Which room to book at The Ivens

The Ivens Balcony. It is no bigger than the Capelo below it, 22 square metres, but it is the only room under the suites with outdoor space and the first one the hotel sells on what it looks at: a small balcony over the city. Take it on a high floor, because the balcony is a door onto the outside and Rocco, on the ground floor, runs until one in the morning.

Why this one

The Ivens sells three room categories at 22 square metres. The Capelo King and Capelo Twin differ only in their beds, are spread across all five floors, and get tranquillity and harmony from the hotel's own page rather than a view; the Ivens Balcony is the same floor area with a small balcony that, in the hotel's words, overlooks the city. That makes it the first rung where you know what is outside the window before you arrive, and the only room below the suites where you can stand outside. On a low floor, though, a door to the outside is the last thing a light sleeper wants, which is why the floor you are given matters as much as the category you book.

Above it, the ladder is about floor area. The Superior adds eight square metres and names no outlook; the Premium adds thirteen, a lounge area and a view of the city centre, and is the smallest room that takes a third guest. The two suite categories are both 50 square metres: the Suites buy a separate living room and a second bathroom, while the two Signature Suites on the top floor trade the second bathroom for a private terrace over the city and the Tagus, a bathtub and a one-way transfer. If the river view is the point, it is one of those two.

Ask for
Ask for the highest floor available, when you book and again at check-in, and for a room over Rua Capelo rather than one near Rocco's own door on Rua Ivens. Three of you should book the Premium, the first category that takes a rollaway; anyone who needs an accessible room should name the Superior, the only category that has them. If you take a Capelo, ask which way it faces before you arrive.
Avoid
A low-floor Ivens Balcony if you sleep lightly: the balcony door opens onto the outside, and the restaurant on the ground floor runs until one in the morning. The Capelo Twin or the Superior for three people, since neither takes a rollaway. And any Capelo booked in the hope of the river, which the hotel does not attach to that category.

Suites against rooms

Two ideas are worth separating. The Suites, 50 square metres with a separate living room and two bathrooms, are the practical choice for a family or for two people who want a door to close between them; the hotel's own page pitches them at families and adds the valet free, conditions applying. The Signature Suites are the same floor area on the top floor, with a private terrace looking over the city and the Tagus, a bathtub, a welcome amenity, personalised check-in and a one-way transfer. They are the only rooms sold on the river view, and there are two of them, so book early for any date that matters.

The hotel's own list of facts also includes a 150 square metre penthouse with a view of the river.

Our verdict

The most fun hotel in central Lisbon. Book a higher floor, eat at Rocco and enjoy the theatre of it.
