The Levada do Caldeirão Verde is an irrigation channel the official trail sheet dates to the 18th century, cut along the valley cliffs of Madeira's wet north side, above Santana. The walk follows its edge through the laurel forest, the Laurisilva that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage site in 1999, to the Caldeirão Verde, the green cauldron: a pool at the foot of a tall waterfall, enclosed by rock walls. It is the island's trail PR9, and the official sheet puts it between 872 and 1,020 metres above sea level, so the path is close to level all the way.
The day starts with a hotel pickup at 06:00 or 08:00 in a shared van of up to 8 people. The operator drives you up through Santana to the Queimadas Forest Park, gives you the instructions, the return time and a digital map, and you walk at your own pace. The operator gives the walk as 13 km there and back and about 5 hours, with four tunnels cut through the rock, the longest about 200 metres. The path runs beside the channel all the way, and you can swim in the pool at the end, the operator says, if you bring swimwear. The van brings you back in the afternoon, about 8 hours after it collected you.
Since 2025 every classified trail on Madeira needs a timed slot booked on the regional government's SIMplifica portal. Visitors over 12 pay 4.50 euros for this one, and the slot is not part of the 42 euros: the listing tells you which entry slot to choose for your pickup, 08:00 to 08:30 with the 06:00 van and 09:30 to 10:00 with the 08:00 one, and the operator says it will reserve permits for guests who ask. On 26 October 2026 the regional forestry institute, IFCN, listed PR9 as open in its update of 2 October. The walk ends at the Caldeirão Verde: the stretch beyond it to the Caldeirão do Inferno was reported closed after landslides when the trail reopened in May 2026, and this tour does not go there.
Why this one
The point of this product is the road. Queimadas is on the north side of the island, about an hour by car from the Funchal hotels in our Madeira edit, and the van takes that off your hands for 42 euros a head, with a 24-hour free cancellation. On 26 October 2026 it was rated 4.8 from about 1,300 reviews on GetYourGuide, with transport scored 4.8 out of 5. The nearest rival on the same trail is a guided version at 48 euros, rated 4.7 from about 200 reviews, which suits anyone who would rather walk with a guide than a map. The same price buys a transfer to the PR18 Levada do Rei, rated 4.8 from about 290, if you want a different levada.
Going alone costs more for one or two people: a daytime taxi from Funchal runs to about 65 euros each way on the meter by our estimate, and parking at Queimadas costs 2 euros an hour. Staying at Quinta do Furão in Santana is the exception: Queimadas is 15 minutes away, the van does not collect there, and a taxi plus the 4.50-euro slot is the simpler choice. If this is your first levada, our page on the classic levada, the guided Levada das 25 Fontes walk in Rabaçal, is the one to book first; this is the strongest second. For the laurel forest without a long walk, the west by jeep stops in the Fanal forest.
Good for
- Fit walkers staying in Funchal, Caniço, São Gonçalo, Santa Cruz or Machico
- Anyone who wants the laurel forest without driving the mountain roads
- A second levada after the 25 Fontes in Rabaçal
Not for
- Children under 12, whom the operator does not take
- Anyone with vertigo: the path runs along drops
- Guests at Quinta do Furão, 15 minutes away by taxi

Temperature is the median at 11:00, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 11:00; rain, the share of days with 1 mm or more.
July and August are the dry months
In the five years we looked at, about one day in three brought rain at Queimadas in July and August, against half or more in every other month. The forest is green because of that rain: it does not stop the walk, but it makes the path wet and the tunnels slippery.
From our Madeira hotels
Drive times are routed from each hotel in our Madeira edit to the Queimadas Forest Park, where the walk starts. The listing names its pickup towns as Funchal, Caniço, São Gonçalo, Santa Cruz and Machico only, which covers eight of the ten; it does not collect in Santana or Ponta do Sol.

What guests keep saying
Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.
Praised
- The walk itself: forest, tunnels and the waterfall at the end, which even unhappy reviewers call worth it
- Door-to-door transfers on roads most visitors would rather not drive
Complaints
- Tight timing on the days the van drops walkers above Queimadas
The catch
Book the trail slot before the day
The 4.50-euro SIMplifica slot is not in the tour price, and IFCN gives about 15 minutes' tolerance either side of it. A slot is refunded or moved only if the trail is officially closed that day; otherwise a missed slot is lost.
What to do. Ask the operator to reserve it when you book, or book it yourself on SIMplifica for the slot the listing gives: 08:00 to 08:30 with the 06:00 pickup, 09:30 to 10:00 with the 08:00 one.
The early van gives you the most time
The walk is timed to the van: the listing asks you to finish within the time the driver gives you, and the operator puts the walk at about 5 hours.
What to do. Take the 06:00 pickup if you can, note the return time before you set off, and turn round at a fixed hour.
Check where the van drops you
Several recent reviewers were set down at Pico das Pedras rather than Queimadas. From there the PR9.1 runs 1.9 km along the levada to Queimadas, about 45 minutes each way on the official sheet, which adds about 4 km to the day.
What to do. Ask the driver to confirm the drop point and the pickup time, and if it is Pico das Pedras, allow 90 minutes more.
Four tunnels: take a torch
The operator lists four tunnels cut through the rock, the longest about 200 metres. They are dark and wet, and the path runs beside the water channel inside them.
What to do. Bring a head torch, not a phone light, and shoes with grip.
It rains on more days than not
In the weather data we looked at, half of days or more brought rain at Queimadas in every month except July and August, and at 11:00 the median temperature is 11.5°C to 12.3°C from December to March.
What to do. Pack a waterproof jacket and a warm layer whatever the forecast in Funchal says.
Rockfalls can close the trail
PR9 closed for just over two months at the end of 2024 after rockfalls, and twice in early 2026 after a landslide and for maintenance, reopening on 29 May 2026.
What to do. Check IFCN's trail list the day before; if the trail is closed, cancel the van up to 24 hours ahead and claim the slot back from IFCN.
Questions people ask
Good questions about Caldeirão Verde levada walk, with a return transfer
How long is the Caldeirão Verde levada walk?
About 13 km there and back from Queimadas, by the operator's figure, and about 5 hours of walking. The tour as a whole runs about 8 hours from hotel pickup.
Do you need to book the Caldeirão Verde trail?
Yes. Since 2025 every classified trail on Madeira needs a timed slot on the regional SIMplifica portal. Visitors over 12 pay 4.50 euros for PR9; children aged 12 and under go free but still need a booking.
Is the trail fee included in this tour?
No. The 4.50-euro slot is paid on top of the 42 euros. The operator says it reserves permits for guests who ask, and the listing tells you which slot to pick for your pickup time.
Is the Caldeirão Verde levada open?
IFCN listed PR9 as open in its trail update of 2 October 2026, read on 26 October 2026. It closed for two months earlier in 2026 after a landslide and maintenance, and reopened on 29 May.
Do you need a torch for the Caldeirão Verde tunnels?
Yes. There are four tunnels cut through the rock, the longest about 200 metres. They are dark inside, and a head torch leaves your hands free.
Can children do the Caldeirão Verde walk?
Not on this tour, which does not take children under 12. The path is close to level, but it runs along drops for long stretches.
Is the Caldeirão Verde walk difficult?
The official trail sheet rates it moderate. It stays between 872 and 1,020 metres, so there is little climbing; the length, the narrow path and the wet tunnels are what make it a full day.
The forest levada
A shared van from Funchal, Caniço, Santa Cruz or Machico to Queimadas, then 13 km there and back on your own along a forest levada, through four tunnels, to the Caldeirão Verde waterfall. From 42 euros, plus the 4.50-euro trail slot. Bring a torch.
