A spa stay in Madeira is mostly a Funchal stay. Three of these five are in the Hotel Zone, on the cliffs west of the centre, one is on the adults-only clifftop at Caniço de Baixo, 12 minutes from the airport, and one is about 500 metres up the hillside at São Gonçalo, among gardens and golf. The island suits it: Funchal's January afternoons average 20.0°C, and December is the wettest month, which is when a warm indoor pool earns its place.
Read the water before you book. Several of the sea-level pools are seawater, and The Cliff Bay keeps its saltwater pool at about 21°C, so a heated indoor pool matters, and every hotel here has one. Access rules differ too: the sauna area is in the stay at Sentido Galomar, Savoy Palace charges for its thermal circuit unless you book a long treatment, and the spas at Savoy Palace and VidaMar Resort Hotel Madeira are for over-16s. Choose by size, setting and company.
The Laurea Spa is a spa of real size: 3,100 m² with 13 treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room, a Jacuzzi, a halotherapy room, sensory showers, an ice fountain and its own heated indoor pool, open from 10:00 to 20:00. The World Spa Awards named it Portugal's best hotel spa in 2021, 2024, 2025 and 2026. The thermal areas cost €50 a day per guest and come free on any day you book a treatment of 60 minutes or more; they are for over-16s.
The water carries on outside the spa. A second heated indoor pool, on floor -1, is free to every guest from 07:00 to 20:00, and on the 17th floor the heated Galáxia Skypool, for adults only, hangs over Funchal Bay from 09:00 to 18:00. The Sé is 23 minutes away on foot, downhill.

Superior Ocean Room
about 41 m²€554 a night
A double bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a terrace over the ocean and the city for the slow hour between the spa and dinner.
The spa here is built around the sea rather than the size of the menu: eight treatment rooms, a spa suite, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a gym, with a heated indoor-outdoor pool beside it at about 27°C, and an indoor hot tub. In season a gazebo is set up for massages over the bay.
The rest of the day happens below the garden of old palms. At sea level there are a saltwater pool kept at about 21°C, an outdoor hot tub and a concrete jetty with ladders straight into the Atlantic when the sea allows. It suits a couple who want a treatment or two inside a week of sea swims and long breakfasts, with the hotel on its own promontory and the gardens between the rooms and the road.

Funchal Bay View
about 30 to 36 m²€499 a night
The balcony looks across the harbour to the city climbing its hills, which is the view you want after a massage.
This is the adults-only spa stay. The Ashoka spa has four treatment rooms, an infrared sauna, a steam bath and Finnish and bio saunas whose panoramic windows look straight out over the Atlantic. The sauna area is included in the stay; treatments are paid. The resort's Galo Active club adds a heated indoor pool of about 150 m² with a whirlpool, also included.
Between sessions, the clifftop seawater pool of about 100 m² is kept for adults, and the lifts run down the cliff to the Lido Galomar and steps into the Garajau marine reserve. The airport is 12 minutes away, so a short break loses little time to the transfer, and the building has 77 rooms, every one with a balcony or terrace.

Double Room Sea View Balcony
€261 a night
The cheapest room that looks straight out to sea, so the view from the sauna carries on from the balcony.
Palheiro Spa is the spa of a 37-room country house, and it feels like one: four treatment rooms using Thalgo products, a Finnish sauna, a Turkish steam bath, a fitness room and an indoor pool heated to 27 to 30°C with three Jacuzzi beds, open from 10:00 to 19:00. Yoga takes place in the garden pavilion, and the tiled garden pool of 17 by 8 metres waits on the lawn.
The setting is the rest of the treatment. The hotel stands about 500 metres up on the 150-hectare Palheiro estate, beside the Palheiro Gardens, with a nature trail through pine and native laurel, and the estate is wooded and quiet at night. The air is cooler up here than on the seafront, which is exactly when a pool at 27 to 30°C earns its keep.

The best things to do in Madeira, hand-picked
Hand-picked: only the best, one version of each, researched so you don’t have to.
Which Madeira spa hotels have a heated indoor pool?
All five on this list. Savoy Palace has two: the Laurea Spa's own heated pool and a free heated indoor pool on floor -1 for every guest. The Cliff Bay has a heated indoor-outdoor pool by the spa at about 27°C. Sentido Galomar's guests use a heated indoor pool of about 150 m² with a whirlpool at the resort's Galo Active club. Casa Velha do Palheiro's spa pool is heated to 27 to 30°C, with Jacuzzi beds, and VidaMar Resort Hotel Madeira's Aqua Area has a heated indoor pool free to all guests.
Is spa access included in the room rate?
It depends on the hotel. At Sentido Galomar the sauna area of the Ashoka spa is included, with treatments paid. At Savoy Palace the Laurea Spa's thermal areas cost €50 a day per guest, free on any day you book a treatment of 60 minutes or more. At VidaMar Resort Hotel Madeira the thalasso pool is €25 an entry, while the Aqua Area, with its heated pool, sauna and hot tub, is free. Massages and treatments are paid everywhere, so book the treatment and plan the day around it.
Can children use the spas?
The Laurea Spa at Savoy Palace and the Thalasso Sea Spa at VidaMar Resort Hotel Madeira are for guests aged 16 and over, and Sentido Galomar is an adults-only hotel. Families still have warm water: Savoy Palace's heated indoor pool on floor -1 is free to every guest, and VidaMar's Aqua Area has a heated indoor pool with a separate area for children. At VidaMar, Aquatica Kids World is free for ages 3 to 11 in season, so parents can take turns in the spa.
Can non-residents book a spa day in Madeira?
Yes, at two of these. Casa Velha do Palheiro's spa sells a day pass at €35, from 10:00 to 15:00, which includes the indoor pool heated to 27 to 30°C and the tiled outdoor pool on the lawn. The Laurea Spa at Savoy Palace admits visitors from outside the hotel to its thermal areas at €70 a day, with the sauna, steam room, halotherapy room and heated pool, for over-16s. Both are in Funchal or just above it.
Is Madeira warm enough for a spa break in winter?
Winter is a good time for it. In Funchal, January afternoons average 20.0°C and nights 14.3°C, and December is the wettest month, so the heated indoor pools on this list do much of the work. At The Cliff Bay the saltwater pool at sea level is kept at about 21°C and the heated pool by the spa at about 27°C, and Savoy Palace's rooftop Skypool is heated. Casa Velha do Palheiro, about 500 metres up, is cooler than the seafront, and its spa pool is heated to 27 to 30°C.
How did you choose these hotels?
Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
