Candlelight: Tribute to Juan Gabriel on Strings

Church of the Heavenly Rest, Upper East Side

4.8/5

About 75 reviews on Fever

Twelve Juan Gabriel songs, from Querida to Amor Eterno, played by a string quartet by candlelight at the Church of the Heavenly Rest on Fifth Avenue. Three evenings, 13 November to 11 December 2026, from 34.02 dollars with fees.

Juan Gabriel (1950 to 2016), El Divo de Juárez, wrote around 1,800 songs, Wikipedia says, and this programme keeps to the ones he is best known for. Querida held number one in Mexico for a year in 1984; Amor Eterno was chosen by the Library of Congress for the National Recording Registry in 2024; El Noa Noa is named after the Ciudad Juárez bar where he sang as a teenager. Así Fue, Abrázame Muy Fuerte, Pero Qué Necesidad, No Tengo Dinero and Siempre en Mi Mente complete a set of twelve. The show holds 4.8 from 75 reviews on Fever on 29 October 2026.

The concert is instrumental, as the name on Strings suggests: Fever names only the Highline String Quartet, with no singer, so the melodies go to the violins and the words stay with the audience. That suits his music, which was written for big arrangements, from mariachi to orchestra; in 1990 he became the first non-classical act to play the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, according to Wikipedia. The evening is pitched at people who grew up with these songs in Spanish, and since nothing is sung, no Spanish is needed to follow it. Fever says it is a tribute, not linked to or endorsed by the artist or his heirs.

The Church of the Heavenly Rest is a 1929 neo-Gothic church on Fifth Avenue at 90th Street, four minutes by taxi from The Carlyle. The cheapest seat is the balcony on 3 December, 34.02 dollars, with a view over all the candles. Fever also sells a separate Juan Gabriel on Strings night at the Paradise Theater in the Bronx on 16 January 2027, from 56.16 dollars.
