Where to eat at and around Torel Avantgarde

You are on Rua da Restauração, on the hillside between the Palácio de Cristal gardens and the Clérigos tower, and you do not need a car: everything below is ten minutes or less on foot. The hotel's restaurant, Digby, home to Tenro by Digby's aged beef, serves dinner nightly and à la carte lunch at weekends, with a 35 euro executive lunch on weekdays. For a big night, the two-star Antiqvvm is eleven minutes away: tasting menus only, from 185 euros, reservations required.

Torel Avantgarde: Digby, under its hanging garden
Chef João FigueirinhasContemporary Portuguese with an aged-beef sideline, behind glass over the pool terrace and the Douro

The restaurant runs along one wing of the hotel behind floor-to-ceiling glass, with the pool terrace in front and the Douro and Gaia beyond it, which is the reason to book a table whether or not you are sleeping upstairs. João Figueirinhas, who cooked at The Yeatman and Euskalduna Studio, treats old Portuguese dishes with a lighter hand and runs an aged-beef line with El Capricho on the side. There is no Michelin recognition in the 2026 guide; the terrace at dusk is the argument, and the weekday executive lunch at EUR 35 is the sensible way in.

Breakfast

Breakfast is a buffet, by the hotel's own description, and breakfast in bed is offered too. The hotel does not publish a price for it or say where it is served, so check what your rate includes, and on a room-only rate ask what it costs. Guests single out breakfast with the Douro below. Our verdict

If the room is the point of the trip, this is the Porto hotel that treats it that way. Pay for the balcony and accept the hill.
