The catch at Orient Express La Minerva

Four things stand between the photograph and the stay. None is a secret, and none is a reason not to book it for the address and the roof, but each has caught out someone expecting the Pantheon in the window for the price of a Classic.

On our shortlists

  1. The Pantheon is promised from the Stendhal Suite up, at three times a Classic

The hotel's descriptions of its fourteen categories name the Pantheon or Piazza della Minerva in five: the Stendhal Suite, the Grand Suite with View and the La Minerva, Obelisco and Orient Express Suites. The Deluxe description says only that some overlook the square; none is sold that way. The Junior Suite with View, the first category sold with an outlook, promises views over Rome, and Rome is a big place. Ignore the inclusions block repeated word for word on nine of the ten suite pages, down to the 48 square metre Junior Suite, Pantheon view included; no rate below the Signature Suites includes any of it.

For 9 to 11 February 2027, the Classic was 1,105 euros a night, the Deluxe 1,377, the Junior Suite with View 2,057 and the Stendhal Suite 3,400: Book early rates, prepaid and non-refundable, with breakfast, before city tax. The cheapest window the hotel says faces the Pantheon costs three times the entry rate.

What to do. Book the Stendhal Suite if the Pantheon in the window is the point, the Junior Suite with View if any view is, a Classic if the roof will do. Do not pay for a Deluxe hoping to be one of the some.

  2. Nothing below the 63 square metre Suite sleeps three people

Every category below the Suite, from the 25 square metre Classic to the Junior Suite with Terrace, is capped at two guests, and the hotel's room pages spell it out: two adults, or one adult and one child. The first category that sleeps three is the 63 square metre Suite, 2,465 euros a night for 9 to 11 February 2027 and 3,315 for 20 to 22 April, against 1,105 and 1,402.50 for a Classic.

The entry rooms are small for the money as well: 25 square metres at 1,105 euros is about 44 euros a square metre a night. Guests give the rooms, service, cleanliness and location top marks, and value only a shade less.

What to do. Three people means the Suite or nothing, so price the whole stay first. Two who want floor space rather than a window should look at the 35 square metre Deluxe, 272 euros above a Classic.

  3. No pool, and the spa is 210 square metres of booked rituals, open 9.00 to 20.00

The hotel's site does not mention a pool anywhere, and its FAQ describes the spa as an underground wellness space of 210 square metres with hammams and Turkish baths. It opened in February 2026, ten months after the hotel, so anything written about a stay before then describes a building without one. The spa page gives hours of 9.00 to 20.00 and sells hammam rituals, a summer Charme d'Orient detox ritual and Furtuna Skin facials, all of them booked treatments; nothing on that page, the FAQ or the rate descriptions gives a room guest free use of the baths. The only bundle the hotel sells is the Signature Suite Rate, from 8,000 euros a night, which includes a spa treatment for two; the 60-minute treatment for two listed in a block repeated on nine of the ten suite pages is priced into no rate below that. A gym and a Kinesis room sit on the first floor, without published hours.

What to do. Book a hammam ritual before you arrive if the spa is part of the plan, and budget for it on top of the room. If a pool is part of the plan, this is the wrong hotel.

  4. The roof is a public restaurant with a door policy, and the third restaurant has not opened

Gigi Rigolatto Roma has the seventh floor, and Paris Society and RIKAS run Gigi, not the hotel. Its own site gives lunch 12.30 to 14.30, aperitivo 17.00 to 19.00 and dinner 19.00 to 22.30 every day, and offers the whole rooftop for exclusive private use. Neither site publishes a dress code, yet guests report men in shorts refused at the door, and the hotel's reply to one such review promises better communication about the rooftop dress code. Downstairs, in a speakeasy the hotel does not publicise, guests report live music starting hours after staff said it would.

Accor's opening release of April 2025 promised a third restaurant, Mimi Kakushi, a 1920s Osaka concept from the group behind Gigi, later that year. It is still not on the hotel's restaurants page, the FAQ counts two dining addresses, and Mimi Kakushi's own site lists Dubai, Miami and Paros.

What to do. Reserve Gigi's sunset sitting when you book the room, ask the hotel in writing what the roof admits, and pack long trousers. If the roof is closed for an event, La Minerva Bar is the fallback.

Who should skip it

Anyone travelling as three, because nothing below the Suite takes them and the Suite was 2,465 euros a night in February; anyone whose Rome includes a pool or a long spa afternoon; and anyone booking a Classic, Superior or Deluxe for the Pantheon, because the hotel promises the dome only from the Stendhal Suite up.

Who should book it anyway

Couples who want the address more than the window: a 1620 palazzo on its own island site behind the Pantheon, Hugo Toro's rooms, breakfast in the rate and a seventh-floor terrace with the dome in the foreground. Book a Junior Suite with View or higher, and everything above is a trade you have already made.

Our verdict

Book it for the address and the roof: a 1620 palazzo behind the Pantheon, restored rather than flattened, with a terrace that frames the dome. Pay for a view category with your eyes open, because below the suites the only rooms the hotel says face the Pantheon are some of the Deluxe Rooms, and none of those is guaranteed. Eat downstairs at least once.
