Best family hotels in Porto

The Rebello Hotel & Spa, on the Gaia quay, is for space: a kitchen in every suite, duplexes for four or six and a kids' club. The Yeatman, up the hill, is the full hotel: walled gardens, a warm indoor pool all year, an outdoor one from April to October and a kids' club for ages 3 to 16.

What we looked for

Porto rewards children with a heritage tram, boats on the river and a bridge to walk across, and tests them with its hills: Praça da Ribeira to Avenida dos Aliados is a climb of about 75 metres by any route, and the Guindais funicular up from the river is closed for maintenance. Both hotels here are across the water in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the view of Porto is best and the tourist tax starts at 16 rather than Porto's 13, so children of 13 to 15 pay nothing. The sea is for walks more than swims: the Atlantic peaks at about 19 degrees in August.

Choose by how your family travels. The Rebello Hotel & Spa is down on the quay, 22 minutes' walk from Praça da Ribeira over the lower deck of the bridge, and it is the self-catering answer. The Yeatman is up the hill, nine minutes on foot from General Torres on Metro line D, and it is the full-hotel answer.

The Rebello Hotel & Spa

Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto

The Rebello Hotel & Spa gives a family what a hotel room cannot: space and a kitchen. All 103 studios and suites have a fully fitted one, and the larger suites sort out the sleeping. The Two Bedroom Suite has a bathroom for each bedroom and no stairs, the two-bedroom duplexes sleep four, and the Three Bedroom Duplex Suite sleeps six, with three bathrooms and a terrace of 49 to 59 m². With small children, skip the one-bedroom duplexes, where the bed and bathroom are upstairs.

There is a kids' club, Little Rebels, a multi-lingual nanny service, mini menus and welcome kits, and guests praise staff who go out of their way. There is no outdoor pool; the spa's semi-heated pool takes children from seven with an adult, booked ahead. The cable car up to the bridge is eight minutes along the quay, and M'arrecreo bakes pizza next door.

The Yeatman

Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto

The Yeatman is the family choice for anyone who wants a full hotel around them. It stands in walled grounds with more than one and a half hectares of gardens, where children can hunt for an olive tree over 1,350 years old. There is a kids' club for ages 3 to 16, unsupervised, so book babysitting in advance, and two pools: an indoor one kept at about 30 degrees and open from 08:00 to 20:00 all year, where children swim with an adult, and the decanter-shaped outdoor pool, with portholes to look through underwater, from April to October. The hotel's terms fit one child into a Superior Deluxe and two into a Suite Deluxe.

Meals are simple without a taxi: The Orangerie serves lunch and dinner every day, and the restaurants of the WOW district are a four or five-minute walk downhill. The two-star dining room is for 12 and over, so keep it for a babysitter night.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Porto & the Douro

Which hotels in Porto have a kids' club?

Two of our ten, and both are on this page. The Rebello Hotel & Spa runs Little Rebels, where children are looked after while their parents have dinner, and a multi-lingual nanny service. The Yeatman's kids' club, for ages 3 to 16, is unsupervised, and a babysitter can be booked ahead, which is worth doing for the night you want its two-star dining room, open to diners of 12 and over. In the Douro, Six Senses Douro Valley has no kids' club but offers babysitting on request.

Can children use the pools at Porto hotels?

At The Yeatman, yes: children swim in the indoor pool, kept at about 30 degrees, with an adult, from 08:00 to 20:00, and the outdoor infinity pool opens from April to October. The Rebello Hotel & Spa's semi-heated spa pool takes ages seven and over with an adult, booked ahead. Neither has a children's pool. Some of our other hotels are stricter: Vila Foz Hotel & Spa's only pool is for guests of 16 and over, Casa da Companhia's spa circuit, indoor pool included, is for over-16s, and at Six Senses Douro Valley under-12s may use the indoor pool from 08:30 to 14:00.

Which Porto hotel rooms sleep a family of four?

At The Rebello Hotel & Spa, the two-bedroom suites: the Two Bedroom Suite, 92 m² with a bathroom for each bedroom, the Two Bedroom River Suite, also 92 m² and with the river view, and the two-bedroom duplexes over two levels. The Three Bedroom Duplex Suite sleeps six. At The Yeatman, the hotel's terms allow two children in a Suite Deluxe, two plain Suites, Barbeito and Falua, take two adults and two children, and a Superior Deluxe can connect to a second room on request, subject to confirmation.

Do children pay the tourist tax in Porto?

Not in Porto until they are 13: the city charges 3 euros a person a night from that age, for up to seven nights, and children of 12 and under pay nothing. Vila Nova de Gaia, where both hotels on this page stand, charges the same 3 euros, also for up to seven nights, but only from the age of 16, which spares families with young teenagers. The Douro municipalities of Lamego, Sabrosa and Alijó list no overnight tax.

How hilly is Porto with children?

Steep enough to plan around. Praça da Ribeira to Avenida dos Aliados is a kilometre on foot with about 75 metres of climbing, and the Guindais funicular from the river is closed for maintenance. From the Gaia quay, the Teleférico de Gaia lifts you 67 metres to Jardim do Morro in about five minutes, beside the upper deck of the bridge and Metro line D; it runs from 10:00 to 20:00 from late April to late September, and until 18:00 from late October to late March. Otherwise, walk down and take a taxi back up.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
