Why this one
Torel Avantgarde sells 60 rooms and suites in twelve categories, and what divides them is the river more than the floor area. The Classic, Executive and Executive Superior, 27 of the 38 rooms, name no view of the Douro, and neither do the Suite and Superior Suite priced above them. The Executive Deluxe, 27 to 31 m² with a balcony overlooking the river, is where the view begins. For 9 to 11 February 2027, with taxes and fees, it was 393 euros a night against 276 for a Classic: 117 euros a night for the thing in the photograph. Those are prices for two nights in February, not a quote for your dates, so read them for the gaps between the rungs.
Above the pick the ladder is shaped by baths and space, and it is uneven. The Deluxe Junior Suite adds a sitting room and 38 m² for 30 euros more, the best value among the river rooms if one of its two is free. The Executive Royal, 90 euros above the pick, adds a circular bath and a separate shower. The Deluxe Suite has that bath too but, at 35 m², is smaller than the Junior Suite, and the Royal Suite adds a fireplace and 13 to 15 m² for 20 euros more than that. The Royal Jacuzzi Suite and the Maisonette are one of each. The Suite and Superior Suite are the ones to read twice: they sound like upgrades, at 340 and 371 euros, but name no river, and the Executive Deluxe has it for 22 to 53 euros more.
- Ask for
- Nothing is needed to get the river: every Executive Deluxe has the balcony. You book a category, not a named room, but the hotel's own page for Isadora Duncan, one of the five on its Executive Deluxe list, describes a terrace with an outdoor bathtub over the Douro, though the same page also calls it an Executive Royal. Ask for it by name, and get the answer in writing. The same goes at the bottom of the ladder: the hotel's own page for Zaha Hadid, one of the three Classics, describes a balcony over the Douro.
- Avoid
- The Classic, unless price is the whole point: 18 to 22 m², a shower and no view named. The Executive and Executive Superior are sold without the river too. And read the Suite and Superior Suite twice: they sound like upgrades but name no view, and the Executive Deluxe, which has one, cost only 22 to 53 euros more for the same February nights.
Suites against rooms
Two categories above the pick are worth singling out. The Deluxe Junior Suite, 38 m² with a sitting room and a balcony over the Douro, was 423 euros a night for the same February nights, 30 above the Executive Deluxe and less than one weekday executive lunch downstairs. There are two, both for two people, so ask for one first.
The other is the Maisonette, 77 m² with a private outdoor pool, garden, solarium, outdoor jacuzzi and kitchenette, and the only room with a pool of its own, at 908 euros a night. The Royal Jacuzzi Suite, also a one-off, has two balconies and an outdoor jacuzzi over the river, at 675. If it is the bath you want, the hotel's own pages for Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Charlie Chaplin, all Executive Royals, put it in the room with the river in view. And families should note that only five categories take a third guest, four suites and the Maisonette; the plain Suite, at 340 euros, is the cheapest.

Our verdict
If the room is the point of the trip, this is the Porto hotel that treats it that way. Pay for the balcony and accept the hill.
