunday of the month from 9am to 2pm, with long queues.
