Why this one
The Superior Queen and the Deluxe King are close cousins: about 350 and 400 sq ft (33 and 37 m²), a separate bathroom, floor-to-ceiling windows and no side promised. The Deluxe King adds 50 sq ft and a king bed for $105 a night, which is a fair upgrade but not a different stay. The Studio Suite is one: about 550 sq ft (51 m²) against 350, with a separate living area as well as the bed, for $850 against $595 on a Tuesday in early December, or $255 a night more. That buys a sofa to sit on when you are not going out, in a hotel where the room matters as much as the city.
Above the Studio the ladder is about space. The Deluxe King Suite, about 700 sq ft (65 m²) and open plan, is only $90 more on that December Tuesday, and worth the step if your nights are cheap ones; on a Tuesday in late January the gap widens to $335, at $1,450 against $1,115, and the Studio is the better buy. The views follow the category, not the price: the hotel names the city and the hills for the Premier King, downtown for the upper-floor Premier Suite and the terraces of the Townhouse and Penthouse, and gives the rest panoramic windows with no side.
- Ask for
- Ask for a Studio Suite on the south side, where the city view is, and for one with a limestone bathroom, which only some have. The category promises neither, so ask when you book and again at check-in. Rollaway beds are $55 a night and cribs $35, plus tax, and no room takes more than four guests.
- Avoid
- The Superior Queen if you want room to sit, since it is the smallest room the hotel sells, about 350 sq ft (33 m²) with a queen bed. The Deluxe King, too, unless you want the king bed: it adds only about 50 sq ft for $105 and promises the same unnamed outlook. And do not book any entry category for the view, because none is tied to the south side.
Suites against rooms
Two suites are worth knowing about. The Premier Suite, about 800 sq ft (74 m²) on the upper floors, is a one-bedroom with a living room, a dining area and a limestone bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a stand-alone shower, and it is sold on the downtown skyline. The Townhouse Suite, about 1,750 sq ft (163 m²), is the other kind of splurge: a split-level apartment with 20-foot ceilings, a living and dining area with a powder room downstairs, a king bed and planted terraces looking south over Los Angeles.

Our verdict
Book it for the Tower Bar, the Art Deco tower and the city through the glass, and pay the step to a Studio Suite, asking for the south side, for room to enjoy it. Budget for the amenity fee and valet, and expect to drive to the beach.
