The Yeatman's Panoramic rooms and suites face old Porto from terraces in Gaia, and The Rebello Hotel & Spa's River studios and suites look straight at Ribeira from the quay. Torel Avantgarde's Deluxe and Royal rooms have river balconies. The Vintage House Hotel's river-view rooms overlook the Douro at Pinhão, and 1872 River House's Superior rooms are the cheapest river view.

Porto faces its river, and the view you get depends on the bank you sleep on. From Vila Nova de Gaia you look at Porto itself: the old town climbing above Ribeira, with the Dom Luís I bridge to one side. From the Porto bank you look across at Gaia's port lodges, either from Ribeira, just above the quay, or from the Miragaia hillside to the west, above the crowds. A river-facing room in Ribeira has the most atmosphere, and the most noise.
In every hotel on this list the view comes with a room category, not with luck, and the name tells you which: Panoramic at The Yeatman; River at The Rebello Hotel & Spa, The Vintage House Hotel and 1872 River House; Deluxe, Royal or the Maisonette at Torel Avantgarde. Book that category by name and check that the confirmation says so. Up the valley at Pinhão the vineyard terraces rise straight from the water, and the view is the whole stay.
The Yeatman is stepped down the Gaia hillside among the port lodges, facing back across the Douro at the old town: the view of Porto, rather than from it. The river panorama begins with the Superior Deluxe Panoramic Room, sold only on floors 5, 6 and 7, each with a furnished private terrace over the river and the old town, a deep soaking tub and whitewashed shutters that open the bathroom to the view.
Every category with Panoramic in its name, up to the Presidential Suite Panoramic, is sold with the Douro and Porto in view; the Executive and Superior Rooms, the plain Suites and the Master Suite Garden look over Porto or the gardens instead. The view carries into the public rooms too: the two-star dining room has the city spread out below it, the 360º Bar is on the roof, and breakfast can be taken out on the Orangerie terrace.

Superior Deluxe Panoramic Room
€366 a night
The first rung where every room has a furnished terrace over the Douro and the old town; the Executive and Superior Rooms below it look over Porto or the gardens.
The Rebello Hotel & Spa is down on the Cais de Gaia in converted 19th-century warehouses, about a kilometre downstream of the Dom Luís I bridge. Its river side looks across the water at Ribeira stacked up the far bank, with the bridge to one side: the postcard view of Porto, from the bank opposite. Only the categories with River in their name are sold with the Douro and old Porto in the window, from the 37 m² River Studio up to the two-bedroom River suites for four, and every one has a fully fitted kitchen.
The same frame is on the roof at Bello, the rooftop bar, with the quay and the rabelo boats below and Sunday brunch from noon. It fills on summer evenings, so reserve a table for sunset.

One Bedroom River Suite
65 to 130 m²€292 a night
The River prefix buys the Douro and old Porto in the window; this one adds a separate living room to the kitchen, in 65 to 130 m² on one level, with no duplex stairs.
Torel Avantgarde sits on the Miragaia hillside west of Ribeira, high above the river, and its Deluxe and Royal categories and the Maisonette are the rooms with a balcony over the Douro and Gaia. The view begins with the Executive Deluxe Room, and there are only five of them. Above it, the Deluxe Junior Suite adds a sitting room to the same balcony, and the Executive Royal Room puts a circular bath by the window.
The river runs through the public spaces as well. The outdoor pool in the Camellia Garden looks over the Douro, the Digby dining room runs behind floor-to-ceiling glass with the pool terrace and the river beyond, and guests single out breakfast with the Douro below. This is the river view without Ribeira's crowds under the window.

Executive Deluxe Room
27 to 31 m²€393 a night
The first rung sold with a balcony over the Douro, 27 to 31 m²; no cheaper category in the house is sold with the river.
The Vintage House Hotel was Taylor's 19th-century house and wine store, on the riverbank at Pinhão beside the road bridge, and in the Douro valley that position is the view: the river traffic passing below, and the vineyard terraces climbing straight from the water. Every category comes with a balcony or terrace, and from the Classic Room up each one is sold facing the river. The Standard Room, the same size, is described with a river or a land view, so book the category with the river in its name.
The view runs through the day. Breakfast is served in the Salão do Rio, a high-ceilinged room with big windows and a terrace over the Douro, lunch on Rabelo's riverside terrace comes with the boats going past, and the Library Bar's terrace looks up at the vineyards.

Classic Room with a View of the River Douro
35 m²€235 a night
35 m² with the river written into the category name and a balcony or terrace facing it; the Standard Room, the same size, may look at the land instead.
1872 River House is a guesthouse of eight rooms in a restored townhouse on Rua do Infante D. Henrique, one terrace above the Ribeira quays. Half of them, the Superior Rooms with River View, look at the Douro and the Dom Luís I bridge; the Charm rooms face the street, so the river comes with the category you book. Among our ten, it is the least expensive way to have the river outside the window.
Breakfast is served from 8 to 11 in a living room facing the water, so check that your rate includes it. The river rooms also face the quay, which is lively on summer evenings, and the house offers ear plugs on request.

If the sea appeals more than the river, Vila Foz Hotel & Spa faces the Atlantic across the Foz promenade, and its Onice Sea View Room is the cheapest category with the sea guaranteed, from a small balcony.

Questions people ask
Good questions about Porto & the Douro
Is the view better from Porto or from Vila Nova de Gaia?
From Gaia you see Porto: the old town stacked up the hill above Ribeira, with the Dom Luís I bridge to one side. That is why The Yeatman's Panoramic rooms, high on the hillside, and The Rebello Hotel & Spa's River suites on the quay lead this list. From the Porto bank you look back at Gaia's port lodges: Torel Avantgarde's Deluxe and Royal balconies face Gaia from Miragaia, and the Superior Rooms with River View at 1872 River House look at the water and the bridge from Ribeira. The banks are close: Praça da Ribeira to Sandeman's lodge is twelve minutes on foot over the lower deck.
Which Porto hotels have a balcony or terrace over the river?
At The Yeatman, every Superior Deluxe Panoramic Room has a furnished private terrace over the Douro and the old town, on floors 5 to 7. At Torel Avantgarde, the Deluxe and Royal categories and the Maisonette have balconies over the river. At The Rebello Hotel & Spa, the One Bedroom Duplex River Suite comes with a terrace of up to 22 m²; in the other River categories a terrace is an extra, so ask for one. Up the valley, every category at The Vintage House Hotel has a balcony or terrace, facing the river from the Classic Room up.
How much does a river-view room cost in Porto?
Least at 1872 River House, typically from about 160 euros a night in low season, where the river rooms are the dearer of its two categories. The Rebello Hotel & Spa is typically from about 155, but its view starts one step up, with the River Studio. Torel Avantgarde is typically from about 215 and The Yeatman from about 290, and at both the river starts a few categories up, at the Executive Deluxe Room and the Superior Deluxe Panoramic Room. January and February are the cheapest months; in summer and September the city hotels run about two to three times higher.
Are river-view rooms in Ribeira noisy at night?
They can be on summer weekends. The Ribeira quay is busy from lunch until late, and the rooms that look at the river look at the crowds too; on 23 June São João fills both waterfronts and the fireworks go up at 23:59. 1872 River House offers ear plugs on request. For the river with calmer nights, sleep above the water: The Yeatman, up the hill on Rua do Choupelo, or Torel Avantgarde, on the Miragaia hillside.
Which Douro valley hotel has a balcony with every room?
The Vintage House Hotel, on the riverbank at Pinhão, eight minutes on foot from the station. Every category has a balcony or terrace, and from the Classic Room with a View of the River Douro up each is sold facing the river. Pinhão is 97 minutes from central Porto by car, or 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 21 on the four trains a day that run from Campanhã without a change, so give it two nights rather than a day trip.
How did you choose these hotels?
Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
