Which room to book at Columbus Hotel Monte-Carlo

The Riviera Deluxe Room. It is 25 square metres, queen-bedded and no bigger than the top of the Superior range, but on the hotel's own ladder it is the lowest category sold with the Mediterranean seen directly from its own terrace. Below it the Riviera Room sees the pool and the sea, and the Superior and Deluxe face the rose garden or a residential street; everything above it is a suite.

Why this one

The four room categories are close in size and far apart in what they look at. The Superior, 21 to 31 square metres on the hotel's fact sheet, faces either the rose garden or the residential street behind the hotel, and the hotel does not promise which. The Deluxe, 23 to 31, has a terrace over the garden with a slice of sea. The Riviera Room, 23, sees the pool and the sea. The Riviera Deluxe is 25 square metres, queen-bedded, and its own page says direct sea views from the terrace, the only room below suite level where the hotel uses the word direct. The guests who had one recommend it. Rates move with the dates, so check what the step from Deluxe to Riviera Deluxe costs on yours.

Above the Riviera Deluxe the ladder becomes suites, and the shape is unusual. The 32 square metre Lifestyle Suite is a big room with a sofa; the real jump is to 45 square metres, where three categories compete: two accessible king rooms, the Riviera Suite with the Rock in the view, and the Top Floor Suite on the highest floor with a bath and a separate shower. Above those, the 55 square metre Rose Garden Suite turns back to the garden side, so more money buys more space and less sea. If the water is the point, the ladder tops out at the Riviera Suite; if space is the point, keep climbing.

Ask for
Ask for a Riviera Deluxe on a high floor with a furnished terrace, and say when you book that the sea is the reason for the stay. If you are given a Superior, ask whether it faces the rose garden or the residential area; the hotel's own page admits both exist, and only one is worth having. Terraces are on two thirds of the rooms, so ask early rather than at check-in.
Avoid
Do not book a Superior for the view, because it may not have one, and do not book any garden-side room for the sea, because the Deluxe's partial sea view is exactly that. Anyone who needs a king bed should note that the Riviera Room, Riviera Deluxe and Lifestyle Suite are queen only on the hotel's own pages; on the sea side the king starts at the accessible rooms and the Riviera Suite, while the garden-side Superior and Deluxe offer king beds. And the Serviced Residences on the hotel site are long-term lets, not hotel rooms.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are worth singling out. The Riviera Suite, 45 square metres with a king bed and a terrace, is the only category whose page names the Rock of Monaco in the view as well as the sea, and seven exist. The Rose Garden Suite, 55 square metres on the top floor with a door between the bedroom and the living room, sleeps four and has a terrace with lounge beds, and for a family it does the job of the 90 square metre Family Suite at a category and a half less; the trade is a garden view with partial sea rather than the water.
