What we looked for

In Lisbon the famous names charge for the address. In low season, rooms at the Bairro Alto Hotel and The Ivens typically start at 500 euros or more; the four hotels here typically start at 235 to 285, and between them they offer a palace facing a viewpoint, a fifteenth-century palace in Alfama, a five-star with a terrace pool and an independent house on a garden square. The trade is usually distance, facilities or room size, and each hotel below says which.

When you go matters as much as where. January to March is the floor, October sells out, and Easter, Web Summit and New Year's Eve can push rates up. Lisbon's city tax, 4 euros a person a night from the age of 13, comes on top of every rate, and prices have climbed hard since 2019, so read any from price as a low-season entry rate.

Nineteen rooms and suites in two eighteenth-century townhouses on a garden square, fitted out by the two founders themselves, furniture and light fittings included, with no group behind it. The bathrooms are all Portuguese marble, each with a walk-in rain shower, and the Deluxe rooms have a complimentary minibar.

It is further from the old town than the Chiado hotels, but Rato metro is six minutes' walk, the 24E tram stops on the square and a two-star dinner at Henrique Sá Pessoa is two minutes from the door. The smart money goes on the top floor: the two attic suites under the mansard roof are the cheapest rooms in the house per square metre, and only the suites come with an airport pick-up, on stays of two nights or more.

Memmo Príncipe Real opened in 2016 as the neighbourhood's first five-star, and it typically starts at about half the low-season price of the two Chiado hotels. For that you get a small heated pool on the terrace, open to residents around the clock, and Café Príncipe Real beside it, which locals book too, with the castle and the roofs of the Baixa in front of you. Guests also praise a front desk full of local tips.

The view costs very little: the Superior City View is only a small step up from the entry room, which is sold without one. And the address does the rest. Chiado and the Bairro Alto are downhill, eight minutes on foot to the Trindade beer hall, and Tapisco and A Cevicheria are two minutes from the door.

A fifteenth-century palace a few steps from the Santa Luzia viewpoint, with nineteen rooms and a Michelin Key, at about half what Palácio Príncipe Real typically starts at in low season. Its restorers left the Gothic arches, Manueline colonnades and even Roman traces where they stood, and that history, in the city's oldest quarter, is what the money buys.

Eating well needs no taxi. Audrey's, downstairs, runs four menus from 7.30am to 11pm, with bistro mains at 18 to 25 euros, and Chapitô à Mesa's terrace under the castle walls is four minutes away. Timing is where the value is made: January to March is the hotel's cheapest stretch, and October sells out early.

The lowest typical starting price of our ten buys a 1740s palace built for the architect of the Mafra palace, straight across the street from the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, with a Michelin Key, a Caudalie spa with two treatment rooms, a small gym and a restaurant in the glass-roofed courtyard. The address is central too: the Bairro Alto begins right behind it, Príncipe Real is up the street and Chiado downhill, and tram 24E stops outside.

The wine is good value as well. At Federico, three courses with three wines cost 50 or 55 euros a head, and the Solar do Vinho do Porto in the same building pours around 150 Port and Douro labels on weekdays. With 61 rooms that vary widely, the category you book matters.

When is the cheapest time to stay in Lisbon?

January to March, when rates at our hotels sit at their lowest. October is the month that sells out, and small hotels have little slack: Santiago de Alfama has 19 rooms, and Hotel das Amoreiras 17 rooms and two suites, so book early for autumn. Easter and New Year's Eve lift rates again, and the Festas de Lisboa, peaking on the night of 12 to 13 June, fill the old quarters with street parties, so book those dates early. Web Summit, 9 to 12 November in 2026, moves hotel rates less than its reputation suggests.

How much does a good hotel room in Lisbon cost?

At the four hotels on this page, typical low-season starting prices run from 235 euros a night at Palácio Ludovice to 285 at Santiago de Alfama, with Hotel das Amoreiras and Memmo Príncipe Real at 250. The two Chiado hotels on our list typically start at 500 or more. Those are entry rooms in the quiet months, and summer costs more. Check whether your rate includes breakfast, and add Lisbon's city tax on top.

How much is the tourist tax in Lisbon?

4 euros per guest per night from the age of 13, for at most seven nights of a stay. It doubled from 2 euros on 1 September 2024 and has not changed since. The hotel collects it at check-in or check-out as a separate line on the bill, always on top of the room rate. Under-13s are exempt. Two adults staying five nights pay 40 euros between them, and for a week or longer the tax stops at 56.

Are cheaper Lisbon hotels far from the sights?

Not these. Palácio Ludovice faces the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, with the Bairro Alto right behind it and Chiado downhill. From Memmo Príncipe Real, Chiado and the Bairro Alto are downhill too, eight minutes on foot to the Trindade beer hall. Santiago de Alfama is a few steps from the Santa Luzia viewpoint, and the castle is 5 minutes from Largo das Portas do Sol. Hotel das Amoreiras is the one further out: Chiado is a 27-minute walk, and Rato metro is six minutes from the door.
