Which room to book at Claridge's

The Mayfair Balcony Room. At 45 square metres it is only five more than the Mayfair Room below it, but it is the first category the hotel sells with a balcony and the first it sells without the courtyard as a possible outlook. Everything below it faces the courtyard; several categories above it still can.

Why this one

The bottom of the ladder is about which way you look, not how much room you get. The Superior at 35 square metres and the Mayfair Room at 40 are sold on the courtyard and nothing else, and guests report the courtyard as the side that catches noise. The Mayfair Balcony Room is the next step, 45 square metres, and it is the first category whose stated outlooks are all streets, Brook Street, Davies Street or Brook's Mews, with a balcony to stand on. Ten square metres over the entry room is a modest gain; getting off the courtyard is the whole point of the step.

Above it the ladder is less tidy than the names suggest. The 50 square metre Claridge's Room puts the courtyard back among its four outlooks, the 60 square metre Studio lists the internal courtyard too, and the 65 square metre Deluxe Junior Suite, the first suite, faces the courtyard only. Above that the courtyard vanishes: from the 65 square metre Terrace Junior Suite upward, terrace or not, every stated outlook is a street, the mews or the skyline. The courtyard is concentrated at the bottom of the ladder and in one suite, which is what makes it avoidable. If you want more room than 45 square metres and the same certainty, the 55 square metre Claridge's Balcony Room is the other safe rung; from 75 square metres the terrace and full suites add the 24-hour butler and a bottle of Billecart-Salmon, pressing on arrival starts at the 105 square metre Corner Suite, and the question becomes floor area and the designer, not the view.

Ask for
Ask which of the three streets your balcony faces. Brook Street is the front of the hotel, Davies Street the side, and Brook's Mews the narrow lane at the back. Ask whether the room is finished in the traditional style with gilded cornices or in the art deco style, because both run through the Mayfair Balcony category and you cannot choose one when you book. Ask for a high floor; the hotel publishes no floor numbers, so it is a request rather than a booking.
Avoid
The Superior and the Mayfair Room if the outlook matters at all, since both are courtyard only. Treat the Claridge's Room and the Deluxe Junior Suite as upgrades to be checked rather than accepted, because the courtyard is a stated outlook for both, and a Deluxe Junior Suite faces nothing else. The Superior is also the only category with no twin option, which matters if you are two friends rather than a couple.

Suites against rooms

Two are worth singling out. The Terrace Junior Suite is the same 65 square metres as the Deluxe Junior Suite but faces Brook's Mews and the rooftops with a terrace, and it is the cheapest way into outdoor space that is not a balcony. Among the signature suites, The Grand Terrace at 190 square metres is the one framed by terraces on the roof extension with a stated view of Parliament and the London Eye, and it is the two-bedroom suite to take if the outdoors is the point.

One rule worth knowing: The Octagon, at 225 square metres, is the threshold category for the Flexjet helicopter transfer from Luton, Stansted, Farnborough or Biggin Hill, on 72 hours' notice.

Our verdict

Claridge's is the London grand hotel that fixed its one real gap, and the spa is now as good a reason to book as the Foyer. Go for the building and the service, and plan your dinners elsewhere.
