Where to eat at and around Artist Residence London

You are on the Cubitt grid of Pimlico, stucco terraces between Victoria station and the river, and the useful streets are Warwick Way, Wilton Road and Churton Street to the east, five to eight minutes away, and Pimlico Road and Ebury Street to the west, nine. The hotel's own ground floor is the neighbourhood's all-day room and cellar bar, and every one of the seven places below is nine minutes or less on foot from the front door.

Artist Residence London: The bar
All-day British cooking, with a cocktail cellar, club room, private dining room and terrace attached

This is the reason the hotel works, and it is a neighbourhood room rather than a tasting-menu kitchen. The ground floor runs from breakfast at half seven on weekdays through lunch to dinner from six until nine, with weekend brunch, and it serves non-residents as well as guests. The setting is the draw, a converted pub with the old cellar below turned into a cocktail room, a club room and private dining beside it and a small terrace at the front. Book for evenings and weekends, walk in for a weekday coffee. Breakfast is not usually included in the room rate, so budget for it.

Breakfast

Breakfast is not included unless your rate says so at booking. It is served in the Cambridge Street Kitchen on the ground floor, Monday to Friday from 7.30 until noon and weekends from 8, off a printed menu rather than a buffet: the full English is 17 pounds, avocado on sourdough 15.50, two eggs on toast 10, a croissant 3.50 and a cappuccino 4, and the same room serves non-residents. If you want a different room, The Orange on Pimlico Road opens its kitchen at 7.30 on weekdays and 8.30 at weekends, nine minutes west.

What to skip

The parade immediately outside the Victoria station concourse and the first stretch of Wilton Road beside it, where the restaurants are priced for people with a train to catch and cooked to match. Seafresh and A. Wong, further down the same road, are the exceptions; keep walking past the station frontage to reach them, and treat everything before that as somewhere to buy a newspaper.

Our verdict

Ten rooms, a bar in the old pub cellar and a quiet Pimlico street outside, at London townhouse money. It works if the house itself is what you came for.
