Madeira's east is the part of the island with the most to see and the worst roads to see it from behind a wheel: a mountain road to the third-highest summit, a forest pass, a north coast of steep valleys and a bare peninsula at the end. This tour does it in a day from Funchal. Lido Tours, a Funchal company running its own minibuses since 1996, collects you from selected hotels in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Caniço, or from a bus stop near yours, and leaves at 09:00. The operator's minibuses take up to 16 people.

The first stop is Terreiro da Luta above Monte, where a statue of Our Lady of Peace stands on a monument the operator says Madeirans promised after German submarines attacked Funchal in 1917. Then the road climbs to Pico do Arieiro. Visit Madeira gives it as 1,818 metres, the island's third-highest point, with views on a clear day to Ponta de São Lourenço, the Curral das Freiras valley and Porto Santo; it is the highest summit on the island you can drive to. Often the cloud lies below you as a white sea. From there the tour drops through the laurel forest to Ribeiro Frio, at about 860 metres, a trout farm and the start of several levada walks. The laurisilva around it is a relic of forests that once covered much of southern Europe, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

Lunch is in Santana, a stop of about 90 minutes by the operator's timetable, with a choice of restaurants and cafés. Santana's houses are the island's emblem: triangular, built of wood, thatched with wheat or rye straw, painted white with red doors and blue trim, a steep roof to shed the north coast's rain. After Portela the road runs east to Ponta de São Lourenço, the island's narrow last few kilometres of cliff and scrub, a protected area since 1982, where the north and south coasts are both in view at once. The last stop is the viewpoint over Machico, the bay where the operator says Zarco and Teixeira landed in 1419, and you are back at about 17:00.

On 26 October 2026 GetYourGuide sold it from 38.70 euros, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and booking at least 10 hours ahead, and scored the guiding 4.8 out of 5, the transport 4.7 and the value 4.7, from about 3,900 reviews. The same tour costs 43 euros on the operator's own site.

Why this one

This is the most-reviewed east Madeira day on GetYourGuide, about 3,900 reviews at 4.7, from a local firm that owns its minibuses and runs the tour every day. On 26 October 2026 it was 4.30 euros cheaper on GetYourGuide than on Lido Tours' own site, where the price was 43 euros, so booking here costs you nothing extra. Its closest rival, the Eastern Madeira Full-Day Tour with Rum Tasting, was 35 euros, also rated 4.7 from about 1,900 reviews, sold as a small group, and adds the Guindaste skywalk, Ponta do Rosto and a rum tasting at Porto da Cruz. Pick that one if a tasting matters more to you than the extra reviews.

If you would rather walk than look, the Caniçal São Lourenço Hike Transfer, 37 euros and rated 4.8 from about 1,200 reviews, drops you at the start of the PR8 trail along the peninsula and helps you book the required trail slot. For the summit at dawn and the walk to Pedra Rija, our page The sunrise above the clouds covers Pico do Arieiro properly; for a day in the forest above Santana, The forest levada; and for the other half of the island, The west, by jeep. With a hire car you can do every stop on this tour for nothing but fuel and parking; what the 38.70 euros buys is a day without the mountain roads, and someone to explain what you are looking at.

Good for

  • A first look at the east without hiring a car
  • Families who want the mountains and the coast without a hike
  • Visitors short of time who want the island's best-known sights in one day

Not for

  • Hikers: the stops are viewpoints, not walks
  • Anyone hoping to linger: most stops are short
  • Families with a pushchair, which the operator does not allow on board

When to go

What it is like at 10:00 on the summit of Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 metres, month by month, from five years of historical weather modelled for that place and height. The tour leaves Funchal at 09:00 and reaches the summit in the morning.

Temperature is the median at 10:00 on the summit, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little mid or high cloud above the summit at 10:00; low cloud, which often lies below the summit as a sea of cloud and sometimes wraps round it, is not counted. Gusty is the share of days with gusts over 50 km/h at that hour.

Summer is the clear season on the summit

In the five years we looked at, the sky above Pico do Arieiro at 10:00 was clear on 99% of July days and 88% of August days, against about half of days from December to March. Summer mornings there were also the mildest, a median of 12.0°C in July and 13.4°C in August; in January to March the median was under 5°C, and one day in ten was colder than 2.5°C.

From our Madeira hotels

Drive times are routed to the Lido Tours office on Estrada Monumental, in Funchal's Lido area. The operator collects from selected hotels in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Caniço where its minibus can stop, and otherwise from a nearby bus stop or one of its set points in Funchal; it confirms your pickup point and time after you book. Our Funchal hotels and Sentido Galomar in Caniço de Baixo fall in that area. Ponta do Sol and Santana do not.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Guides who know the island and point out what you would miss from a car
  • Safe, careful driving on the mountain roads, and punctual pickups
  • A great deal of Madeira seen in one day for the price

Complaints

  • Stops at the viewpoints are short, at around 20 to 30 minutes

The catch

  1. It is cold at 1,818 metres

In the five years we looked at, the median at 10:00 on Pico do Arieiro was 4.7°C in January and 10.4°C in October, and gusts topped 50 km/h on about a third of winter mornings. You leave Funchal in shirtsleeves.

What to do. Take a fleece or a warm jacket and a waterproof in any month, and wear closed shoes.

  2. The summit can be in cloud

The operator says that on most days you look down on the clouds from Pico do Arieiro, but not every day. In our weather data the sky above the summit was clear on 99% of July mornings and about half of winter ones, and the listing says the road is occasionally closed by weather, in which case the operator offers another stop.

What to do. For the best chance of the view, go between June and September; if the summit matters most to you, see our page The sunrise above the clouds.

  3. Lunch is extra

Lunch is not included in the price. The 90-minute stop in Santana has several restaurants and cafés to choose from, and the guide is happy to book a table for you.

What to do. Carry some cash for lunch and a drink.

  4. Sit near the front

Much of the day is spent on mountain roads, and the guide is also the driver, so the commentary comes from the front of the minibus.

What to do. Be ready at your pickup point early and take a seat near the front; take something for travel sickness if bends bother you.

  5. Leave the pushchair at the hotel

The operator does not allow pushchairs on its minibus tours and asks parents to keep children with them at every stop.

What to do. Bring a baby carrier for small children.

  6. Pickup is south coast only

The operator collects in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Caniço. From Quinta do Furão in Santana it is 49 minutes' drive to the start, and from Ponta do Sol 26 minutes.

What to do. Staying in Santana or the west, drive into Funchal for the start, or see our levada or jeep pages.

Does it pick up from my hotel?

From selected hotels in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Caniço where the minibus can stop; otherwise from a bus stop nearby or one of five set points in Funchal, including the cruise terminal. The operator sends your time and place after booking.
