Which room to book at Santiago de Alfama

The Classic River Bedroom. It is the cheapest category the hotel sells with a view, and in Alfama the rooftops running down to the Tejo are the reason to sleep here rather than in the Baixa. For 9 to 11 February 2027 it was 385 euros a night room only, 100 more than the Classic Alfama, which is not sold with a view, and 45 less than a Superior King that promises none.

Why this one

Six categories, and what separates them is less the floor area, which the hotel does not publish, than the window. The Classic Alfama is sold as a standard double with no view and described as small; the Classic River is the same standard double with the view added. The Superior King and the Deluxe King spend the extra on the bathroom and the bed, and in the Deluxe on a deep bath and a seating area, with no view promised for either. Only three categories are sold on the river: the Classic River, the Junior Suite with River View and the Santiago Suite.

That makes the ladder lopsided. For 9 to 11 February 2027, room only, it ran 285, 385, 430, 460, 585 and 800 euros a night. The first step, 100 euros, buys the view; the next two buy comfort without it; the jump to the Junior Suite at 585 buys the view back with space around it. If a bath and an armchair matter more to you than the Tejo, the Deluxe King is the sensible middle. If the view is the point, stop at the Classic River or go straight to the suites.

Ask for
Book the Classic River early: it can sell out while every other category is still on sale. On a Classic Alfama, look at the flexible room-only rate before paying up front: on the February dates it was 10 euros a night cheaper than the non-refundable one. Ask for a higher floor and a room away from the tram stop, and if anyone in your party uses a wheelchair, ask for Room 101, the Deluxe King the hotel designed for wheelchair users.
Avoid
The Classic Alfama if the view is why you came: the hotel sells it as a standard double without one and calls the category small, though two of them connect to the Deluxe King next door, which makes the pair a family option. And do not pay up to the Superior or Deluxe King expecting the river; neither is promised a view, so the extra goes on the bathroom and the bed.

Suites against rooms

The Junior Suite with River View, 585 euros on the February dates, is the one to book for the view with room to sit: vaulted stucco ceilings, an extra-long king bed, a seating area, a rain shower, a separate WC and double sinks. The Santiago Suite with Panoramic View, at 800, is the room the hotel says has the best view in Lisbon over Alfama and the Tejo, and it puts a freestanding bath in the bedroom to face it; it is also the only category the hotel lists with an espresso machine. No room, suites included, has a balcony.

Our verdict

The most atmospheric address in Lisbon, with the practical trade-offs that come with it. Go for two or three nights, not a week.
