Two Michelin stars, José Avillez · €€€€
José Avillez's flagship, three minutes from the door, with two Michelin stars in the 2026 guide. The kitchen retells Portuguese cooking through a tasting menu or a short à la carte, each diner choosing their own, and the wine list runs past 350 entries, about four fifths of them Portuguese. Its own site gives Tuesday to Saturday, lunch 12:30 to 15:00 and dinner 19:00 to 22:00, closed Sunday and Monday. Book well ahead.

Custard tart bakery, open late · €
The first Manteigaria, in the Art Nouveau building of 1900 that housed the old Manteigaria União butter cooperative, whose name is still on the façade. The custard tarts come out of the oven all day, and you can watch the next batch being made inside. Its own page gives 8:00 to midnight, which makes it both a breakfast for anyone whose rate leaves it out and the answer to a late craving.

Historic beer hall, former convent · €€
A beer hall in a former convent that, by its own account, survived an earthquake and two fires, and calls itself the oldest and most beautiful cervejaria in Portugal. The reason to go is the building, tables set in the old refectory, the arches and the cloisters among modernist panels and tiles, with seafood, steak and petiscos to match. Its own site gives noon to midnight Sunday to Thursday, and until one on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays.

Its own site gives a midnight close every day, opening at 13:00 Thursday to Sunday, 19:00 on Mondays and 18:00 daily in August; ring ahead for a Tuesday or Wednesday lunch.

Breakfast is not included unless your rate says so: the hotel's booking pages list it at Rocco for a fee, and Rocco's own menu prices it at 42 euros a person. It is served from 6:30 to 10:30 every day in the Ristorante and the Terrazza, a buffet of bread and pastry with eggs, pancakes and porridge cooked to order. The easy alternative is Manteigaria on Praça Luís de Camões, seven minutes on foot and open from 8:00, where a custard tart or two will do for most mornings.
