Which room to book at Bairro Alto Hotel

The Prestige Chiado. It is the room the hotel sells on quiet, looking onto Rua das Flores rather than the square, and at 33 to 38 square metres it is about half as big again as the Classic Chiado. For 9 to 11 February 2027 it was 725 euros a night against 525 for a Classic Chiado, and cheaper per square metre.

Why this one

The problem at this address is the square, and the Prestige Chiado is the room that avoids it. The hotel sells it on its quiet view of Rua das Flores, with a clawfoot bath and a walk-in shower in 33 to 38 square metres. For 9 to 11 February 2027 it was 725 euros a night on the flexible rate with breakfast, against 525 for the Classic Chiado, which is 23 to 25 square metres looking over Chiado and Bairro Alto. That works out at roughly 19 to 22 euros a square metre against 21 to 23: the bigger, quieter room is also the better value. For 20 to 22 April the gap widened to 365 to 370 euros a night, and it is still the room we would pay for.

The ladder is shaped by outlook more than by size. The four Classic rooms run from 525 to 645 euros and from 22 to 29 square metres, and they were the same price in February and April; every category from the Prestige Chiado up cost more in April. The names are a guide to direction, not to the view: nothing called Tejo is sold with the river, which arrives only with the two Signature Suites on the top floor, at 2,300 and 2,800 euros. In between, the Junior and Deluxe Junior suites are effectively the same size at 945 and 1,045 euros, and the difference is a quiet upper floor in the new wing.

Ask for
Ask for a Prestige Chiado on the highest floor available, and check that your rate includes breakfast: the hotel publishes no price for it bought separately.
Avoid
The Classic Chiado and its Twin if you expect room to spread out at 525 euros a night; the Single, the Chiado Suite and the Junior Suite if you sleep lightly, since the hotel sells all three on the square or the neighbourhood's hubbub; and the Classic Tejo or Prestige Tejo if the river is the point, because neither is sold with it.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are worth singling out. The Deluxe Junior Suite, 44 to 52 square metres on an upper floor of the new wing, was 1,045 euros on the February dates against 945 for the Junior Suite, which is about the same size but has windows the hotel itself says catch the neighbourhood's hubbub. A hundred euros a night for quiet is the right trade at this address.

The other is the Bairro Alto Signature Suite, 69 square metres on the top floor, facing west over the Tagus and the bridge from a small covered balcony. At 2,800 euros it is the only room sold with both the river and the bridge, and it comes with airport transfers or two hours with a car and driver, and a guaranteed 4 pm check-out. The Alecrim, on the same floor, faces east over the same river for 500 euros less. Every suite takes a 30 percent deposit when you book, refundable until seven days before arrival.

Our verdict

For a Lisbon trip made on foot, with a proper bar to come back to, this is the choice. The position, the rooftop and the feeling of the place are hard to beat.
