The Ivens takes its name from Roberto Ivens, the 19th-century Portuguese explorer, and runs with it: palm-print walls, brass, velvet and dark wood across 87 rooms in a former newspaper building on Rua Capelo. It opened in 2021 under Marriott's Autograph Collection, so you get points and a global booking system attached to a property that looks like nothing else in the city.
The location is as central as Chiado gets, two minutes from Praça Luís de Camões and five from the river. Rocco, the Italian restaurant on the ground floor, is a destination in its own right and reliably praised. Guest feedback returns to two things: the rooms are fun, and the staff are good at solving problems.
It suits a playful city break, a group of friends, or anyone who finds minimalist hotels cold. It is not a quiet-luxury hotel and does not pretend to be. If you want calm, look at Sublime Lisboa; if you want to enjoy your hotel in the evening as much as the city, this is it.
