The Vintage House is the Douro's original hotel. The building was a 19th-century house and wine store for Taylor's, it opened as the valley's first proper hotel in 1998, and the Fladgate Partnership, owners of The Yeatman in Gaia, bought it back in 2015. Today it is 36 rooms and 11 suites across three buildings on the riverbank at Pinhão, at Lugar da Ponte, wedged between the N323 and the Douro beside the road bridge, a few hundred metres from where the Pinhão river runs into it.
Every category comes with a balcony or terrace, and from the Classic room up each faces the river, which in the Douro is what you pay for; the Standard Room's own page allows for river or land views, so ask when you book. Inside, the register is country house rather than design hotel, all dark wood and fabrics chosen to last. The Library Bar is the sitting room, with a fireplace, books, board games and a terrace looking up at the vineyard terraces, and it runs from eleven in the morning to midnight. Outside there is a garden with a seasonal pool and its own bar, a tennis court and a wine shop.
The position does most of the work. Pinhão station is eight minutes' walk away, so the Linha do Douro brings you from Porto Campanhã in about 2h20 with no car at either end, the river boats leave from the quay in front, and Quinta do Bomfim is a short walk. Rabelo is the restaurant, with a terrace over the water and Milton Ferreira cooking regional Douro food, lunch from half past twelve and dinner from half past seven. From July to September there is an outdoor Douro barbecue on the last Thursday of the month.
Guests keep praising the balconies, the beds and the breakfast room. The consistent gripe is wear: this is a country house hotel with a classic look, and at the rate some rooms show their age, with a steady thread of feedback about tired fittings and air conditioning that struggles in July and August heat. Rabelo is priced at the top of the valley, feedback on portions and consistency is mixed, and Pinhão has few alternatives after dark. The pool closes from November to March and there is no spa, so a winter stay is about the fireplace and the river view. It suits a first trip to the Douro, made by train, by someone who would rather sit on a balcony for three days than drive between quintas.
