Why this one

The standard rooms run from about 187 sq ft (17 m²) to 316 sq ft (29 m²), and the whole range sits within $14 a night on a December Tuesday: $258 for the queen, $265 for the king and the 2 Double Beds, $272 for the 2 Queen Beds. The king is the sensible standard room, with about 83 sq ft more than the queen for $7 and a sitting area. The Junior Suite, about 353 sq ft (33 m²), adds a living room and a double-basin vanity at $346.

The 1 Bedroom Suite is $360, $14 above the Junior Suite and $102 above the queen, and it is the step that changes the stay: about 443 sq ft (41 m²), a king bed, a living room and a glass-enclosed shower with a rainfall head, in a hotel where the standard rooms are small. The $35 nightly amenity fee is the same whichever room you choose, so the extra cost is only the difference in rate.

Ask for
Ask for a suite with the double-basin vanity: some of these suites have it and some do not, and every category varies a little from room to room. Late check-out until 1pm is offered free subject to availability, so ask when you arrive.
Avoid
The 1 Queen Bed room if you want a sitting area, which it is not listed with. The accessible rooms, which are fitted for guests with access needs and are larger on paper than the standard rooms they sit beside. And the Junior Suite, which costs $14 a night less for about 90 sq ft less.

Suites against rooms

The Figueroa Suite, about 519 sq ft (48 m²), is the one to consider if outdoor space matters: a parlour, a king bed and a large balcony with seating for two, high above Figueroa Street. The Casablanca, Casa and Parador suites are sold by phone, and the Casa and Parador are pitched at entertaining. The Casa has a dining table for six and a kitchenette, and the Parador adds a terrace over the pool that holds up to 30 guests, so it suits a group more than a quiet stay.

Our verdict

Book it for a restored 1926 hotel, a heated courtyard pool and L.A. Live on foot, and pay the step up to the 1 Bedroom Suite for space. Skip it if you want the sea within reach or a pool shallow enough for young children.
