Where to eat at and around Town Hall Hotel

You are in Bethnal Green, on the corner where Cambridge Heath Road crosses the railway, with the Young V&A four minutes down the road and Paradise Row's arches two streets south. It is not a restaurant district and does not pretend to be one. What it has is a two-star kitchen on the ground floor, a relaxed one on the first, and, within seven minutes of the door, a short list of the kind of places East London does well: an arch full of beer, a warehouse bistro, a canal-side trattoria and a cocktail bar that people cross the city for.

Town Hall Hotel: A plate at Da Terra

Da Terra

Two Michelin starsChef Rafael CagaliBrazilian and Italian tasting menus in the old town hall's ground floor

Rafael Cagali opened Da Terra in January 2019, won a first star within eight months and a second in 2021, and the 2026 guide keeps both. The cooking is Brazilian and Italian at the same time, built on his São Paulo childhood and on kitchens in Spain, Italy and the UK. The tasting menu is £275, with a shorter one at £190 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, a three-course set lunch at £110 from Thursday to Saturday, and pairings at £160. Allow three hours for the full menu and two for lunch. A four-week refurbishment in October 2024 extended the open kitchen, reworked the room and added a pre-dining lounge that hotel guests can use for a drink on request. The days are the thing to plan around: dinner runs Wednesday to Saturday with a last sitting at 20:00, and lunch Thursday to Saturday with a last sitting at 13:30, so a Sunday to Tuesday stay misses it entirely.

Town Hall Hotel: Finishing a dish by hand

Restaurant Elis

Chef Rafael CagaliRelaxed Brazilian-Italian sharing plates on the first floor

Cagali's second restaurant here, in the first-floor room that used to be Corner Room, named after the singer Elis Regina and after his mother's São Paulo restaurant. It is the loose version of the same heritage: sharing plates, snacks, rustic dishes and a short wine list, in a bright room of about a dozen tables. It holds no star of its own, and it is the answer on the nights Da Terra is dark or a tasting menu is too much. Its own site gives dinner Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to 21:00 and lunch Thursday to Saturday from 12:30 to 14:30, with no dinner on Sunday. Breakfast for hotel guests is served in the same room daily, and it is charged rather than included, which is worth knowing before you book a rate.

On our shortlists

Within ten minutes on foot

  • Classic cocktail bar, daily-changing menu · ££

The nightcap, three minutes down Cambridge Heath Road. Its own site describes classic cocktails from a menu that changes daily, opening at 17:00 until late from Sunday to Thursday and a little later on Friday and Saturday, with walk-ins accepted and reservations by phone only, recommended but not essential. There is no kitchen mentioned, so eat first. It is the reason to be in Bethnal Green after Da Terra rather than in a taxi.

  • KADA London

    5 min walk

Filipino barbecue, cocktails and karaoke · ££

On Paradise Row, in the run of arches under the railway, doing Filipino barbecue and the comfort dishes its owners grew up on, with cocktails and, later on, karaoke. Its own site gives the address and a booking link but no weekly hours, so check before you walk down. Book for a group: the terms mention deposits and minimum spends for larger parties. Loud by design, and the antidote to a three-hour tasting menu.

  • Plant-based cafe in a community house · £

The breakfast answer if you booked room-only. It sits inside St Margaret's House, a community building four minutes from the hotel, is entirely vegan, and its own page gives Tuesday to Sunday from 08:30 to 16:00, breakfast from 09:00 to noon and to 13:00 at weekends, then lunch until 16:00, or 15:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Closed Monday. Cheap, unhurried and full of the neighbourhood.

  • Mother Kelly's

    5 min walk

Craft beer taproom in a railway arch · £

Twenty-two taps and fridges of cans and bottles from independent breweries, in an arch on Paradise Row with tables outside. Its own page gives Monday to Wednesday from 16:00 to 23:00, Thursday from noon to 23:00, Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 23:00, says it operates best on walk-ins, and that food comes from seasonal pop-up vendors rather than a kitchen. Go for the beer, not for dinner.

  • Bistrotheque

Warehouse bistro, weekend brunch and dinner · £££

A warehouse room on a back street north of the railway, and the East End's dressed-up bistro. Its own info page gives dinner Wednesday to Saturday from 18:00 to 21:30 on summer hours, weekend brunch from 11:00 to 16:00, and an annual closure from 2 to 31 August, so check the month. Breakfast

Breakfast is not included on the standard rate: room-only and room-with-breakfast are sold as separate choices, and for two adults on 19 to 20 January 2027 it was a 39 pound add-on. It is an a la carte menu of English, American and European dishes served daily in Elis on the first floor, from 07:00 to 10:30 on weekdays and 07:00 to 11:00 at weekends on the hotel's about page, and guests describe the service as slow at busy times. The Gallery Cafe, four minutes away, opens at 08:30 from Tuesday to Sunday for a cheaper plant-based plate, and Bistrotheque does weekend brunch from 11:00.

What to skip

The chain coffee and takeaway units around the station and along the Cambridge Heath Road frontage. They exist for commuters, and on a Sunday, when the hotel serves nothing after breakfast but a cocktail at Silk Weaver from 17:00, they will tempt you. Everything above is within seven minutes in the other direction, and Ombra and Mother Kelly's are open.

Our verdict

Book it for Da Terra and for the building, and check the restaurant's days before you fix the dates. If you want to step out of the door into central London, this is the wrong postcode.
