Santiago de Alfama

Santiago de Alfama is the hotel for people who want to open the shutters onto the oldest part of Lisbon rather than look at it from a viewpoint. It is a 15th-century palace on Rua de Santiago, a few steps from the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and the castle walls, restored in 2015 into 19 rooms with Audrey's restaurant and a small cafe on the street. The architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade worked on it with the owner, Heleen Uitenbroek, for the best part of six years. The house predates the 1755 earthquake and had been adapted by its residents for centuries before that, which is why it still runs as a labyrinth with almost no right angles.

The building does most of the talking: thick walls, tiles, stone stairs and rooms that look over rooftops to the river. Gothic arches, Manueline colonnades and Roman traces were conserved where they were found rather than tidied away. Six categories run from the Classic Alfama Bedroom and Classic River Bedroom through the Superior King Bedroom and Deluxe King Bedroom to the Junior Suite with River View and the Santiago Suite with Panoramic View, and what separates them is mostly which way you face and how much floor you get. Downstairs there is Audrey's, a tea room, a terrace laid for lunch and The Beauty Bar.

The recurring theme in feedback is atmosphere first, staff second, and both score well. Audrey's Café, Bistro & Bar carries four menus through the day, from breakfast and brunch to afternoon tea, cocktails and dinner, so it works as a restaurant in its own right rather than a hotel afterthought. The Beauty Bar handles massages, facials and nails between 9am and 6pm, but it is a single treatment space and not a spa. There is no pool and no gym, and on a footprint like this there was never going to be.

The trade-off is the neighbourhood itself. Parking is banned in the old quarter, so unless you take the hotel's paid transfer to the door, luggage comes up the cobbled lanes on foot. The streets are steep, tram 28 clatters past nearby, the rooms are small, and the area fills with tour groups by late morning and empties by night. Book it for a romantic couple of nights, a first visit where the medieval city is the point, or the pleasure of walking back through empty alleys after dinner.
