Why this one
Below the suites, every room at The Cliff Bay except the 42 m² Family Rooms is 30 to 36 m², carpeted, with a balcony, a Nespresso machine and Rituals bath products. What changes up the ladder is the direction the balcony faces and the floor. The Standard, at €383 for two with breakfast on a June night, faces the drive and the entrance gardens. The Sea View, at €473, faces south or south-west over the open Atlantic. The Funchal Bay View, at €499, turns towards the bay: the harbour, the breakwater and the city rising behind it, with Reid's Palace on the next headland.
That €26 over the Sea View buys the view the hotel is built around, and it is the one to take. Above it, the Superior Upper Floors rooms are the same size again on the 6th floor and up, with fruit and wine on arrival and free soft drinks in the minibar; the Bay View version, at €553, is worth it only if height is the point, because it sees more of the city over the hotel towers to the east. The Junior Suite, at €573, adds 4 to 10 m² and the suite extras for €74 over the pick.
- Ask for
- The Funchal Bay View rooms are on the 1st to 5th floors, so ask for the 4th or 5th for the widest view over the harbour. If the room is for a special occasion, the Superior Upper Floors Funchal Bay View, on the 6th to 10th floors, is the same view from higher up.
- Avoid
- The Standard if the view is the point, since it faces the entrance gardens, and the Side Sea View, on the 1st to 3rd floors, whose partial view is over a balcony wall 1 m high. The Family Rooms and most Side Sea View rooms are reached by a ramp, which is worth knowing with a pushchair or a wheelchair.
Suites against rooms
Four suite categories sit above the rooms. The Junior Suite, about 40 m² with the bay view and one to a floor, was €573 for two with breakfast on the June night, and it is the sensible step up. The Executive Suite (68 m², south-west, one to a floor) and the Atlantic Suite (61 m², 8th floor, over the sea and the bay) are worth pricing on your dates. The Peninsula Suite on the 9th floor, 112 m² with a dining room, two bathrooms and large balconies over the city, is the top of the house.

Our verdict
The Funchal hotel for swimming in the Atlantic below the garden and looking at the bay from the balcony. Check availability for a Funchal Bay View room, and whether Il Gallo d'Oro has reopened for your dates.
