This is Funchal eaten in a morning, on foot, with a local guide. The group meets at 09:45 by the H&M entrance on the Infante roundabout, at the western end of the city centre, and sets off at 10:00. The operator, Wine Tours Madeira, lists eight venues on GetYourGuide, with 11 food tastings and 6 drinks, and ends in the old town, the Zona Velha, at the eastern end of the centre.
The order, as the listing gives it: five-year-old Madeira wine at a producer, a Sercial and a Malmsey; carne de vinha d'alhos, pork marinated in wine and garlic, with bolo do caco, the island's flat bread, and a Coral beer; chocolates flavoured with pitanga, the Brazilian cherry, and tamarillo; bolo de mel, the dark honey cake, and biscuits at an old factory; a white wine made from the Barbusano grape, with crostini of black scabbard fish and of avocado with fresh cheese; poncha at a tavern; seasonal fruit in the Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal's farmers' market, which the operator says opened in 1940; and tuna with fried cornmeal and a passion-fruit soda at the last stop, which the listing says comes with a view. The operator describes poncha as sugar cane rum shaken with lemon and sugar.
The wine is the reason to start where it does. Madeira's four noble white grapes run from dry to sweet, and the University of Madeira's wine pages put Sercial at the dry end and Malvasia, sold in English as Malmsey, at the sweet end, so the first glass and the second are the two extremes. The wine is aged warm: either in heated tanks for at least three months at no more than 50°C, or slowly in casks at room temperature, the canteiro method, for at least three years before bottling. A label that names a grape must hold at least 85% of it.
The operator's own page gives the times as 10:00 to 13:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, in English; GetYourGuide lists it as 3.5 hours. It is a small group, booked at least 10 hours ahead, with free cancellation. On 26 October 2026 it cost from 95 euros on GetYourGuide, the same as the operator's own site, where everyone pays the adult price.
Why this one
Two Funchal food walks on GetYourGuide have hundreds of reviews, and on 26 October 2026 this was the higher rated of the two: 4.8 from about 550 reviews, with the guides scored 4.9 out of 5. The other, Funchal: Food, Wine and Cultural Tour with Market Visit, is rated 4.7 from about 890 reviews and costs from 93 euros for 4 hours. GetYourGuide labels that one wheelchair accessible, which makes it the better choice for anyone who uses a wheelchair. For everyone else we would book this one, for the Madeira wine at the start and the sheer number of stops.
Booking direct with Wine Tours Madeira costs the same 95 euros. If you want the wine without the food, the same operator runs a full day at the vineyards with lunch, rated 4.9 from about 180 reviews on GetYourGuide at 210 euros; and its own site sells a Wednesday bar crawl with a poncha workshop, 16:00 to 19:00 from Blandy's Wine Lodge, for 90 euros, the one to pick if you want an evening out rather than a morning. If the sky is clear and the sea is calm, give that day to the boats instead, the whale catamaran or the sunset sail under Cabo Girão, and keep this for a grey one.
Good for
- A first full day in Funchal, to learn what to order for the rest of the week
- Couples and friends who like wine
- A cloudy or wet morning in town
Not for
- Vegetarians, unless the operator confirms a menu first
- Families with young children: the stops are built round wine, beer and poncha, and everyone pays the adult price
- Anyone who wants a sit-down lunch rather than many small tastes
When to go
What the weather is like month by month in central Funchal at 11:00, the middle of the tour, from Open-Meteo's historical weather for 2021 to 2025.
| Month | Temperature | Rainy days |

| Apr | 19°C / 17°C | 36% |
| May | 21°C / 18°C | 37% |
| Jun | 22°C / 20°C | 35% |
| Jul | 25°C / 23°C | 11% |
| Aug | 26°C / 25°C | 13% |
| Sept | 25°C / 23°C | 43% |
| Oct | 24°C / 21°C | 43% |
| Nov | 21°C / 19°C | 33% |
| Dec | 18°C / 16°C | 44% |
Temperature is the median at 11:00 in central Funchal, with the coldest day in ten after it. Rainy days is the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more, modelled from Open-Meteo history for 2021 to 2025.
Good on a grey day
In the data we looked at, July and August were the dry months, with 1 mm of rain or more on 11% and 13% of days. From September to June that share was between a third and a half of days. Most of the stops are shops, bars and restaurants, and the temperature at 11:00 stayed between 17.6°C and 26.0°C all year, so this is one of the few things on Madeira that a wet morning does not spoil.
From our Madeira hotels
Drive times are routed from each hotel in our Madeira edit to the Infante roundabout, where the tour meets by the H&M entrance; there is no pickup. Six of the hotels are an easy walk: 3 minutes from Hotel Madeira, 7 from the Barceló Funchal Oldtown, 14 from the Savoy Palace, 19 from Reid's Palace and 24 to 25 from The Cliff Bay and the Vidamar, routed on foot. From Caniço, Ponta do Sol or Santana, take a taxi or the bus, and allow for the tour ending in the old town.

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.
Praised
- Guides who know the city and the food, scored 4.9 out of 5
- Enough to eat that many treat it as lunch
- The last stop, tuna and fried cornmeal with a view
Complaints
- The order: wine and sweets come before most of the savoury food
The catch
It starts with wine at 10:00
The first stop pours two Madeira wines, and the savoury food comes later in the morning. Reviewers on the operator's own site advise eating only a light breakfast, since the tastings add up to more than a lunch.
What to do. Have coffee and something small before you meet at 09:45, and plan nothing big to eat until the evening.
Four days a week, in English
The operator runs the group tour on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, in English, and it must be booked at least 10 hours ahead. Other languages are offered only as private tours.
What to do. Check the calendar when you book your week, and book early if you have only one of those days free.
Pork and fish are on the menu
The tastings include pork marinated in wine and garlic, black scabbard fish and tuna, and the listing does not mention vegetarian or allergy options.
What to do. If you do not eat meat or fish, or have an allergy, message the operator through GetYourGuide before you pay.
It ends in the old town
The last stop is in the Zona Velha, at the eastern end of the centre, not back at the Infante roundabout where the tour starts. Routed on foot from the old town, the Barceló Funchal Oldtown is 12 minutes away and Hotel Madeira 17, but Reid's Palace is 36 and The Cliff Bay and the Vidamar 42 to 43.
What to do. After a morning of wine, take a taxi back to the Lido or the hotels west of the centre, or walk it slowly along the seafront.
Children pay the adult price
The operator's site says adult pricing applies to everyone, and the drinks include wine, beer and poncha.
What to do. Bring older children who like food, or leave this one for the adults.
