What we looked for

Value in Los Angeles is as much about the address as the rate, because where you sleep decides how much of each day, and each bill, goes on a car. Our three have the lowest starting prices of our ten, from about $235 to $275 a night against $425 and up for the other seven. Each adds its own nightly fee, set out below, so compare the total for your dates rather than the headline rate.

Two things stretch the money further. Metro rail is $1.75 a ride, capped at $5 a day, and The Hollywood Roosevelt and Hotel Figueroa are four and nine minutes' walk from a station, so a car is optional at both, while The Garland's free trolley covers the run to Universal Studios Hollywood. And dates matter: early December and January, outside the event weeks, are the cheaper stretches.

The Hollywood Roosevelt

Hollywood, LA

The Hollywood Roosevelt has the lowest starting price of our ten, from about $235 a night, and it is no compromise: this is the 1927 tower where the first Academy Awards were presented, in the Blossom Room on 16 May 1929, with the TCL Chinese Theatre two minutes' walk across Hollywood Boulevard. Hotel guests swim free in the Tropicana, the heated pool whose floor David Hockney painted, where day-pass visitors pay from $56.

On top comes the hotel's own $37 nightly destination fee, tax included, which covers Wi-Fi, two bottled waters a day and morning coffee in the Tropicana Garden. Then leave the car out of it: Hollywood/Highland station is four minutes' walk, and the B Line reaches Universal City in four minutes and Downtown in 17, at $1.75 a ride, so the $79 valet is a choice, not a cost.

Hotel Figueroa

Downtown LA, LA

Hotel Figueroa, opened by the YWCA in 1926 and restored in Spanish Colonial style, starts at about $260 a night, and its standard rooms are priced close together, so the 1 King Bed, about 270 sq ft (25 m²) with a sitting area, costs little more than the 187 sq ft (17 m²) entry queen. The hotel's own $35 nightly amenity fee, plus tax, pays for things you will use: coffee at Bar Magnolia from 7am to 11am, a coffee maker in the room restocked daily, two boxed waters a day, the gym, museum discounts and the heated courtyard pool among tall candelabra euphorbias.

The address saves the rest. The Grammy Museum at L.A. Live is two minutes' walk, and 7th Street/Metro Center, where four Metro lines meet, is nine, so a car and its valet are easy to skip. Guests must be 21 to check in.

The Garland

Studio City, LA

The Garland, a 1972 family hotel on about seven acres in Studio City, from about $275 a night, is built for a Universal trip. Its free trolley runs to Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk on the hour from 8am to 10pm, skipping 1pm and 3pm, and picks up at CityWalk at a quarter past, so a park day needs no car. Each room comes with its own balcony, fridge and safe, and the pool, open from 6am to 10pm, screens dive-in movies every Friday and Saturday evening, and every night in summer.

On top come the hotel's own $37.20 hotel worker protection fee and its $1.75 environmental fee, per room per night, and self-parking from $50 plus tax. For a family of five, one Family Suite means one set of fees rather than two. Ask for a room away from the 101 freeway, which runs along one edge of the grounds.

Every room, and why

Price the Family Suite for your own dates against two smaller rooms, since both nightly fees are charged on every room.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Los Angeles

What goes on top of the rate at these three hotels?

Each hotel's own nightly fee, then room tax. The Hollywood Roosevelt adds a $37 destination fee, tax included; Hotel Figueroa a $35 amenity fee plus tax; and The Garland a $37.20 hotel worker protection fee and a $1.75 environmental fee. Plan on about 16% room tax at The Hollywood Roosevelt and Hotel Figueroa, the city's 14% plus a 2% tourism assessment, and 16.25% at The Garland. A car adds $79 a night in valet at The Hollywood Roosevelt and from $50 plus tax to self-park at The Garland. Hotels must show a total price that includes mandatory fees, so compare totals.

When is the cheapest time to stay in Los Angeles?

Early December and January, outside the event weeks. The Garland is at its cheapest then, from about $275, with July and August about 30 per cent higher and the week between Christmas and New Year about 45 per cent. At The Hollywood Roosevelt rates are lowest in November and December and climb through awards season, which runs from the Golden Globes on 10 January 2027 to the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre on 14 March. Downtown, rates at Hotel Figueroa rise on big event nights at Crypto.com Arena, such as the Grammys on 7 February 2027.

What is the hotel worker protection fee at The Garland?

It is The Garland's own nightly charge of $37.20 on every room, not a tax. The hotel ties it to the City of Los Angeles's hotel worker minimum wage, which rose on 1 July 2026 to $25 an hour plus $4.25 for health care at hotels of 60 rooms or more, and added the fee then. With its $1.75 environmental fee, which the hotel puts towards sustainability projects, the two come to $38.95 a night, whether or not you bring a car.

Can you save money in LA without a car?

Yes, if the base is on the Metro. A ride is $1.75 with free transfers for two hours, capped at $5 a day and $18 over seven days, paid by tapping a contactless card or phone. Hotel Figueroa is nine minutes' walk from 7th Street/Metro Center, where the A, B, D and E Lines meet, and The Hollywood Roosevelt four from Hollywood/Highland on the B Line, so you can skip its $79 valet. The Garland's free trolley covers Universal Studios Hollywood and will drop you at Universal City station if you ask. Beyond the rail lines, most of Los Angeles is a drive.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
