Value in Porto comes down to the calendar and to what the room buys. November to February, mild and wet, is cheaper, and at most of these hotels January and February are the lowest of all. May to early October is the dry, warm peak, and up the Douro the harvest, from mid-September to early October, is the dearest fortnight.
At the lower end the money buys a river window in a Ribeira guesthouse, two pools and a spa on Rua das Flores, or a kitchen in every suite on the Gaia quay. Further up it buys the Atlantic and a starred dining room in Foz, a design hotel's river balcony, the Douro from a Pinhão balcony, or a spa pool free for guests on Aliados. Porto and Gaia add a tourist tax of 3 euros a person a night, from 13 in Porto and 16 in Gaia, for up to seven nights; the valley municipalities list none. Spend on what you will use, not on a famous name.
1872 River House is eight rooms in a restored 1872 townhouse above the Ribeira quays, and half of them, the Superior Rooms, look at the river and the Dom Luís I bridge. The house typically starts from about 160 euros a night in low season: January and February are the floor, and June, September and October run two and a half times higher.
What the money buys is the window and the position. Every room has a double bed, a desk, a minibar, air conditioning and a shower, and breakfast, with homemade pastries, local cheeses and eggs cooked to order, is served from 8am to 11am in a living room facing the Douro: check that your rate includes it. There is no restaurant, pool or spa, and four minutes from Praça da Ribeira you will not miss them.

Superior Room with River View

Three square metres more than a Charm room, and the Douro and the bridge in the window instead of the street: the view is what makes this address good value.
Casa da Companhia gives you more hotel than its rate suggests: a 16th-century house of 40 rooms on pedestrian Rua das Flores, with a heated indoor pool, a small rooftop pool that looks at the cathedral, a L'Occitane spa with its own sauna and Turkish bath, and a gym for over-16s. Rates are lowest in January and February, typically from about 165 euros a night, roughly double from May to October, and run higher still in September.
Breakfast is one of the things guests praise most, along with the staff who run it, so check that your rate includes it. Dinner can be cheap without leaving the building: A Tasquinha, the informal restaurant, serves petiscos from 3 euros and a francesinha at 11, from 12:30 to 22:00.

The Rebello Hotel & Spa is the value choice for anyone who wants space. All 103 of its studios and suites have a fully fitted kitchen, from 37 m² studios to two- and three-bedroom duplexes that sleep four and six, so you can cook breakfast or dinner in, with the stalls of Mercado Beira-Rio seven minutes' walk away and open from 7:00, Monday to Saturday. It typically starts from about 155 euros a night in low season; January is its cheapest month, and May and summer weekends run around double.
The building adds a 24-hour gym for guests, a Roman-style spa with a semi-heated pool, and Bello, a rooftop bar that looks straight at Ribeira and the bridge. Families gain twice: there is a kids' club, Little Rebels, and Gaia's tourist tax starts at 16 rather than Porto's 13, so children of 13 to 15 pay nothing here, where Porto would charge them.

Vila Foz Hotel & Spa has the Atlantic across the road, a Michelin-starred dining room and a spa with a heated indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and cold plunge, and the smart money is in the new wing. Its Onice Sea View Room, 32 m² with a small balcony over the ocean, is the cheapest category that guarantees the sea, while the palace's only room sold on the view, the Manor House Ocean Front Room, is 27 m² with no balcony the hotel mentions, and costs far more.
Rooms typically start from about 205 euros a night in low season. January and February are the cheapest months, and June runs at roughly double the winter average. Breakfast, served in Flor de Lis, is one guests single out, for the oysters and the eggs cooked to order, so check that your rate includes it.

Torel Avantgarde is where the rate buys design: 60 rooms and suites, each taking its name and mood from an avant-garde figure, in a hotel with a Michelin Key. The Camellia Garden has an outdoor pool over the Douro, and the Calla spa a heated indoor pool, sauna and sensory showers. Rooms typically start from about 215 euros a night in low season; winter is the cheap season, and September averages more than double February.
The smart spend is on the ladder. The river starts at the Executive Deluxe Room, 27 to 31 m² with a balcony over the Douro, and the Deluxe Junior Suite adds a sitting room and 38 m² to the same view for a small step up, while the Suite and Superior Suite sound grander but name no view of the river.

The Vintage House Hotel has the lowest starting price of our three Douro valley hotels, and it is the one you can reach by train and walk into. Rooms typically start from about 210 euros a night in low season, from November to March, when the pool is shut. Every room has a balcony or terrace, all but the Standard Room facing the river, and guests have a tennis court with rackets and balls free, a garden pool with its own bar from April to October and the Library Bar, with its fireplace, until midnight.
The train is the other saving. A one-way ticket from Campanhã to Pinhão is 12.35 euros, the station is eight minutes' walk from the hotel, and Alijó, the municipality that holds Pinhão, lists no overnight tax.

Classic Room with a View of the River Douro

At The One Monumental Palace the rate buys more than the room. The Grand Bleu Spa's heated indoor pool, hammam, sauna and 24-hour gym are free for guests, the address on Avenida dos Aliados puts the Baixa on foot, and Le Monument, with its Michelin star, is downstairs from Tuesday to Saturday. Rooms typically start from about 285 euros a night in low season, and winter is the time to come: April costs more, and summer and September more again.
The ladder is simple to read. The Superior and the Deluxe are both 29 m², so the Deluxe costs more for height and light, not space, and Grand Deluxe City Views is the only room category sold on its view.
