Which room to book at Shutters on the Beach

The Ocean View Room. It is the first category the hotel sells with the sea in view, with two step-out balconies and a personal reading library, and on a December Tuesday it cost about $490 a night more than the entry room. Below it the windows look at neighbouring buildings or at part of the sea; above it the Ocean Front rooms face the water directly, and the suites buy space before they buy a view.

Why this one

The view sets the rate here, not the floor area. On a Tuesday in early December 2026 the Superior Room was $739, the Deluxe $805 and the Partial Ocean View $991, and the Ocean View Room $1,229, though all four are about 450 sq ft (42 m²). The Superior and Deluxe look north or south over a residential view, and the two are described in nearly the same words, so what the extra $66 buys is not clear. The Partial Ocean View sees the sea in part, for $252 more than the entry room. The Ocean View Room is the first category sold with the Pacific in view, with two step-out balconies, a personal reading library and, in most, a hydrothermal massage tub, for $490 more than the Superior.

It is a pick with a condition. Ocean View rooms sit in both the Beach House and the taller Ocean House behind it, and the view may also take in the pool below or the three-storey Beach House as well as the water. Only the Ocean Front King rooms, on floors 1 to 3 of the Beach House, face the Pacific and the pier directly; they carried no rate that night, so ask what the step up costs for your dates. Above the rooms the suites buy space before a sea view: the Santa Monica Suite, at $1,834, has a residential view, and the Ocean View Suite, at $2,393, is the first suite sold with the Pacific.

Ask for
Ask for the Beach House: it holds the Ocean Front rooms, on floors 1 to 3 facing the water directly. Ocean View rooms sit in both it and the taller Ocean House behind, where the view can also take in the pool below or the roof of the three-storey Beach House, so in the Ocean House ask for a floor above that roofline. These are requests, not guarantees. Connecting rooms are available within a category, subject to availability, a twin rollaway is $50 a night and cribs are provided on request.
Avoid
The Superior and Deluxe rooms if the sea matters, since both have a residential view; the Partial Ocean View rooms, which see the water only in part; and, if you are placed in the Ocean House, a low floor, where the pool and the three-storey Beach House fill the foreground of the view. The Santa Monica Suite is the cheapest suite and has no sea view either.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are worth singling out for space. The Beach House Suite, about 1,300 sq ft (121 m²) on the third and top floor of the Beach House, has balconies, two fireplaces and a separate den with a full-size sofa bed, which suits a family. The Pacific View Suite, about 1,100 sq ft (102 m²) on the top floor of the Ocean House, has two balconies, two fireplaces and an oversized jetted bath, with room to dine or work. Neither had a rate that night, so ask the hotel what they cost for your dates.

Our verdict

Book Shutters on the Beach to sleep a few steps from the sand in Santa Monica, with the pier a short walk north. Pay the step to an Ocean View Room for the Pacific in view from your balcony, and budget for the resort fee and the valet.
