What we looked for

All three of these spas are underground. Claridge's dug its spa three floors below the lobby, The Ned's sits in the basement of Lutyens's bank, and Sea Containers London's agua spa is on level -2. So the thing to compare is not the view but what is down there: a pool or not, a sauna or a steam room, and whether access comes with the room.

A spa is also the London plan that ignores the weather. October and November are the wettest months, and December gets about 53 hours of sun in total, which is when an afternoon between the steam room and the pool earns its place. Choose Claridge's for a full spa that comes with every room, The Ned for a 20 metre pool and a serious gym, and Sea Containers London for a treatment and a steam with the river outside.

Claridge's Spa opened in September 2022, the first the hotel has ever had: 7,000 square feet designed by André Fu, three floors below the lobby, with seven treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms, a Technogym fitness studio and a relaxation pool. Access to the spa, pool and sauna comes with every room category, so the morning swim and the evening sauna are part of the stay; treatments are on top, with 60-minute treatments from 250 pounds. It is open daily from 8am to 9pm.

The hotel calls the pool an intimate relaxation pool, so think of it as part of a spa afternoon rather than a place for lengths. Family swimming runs from 8am to 10am, and the pool is adults only for the rest of the day. Guests single out the spa, the sauna and the steam rooms.

Ned's Club Spa, in the basement of Lutyens's bank, has a 20 metre pool at its centre, with a sauna, a steam room and treatment rooms. It is for over-18s and open from 8am to 8pm every day. The gym is 620 square metres with three studios and more than forty classes a week, and opens at 6am on weekdays. Guests single out the pool and the spa changing rooms.

Whether Ned's Club Spa and Gym comes with your room depends on the rate, so check what yours includes; otherwise a Spa Day Pass is 200 pounds, redeemable against a treatment. The heated rooftop pool is for Ned's Club members, so the basement pool is the one to plan your swims around.

Sea Containers London's agua spa is on level -2: treatment rooms, a lounge with loungers, same-sex steam rooms, and agua Studio, where the hotel runs yoga and Thai massage. Steam room use is included in every stay and the gym is open to residents around the clock; non-residents pay 85 pounds on a weekday for two hours of the same steam rooms and gym.

Book it for a treatment and a steam rather than a swim, because the building has no pool, sauna or jacuzzi. The treatment day ends at 7.30pm on weekdays, so book your slot before you arrive. Then the evening stays in the building: a drink at Lyaness and dinner at Gordon Ramsay at Sea Containers, whose River Terrace sits on the water.
