Which room to book at The Vintage House Hotel

The Junior Suite Douro River View. Every category has a balcony or terrace, so the step up from the 35 m² Classic does not buy the view; it buys 42 m², a sitting area and room for two extra beds, for 40 euros more on the hotel's own from prices.

Why this one

The Classic already has the thing you came for: 35 m², a balcony or terrace and the river in front of it. The Junior Suite adds seven square metres and a living room area, takes two extra beds where the Classic takes one, and the step is from 235 euros to 275, VAT included. In a valley where Portugal's weather service has recorded 47.0 °C, and where guests report air conditioning that struggles in July and August, a sitting area away from the bed is where the afternoon goes.

The ladder is short. The 36 rooms are sold under two names at the same 35 m², the Standard and the Classic with a View, and the difference that matters in print is what the balcony looks at. Eleven suites sit above them: the Junior at 42 m², two Deluxe Suites at 48 m² with a separate lounge, from 335 euros, and four Master Suites of 74 to 82 m² with dining tables and walk-in closets, from 415. The jump from Junior to Deluxe is 60 euros for six square metres and a proper lounge; the Master is where the floor area doubles on the Classic's.

Ask for
Ask for a bath if you want one: the Classic and Junior Suite pages promise a bathtub or a shower, while the Standard, Deluxe and Master pages list both. A family of four needs a Junior or Master Suite, which take two extra beds, or connecting rooms, which the hotel lists for every category except the Master Suite. In a Master Suite, ask for one of the two with the original granite fireplaces.
Avoid
The Standard Room if the river is why you came: its own page lists a balcony with a river or a land view, at the same from price as the Classic that promises the river. And the Deluxe Suite if a child is coming: the rooms page lists it for two adults and its own page offers no extra bed or cot, so ask before you book it for three.

Suites against rooms

Above the Junior Suite there are six suites, in two kinds. The two Deluxe Suites, 48 m², add a separate lounge, a bath and a shower and a welcome in the room, from 335 euros, but the rooms page lists them for two adults only. The four Master Suites, 74 to 82 m², are each decorated in their own colours, with a lounge, a dining table and a walk-in closet, from 415 euros; two keep original granite fireplaces, which the hotel describes as decorative.

Our verdict

For a first Douro stay with the river in front of you and no driving, this is the sensible classic. Take the train, book a balcony you will actually sit on and keep expectations on the fittings realistic.
