Why this one
The One Bedroom River Suite is where the two things this hotel does well meet: space and the view. The hotel describes it at 65 to 130 square metres, against 37 for either studio, with a king bed, a separate living room and a full kitchen, and it is one of the River categories, the only ones sold with the Douro and old Porto in the window. And it is not a duplex: in the one-bedroom duplexes the hotel puts the bed and bathroom upstairs. If it is two of you for two nights and you will be out all day, the River Studio gets the same view in a single room of 37 square metres.
The ladder is really two ladders side by side. Every size of suite up to the two-bedroom duplex comes in a plain version and a River version, and the plain ones carry no view at all in the hotel's descriptions; the three-bedroom duplex is the exception, sold with a garden view over Gaia. Terraces mostly run the other way: the plain Studio and most of the duplexes come with one, while the River Studio and three of the four River suites make it an add-on. The ranges are wide, 65 to 130 square metres in the pick alone, and the hotel warns that ceiling heights and window sizes vary from unit to unit, so the category is only half of what you are booking.
- Ask for
- Ask for a One Bedroom River Suite towards the top of its 65 to 130 square metre range, with a tall ceiling and a large window, which the hotel says vary from unit to unit. If you want to sit outside, add the terrace when you book and ask for its size and outlook in writing. Standard check-in is 15:00 and check-out 12:00, so ask ahead if you need an earlier arrival or a later departure.
- Avoid
- Avoid the plain Studio and One Bedroom Suite if the view is why you came, because the hotel attaches none to either. Avoid the one-bedroom duplexes with small children or unreliable knees, because the bed and bathroom are up a staircase. And do not assume a River rate comes with a terrace: for most River categories the terrace is an add-on.
Suites against rooms
For four, the two River categories are 90 and 92 square metres on the hotel's own figures and keep the view. The plain Two Bedroom Duplex Suite trades the view for an included terrace of 41 to 83 square metres and a floor area that runs from 90 to 170.
For six, the Three Bedroom Duplex Suite is 151 to 195 square metres over two levels, with three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a terrace of 49 to 59 square metres and a garden view over Gaia. It is the one suite in the building where the outdoor space, not the river, is the point.

Our verdict
The Gaia quay is where you see Porto best, and The Rebello gives you that view with a kitchen and a rooftop attached. It is the weekend hotel in this edit, and the value one in winter.
