Teide at sunset: stargazing or the Mustang?

Both put you on the slopes of Teide as the sun goes down, and both offer pickup on the south coast. The stargazing tour, from 35 euros, watches the sunset from 1,424 metres with La Gomera on the horizon, then turns to the stars through a 12-inch telescope. The Mustang tour, from 125 euros, puts you at the wheel of a Ford Mustang convertible in a convoy into Teide National Park, for sunset at about 2,100 metres.

Which one for you

Sunset and stargazing above the clouds

Book the stargazing tour if the night sky is the point, you want the cheaper evening, or you are travelling with older children who can stay up late. Take more layers than you think: it is cold up there even in August.

Teide at sunset, driving a Mustang convertible

Book the Mustang tour if the drive is the point, you have a confident driver with the right licence, and you are three or four sharing a car. It is the one for a celebration, not for the stars.

The verdict

Same mountain, same sunset, two different evenings: the stargazing tour for the sky, at well under a third of the price, and the Mustang for the drive. Both are cold after dark, so whichever you book, bring a warm layer.
