What we looked for

In Rome the views worth paying for are close ones. The Colosseum stands about 190 metres from Palazzo Manfredi, the Pantheon's dome about a hundred from Orient Express La Minerva, and the Fountain of the Four Rivers 60 from Eitch Borromini Palazzo Pamphilj. Close means a monument at its own scale rather than a panorama: from Palazzo Manfredi's roof your eye meets the Colosseum around its second order of arcades, and at La Minerva the dome rises above the seventh-floor terrace.

In all three the view from bed belongs to particular room categories, so it is something you book, not a floor you hope for. Each hotel also has a terrace at the top that every guest can use, whatever the room: two serve breakfast up there, and La Minerva's is a restaurant and bar. Choose by the monument, ancient Rome, the Pantheon or Piazza Navona, then decide whether you want to wake up to it or eat in front of it.

Palazzo Manfredi

Colle Oppio, Rome

Palazzo Manfredi's west wall borders the excavated Ludus Magnus, the gladiators' training ground, and the first arches of the Colosseum rise about 190 metres past it. Of the palazzo's three room categories, only the Master Room looks at the amphitheatre and the Ludus Magnus, from the second and third floors, and its shower looks at them too.

Every guest gets the roof. Breakfast is served on the Aroma terrace whatever the rate, four levels up on ground that already stands some eight metres above the Colosseum's, so your eye meets the second order of arcades and you look up at the attic. The Domus Aurea lies to the right and St Peter's dome far beyond, and because the terrace is glazed and roofed over in winter, the view works in January as well as June. At dusk, as the floodlights come up, The Court below has the Colosseum on its open side.

Orient Express La Minerva

Pigna, Rome

The hotel fills its own island site on Piazza della Minerva, behind the Pantheon, and its view is the dome itself, about a hundred metres off across the terracotta roofs. Expect scale rather than a bird's-eye view: the dome is 43 metres to its crown and rises above the seventh-floor terrace, so you look across and up at it, with the Vittoriano and St Peter's on the skyline beyond.

On a smaller budget the view still comes with every room. The terrace is Gigi Rigolatto Roma, open to every guest for lunch, aperitivo and dinner, with a bar that takes walk-ins until 11.30pm and a glazed room for bad weather. For the dome from your own window, book by category: the hotel names the Pantheon in five suite categories, from the Stendhal Suite up, and the Obelisco Suite adds Bernini's elephant. Some Deluxe Rooms overlook the square too, though which room you get is the hotel's choice.

Eitch Borromini Palazzo Pamphilj

Piazza Navona, Rome

The hotel is inside the Collegio Innocenziano on Piazza Navona, and its view is the square from above. Breakfast, cooked to order and included, is served from 7am in Terrazza Borromini on the fourth floor, whose frescoed rooms look down on Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers; the outdoor terrace sits beside the dome and bell tower of Sant'Agnese in Agone. One floor up, La Grande Bellezza has Piazza Navona below, the dome of St Peter's to the west and the Pantheon to the east.

Most rooms look onto the cloister or the side lanes, so a view from bed is a category you choose. Each Deluxe Suite with View, under original coffered ceilings, has its own outlook over domes, rooftops, bell towers or the square. The 82 square metre Suite Luxury with view, a former chapel with frescoed ceilings, overlooks Piazza Navona itself.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Rome

Which Rome hotel rooms look at the Colosseum?

At Palazzo Manfredi, on Via Labicana, the Master Room is the one room category that faces the Colosseum and the Ludus Magnus, on the second and third floors, with a shower that looks at them. Several suites face it too: the Colosseo Suite, the Family Suite, whose two showers both look at the amphitheatre, and the Grand View Suite Colosseo, the only category with a bath facing it. The Prestige faces the inner courtyard and the Executive the Colle Oppio park, and every guest has the view at breakfast on the roof.

Is there a hotel with a view of the Pantheon?

Orient Express La Minerva, on Piazza della Minerva behind the Pantheon. Its seventh-floor terrace, the restaurant Gigi Rigolatto Roma, is open to every guest and has the dome in the foreground about a hundred metres away, with the Vittoriano and St Peter's beyond. For the dome from a room, the hotel names it in five suite categories: the Stendhal Suite, the Grand Suite with View, and the La Minerva, Obelisco and Orient Express Suites, the Obelisco with Bernini's elephant in the window too. Some Deluxe Rooms overlook the square, though the hotel allocates them.

Which hotel overlooks Piazza Navona?

Eitch Borromini Palazzo Pamphilj, in the Collegio Innocenziano, the building Borromini began on the square in 1654. Its fourth-floor restaurant, where breakfast is served, looks down on the Fountain of the Four Rivers, and the fifth-floor bar, La Grande Bellezza, has the square below with St Peter's to the west and the Pantheon to the east. Most rooms face the cloister or the lanes, so book the Suite Luxury with view for the square, or the Deluxe Suite with View and ask for the piazza side.

Do you need a room with a view to see the view?

No. At Palazzo Manfredi every guest has breakfast on the Aroma terrace with the Colosseum in front, whatever the room. At Orient Express La Minerva the seventh-floor terrace, Gigi Rigolatto Roma, is open to every guest for lunch, aperitivo and dinner, and its bar takes walk-ins until 11.30pm, so the Pantheon's dome comes with a Classic Room too. At Eitch Borromini Palazzo Pamphilj breakfast is served in the fourth-floor rooms above the Fountain of the Four Rivers. A view category buys the monument from your bed: the Master Room, the Stendhal Suite or the Deluxe Suite with View.

Can you visit these rooftops without staying?

Yes, with a booking. Aroma, the starred restaurant on Palazzo Manfredi's roof, takes reservations through its own form, and The Court below it, open from 6pm with the Colosseum on its open side, needs a reservation and a minimum of two cocktails a head. Gigi Rigolatto Roma on the seventh floor of Orient Express La Minerva serves lunch, aperitivo and dinner, and its bar takes walk-ins until 11.30pm. At Eitch Borromini Palazzo Pamphilj, the terrace restaurant and La Grande Bellezza book by phone or email through their own desk.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
