Quiet in Porto comes down to distance from two places. The Ribeira quay is busy from lunch until late, and a river-facing room there gets the noise with the view. The Baixa holds the nightlife streets the city regulates, 26 streets and squares, mostly north of Clérigos, where the largest bars with a dance floor may open until 4am. On 23 June, São João fills Aliados and both riverfronts, with fireworks at 23:59.
So the quiet addresses sit beyond the centre. Vila Foz Hotel & Spa is on the Atlantic front at Foz, a residential district that is calm at night, half an hour from the old town on the 500 bus. The other three are in the Douro valley, well over an hour's drive from all of it, where the evening is dinner and the river. Choose Foz for Porto by day and quiet by night; choose the valley if the quiet is the holiday, and give it two nights.
Quinta Nova Winery House has 11 rooms on a 120-hectare working wine estate at Covas do Douro, on the north bank between Régua and Pinhão. Every door you can walk to belongs to the estate, and the nearest restaurants that are not its own are a 25-minute drive, so the evening stays here: a drink at the Aeternus bar, dinner at Terraçu's above the vineyards, then nothing but the valley.
The days are just as unhurried. Three marked routes run for eight kilometres across the estate, the 1764 winery is on the doorstep, and a small pool sits by the vines. Nor do you need to drive the valley roads to get here: the estate collects guests free from Ferrão station or its pier at check-in and check-out.

Foz do Douro is where the river meets the Atlantic: a residential district of promenades and seaside terraces, and calm at night. The evening can stay in the building. The starred dining room serves dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, and Flor de Lis is open every day until 10.30pm with a terrace over the sea. The distance is what buys the calm: the old town is half an hour away on the 500 bus, which leaves São Bento for the last time at midnight.

Nothing beyond the estate is within walking distance, and the closest outside table is a six-minute drive, so the evenings are spent in: dinner at Vale de Abraão, a self-poured glass in the Wine Library, the Quinta Bar until midnight.
The spa is where the afternoons go, with ten treatment rooms and a heated indoor pool with underwater sound therapy. Under-12s may swim there only from 08:30 to 14:00, and the rest of the spa is for 14 and over. Winter here is misty and still, and it is when the rates are at their lowest.
