The evening starts in Costa Adeje, at a sign reading Mustang Pirati Tenerife, or with a hotel pickup, which the listing offers and a reseller of the same tour limits to hotels between La Caleta and Los Cristianos. From there a convoy of up to eight Ford Mustang convertibles, up to four people to a car, climbs into Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. The climb goes from pine forest to lava fields and into the caldera itself, on public roads that need no permit, unlike the path to Teide's 3,715 metre summit.

The operator, Pirati Tenerife Excursion, puts the sunset at Cañada Blanca, the plain at the foot of Teide beside the Parador, at about 2,100 metres; the GetYourGuide listing names the stop after Pico Viejo, Teide's neighbouring volcano. On the way up, the road passes Los Azulejos, where hot volcanic fluids have stained the rock green and blue. One person drives each car and the others ride; the operator says guests without a licence can still come, with one of its guides at the wheel. The guides lead the convoy, choose the stops and take photographs. The outing lasts about three hours and ends after dark.

The operator says snacks and drinks are included, and the listing adds an aperitif. Jackets are not, so the open car is colder than the day suggests once the sun has gone. The driver needs a class B licence held for at least a year, closed shoes are compulsory, and nobody who has dived in the previous 24 hours may take part, because of the altitude. GetYourGuide's title mentions a quad, but the operator sells its quad tour separately, from Vilaflor; this booking is the Mustang.

Why this one

On GetYourGuide this was the only Mustang convertible tour to Teide, rated 4.9 from about 140 reviews, from 125 euros. Its nearest rival is a self-drive Jeep Wrangler convoy from Costa Adeje, rated 4.9 from 95 reviews, from 55.80 euros for about four hours, which climbs to 2,300 metres on tracks as well as roads, with a manual gearbox. Book the Mustang for the open car and the tarmac; book the Jeep for less than half the price and a longer, rougher route.

If the point of the evening is the sky rather than the car, our sunset and stargazing evening is the better choice: 35 euros, a viewpoint at 1,424 metres and a telescope after dark, with nobody driving. For the summit in daylight, the cable car tour is the one.

Good for

  • Confident drivers who want to be at the wheel, not in a coach
  • Groups of three or four happy to share a car
  • Anyone staying on the Costa Adeje coast, for the pickup

Not for

  • Groups without a driver who clearly meets the licence rules
  • Anyone who wants the night sky more than the drive
  • Guests in the north, over an hour from the meeting point

When to go

What the sunset stop is like, month by month. Sunset time, temperature, wind and cloud are calculated for the TF-21 at Cañada Blanca, at about 2,100 metres, at the moment of sunset each day.

Temperature is the median at the moment of sunset, with the coldest evening in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of evenings with little cloud above the viewpoint at sunset; gusty, the share with gusts over 50 km/h.

When the park's roads close

Snow and ice close the roads into the park, not just the view: on 22 December 2024 the Cabildo de Tenerife closed the TF-21, TF-24 and TF-38 for ice and snow on the carriageway. In winter, check that the tour is running before you set off.

From our Tenerife hotels

Drive times are routed to the Mustang Pirati Tenerife sign in Costa Adeje, where the convoy sets off. The listing offers hotel pickup, and a reseller of the same tour limits it to hotels between La Caleta and Los Cristianos; from anywhere else, drive or take a taxi to the meeting point.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Guides choose roads that nervous drivers can handle, and first-time Mustang drivers settle in fast
  • The sunset and the setting get the strongest praise
  • Pickups and the convoy run smoothly, with clear messages beforehand
  • The guides add to the evening rather than just leading it

Complaints

  • The guides' photographs are sold separately, about 30 euros in one guest's account

The catch

  1. The age rules do not agree

GetYourGuide's listing says in one place that drivers under 18 cannot take part, and in another that nobody under 20, or with a licence held for less than a year, may drive. A reseller of the same tour gives 21. The operator's own page asks only for a valid licence.

What to do. If anyone who wants to drive is under 21, confirm the rule with the operator by WhatsApp or phone before you book.

  2. The title says quad; the booking is the Mustang

Pirati Tenerife Excursion runs two sunset tours: this one, in Mustangs from Costa Adeje, and a separate quad bike tour from Vilaflor. GetYourGuide's title for this listing mentions both, but the meeting point and every description we read are for the Mustang.

What to do. For the quads, book the operator's quad tour from Vilaflor; book this one for the car.

  3. An open car at 2,100 metres after sunset

In the five years of weather we looked at, the median temperature at the sunset stop, at the moment of sunset, is about 6 to 7°C from December to April and 19 to 20°C in July and August. The drive back down is in the dark, in an open car, with the wind of the road on top.

What to do. Bring a warm jacket, whatever the month; add gloves and a hat from October to April.

  4. Photos cost extra

The guides photograph the convoy along the way, but the listing does not make clear that the pictures are included, and one guest account mentions paying about 30 euros for them.

What to do. Ask the price before the tour if you want the photos, or take your own.

  5. Snow and cloud are the weather risks

From the viewpoint, the sky at sunset was clear on about seven or eight evenings in ten for most of the year in the weather we looked at, and on about six in ten in October and November. Snow and ice close the park's roads altogether: the Cabildo de Tenerife closed the TF-21, TF-24 and TF-38 on 22 December 2024. We found no published policy for cloudy evenings.

What to do. Watch the forecast in the days before, and cancel or move the booking if it looks wintry or cloudy.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Teide at sunset, driving a Mustang convertible

Is the Teide Mustang sunset tour worth it?

If the drive is the point, yes: 125 euros buys the wheel of a Ford Mustang convertible through Teide National Park to a sunset stop at about 2,100 metres, rated 4.9 from about 140 reviews. For the stars or the summit, our stargazing evening and cable car tour are better answers.

Does the Mustang tour go to the top of Teide?

No. The sunset stop is at Cañada Blanca, at about 2,100 metres, well below the 3,715 metre summit, which needs a permit and a cable car or a long climb.

What licence do I need to drive the Mustang?

A class B car licence held for at least a year. The minimum age is given as 18, 20 or 21 depending on the source, so confirm it with the operator if any driver is under 21.

Can I join without driving?

Yes. Up to four people share each car and only one drives; the operator says guests without a licence can come with one of its guides driving.

Is there a quad bike option?

Not on this booking. The operator runs a separate quad bike sunset tour from Vilaflor; this one is the Mustang from Costa Adeje.

How cold is it at the Teide sunset stop?

At sunset at about 2,100 metres, the median is about 6 to 7°C from December to April and 19 to 20°C in July and August, and the drive back down is after dark in an open car.

What happens if the roads close for snow?

The Cabildo de Tenerife closes the park's roads for snow and ice, as it did on 22 December 2024. Check with the operator on winter days before you set off.
