Volcano Teide, the company that has run the Teide cable car since 1971, sells this day itself: a coach with a guide, the return ride and an audio guide. The coach collects from Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava in the north, from the resorts of the south and west coasts between El Médano and Los Gigantes, and from Santa Cruz and Candelaria, then climbs into Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.

At the base station, at 2,356 metres, the group boards for the eight minute ride to La Rambleta, at 3,555 metres. Two short paths from the upper station need no permit: one to the Mirador de la Fortaleza, looking north over the sea of cloud, the other to the Pico Viejo viewpoint, over the 800 metre crater of Teide's neighbouring volcano. The summit, 3,715 metres by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional's measure (3,718 on older signs and on this listing), is another 160 metres up the Telesforo Bravo path, and needs a permit this tour does not arrange.

The ticket includes the Teide Legend audio guide for the paths at the top and entry to the Science and Legend exhibition at the base station, which sets the Guanche story of the volcano beside its geology. The operator puts the day at about seven hours. Luggage and large bags are not allowed on the coach, and the cable car turns away anyone in heels, wedges, platforms, flat soles, beach shoes or open shoes.

Why this one

There is one Teide cable car, and Volcano Teide runs it, so the choice is how to buy the ride. This tour cost 92 euros on GetYourGuide and the same on volcanoteide.com, and was rated 4.3 from about 6,100 reviews. With a hire car, the cable car ticket alone is 42 euros direct, or 45.50 euros with the audio guide, and you drive the mountain road and find a space in the park's small car parks yourself. Without a car, this tour is the simple answer.

Two of our other Teide pages suit different evenings: the sunset and stargazing tour, from 35 euros, is for the sky and does not use the cable car, and the Mustang convertible drive, from 125 euros, is for people who would rather be at the wheel. Volcano Teide's own sunset and stars evening, from 182 euros for about eight hours, takes the cable car at dusk and ends with telescopes at the base station.

Good for

  • A first daytime look at Teide with someone else driving
  • Travellers without a hire car who want the cable car
  • Anyone who likes a guide and an audio guide with the ride

Not for

  • Anyone set on the summit without a permit booked
  • Drivers happy to buy the 42 euro ticket and park themselves
  • Pregnant women, children under 3, anyone with heart or breathing conditions

Temperature is the median at 12:00 at La Rambleta, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud above the upper station at 12:00; gusty, the share with gusts over 50 km/h in the model, a guide to how often the wind is strong up there, not a record of closures.

Gusty is not the closure rate

Volcano Teide closes the cable car when the wind at the top passes its own limit, which it does not publish. The gusty column shows how often the weather model has strong gusts at the upper station at midday: most often from November to March, about one day in three, and least in August. It is a guide to the odds, not a count of closed days.

From our Tenerife hotels

Drive times are routed to the cable car's base station car park, at 2,356 metres. The operator's coach collects from Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava, from the south and west coasts between El Médano and Los Gigantes, including our Costa Adeje and Guía de Isora hotels, and from Santa Cruz and Candelaria. Elsewhere in the north, the operator uses a pickup point at the La Cúpula shopping centre instead of hotels.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Not having to drive or park in the national park is the convenience guests mention most
  • The ride and the view from La Rambleta over the crater and the sea of cloud are what guests say they came for
  • Guides keep a long pickup loop roughly on time
  • The exhibition and the audio guide add context guests say they would otherwise have missed

Complaints

  • A wind closure, with only the cable car refunded, is the most common complaint; some booked the tour for the ride alone

The catch

  1. Wind can close the cable car, and the tour still runs

Volcano Teide stops the cable car when the wind at the top is too strong, and does not publish its limit. When that happens, the listing says, the tour goes ahead by another route and only the cable car is refunded, 43 euros for a non-resident adult under the operator's terms. The day's high point is then the base station at 2,356 metres.

What to do. Book early in your stay, so a closed day leaves time for another try, and treat the ride as the part of the day that is not guaranteed.

  2. The summit needs a permit, and it now costs money

La Rambleta is as high as the cable car goes. Since 19 January 2026 the Cabildo has charged for the permit to walk the last stretch to the 3,715 metre summit: 15 euros for visitors from outside the Canaries, 6 euros for residents of the other islands, free for Tenerife residents and under 14s, booked on Tenerife ON. Places are capped and sell out.

What to do. If standing on the summit matters, book the permit yourself, as soon as your dates are fixed.

  3. Seven hours is the tour, not your day

The operator's seven hours runs from the first pickup to the last drop-off. In one detailed review, more than three hours of an eight and a half hour day went on collecting and dropping off guests across the south, with about two hours at the cable car.

What to do. If you have a car and do not mind mountain roads, the 42 euro ticket gives you the day back; otherwise, book it and bring a book.

  4. The commentary switches languages

The guide narrates in turn in the coach's languages, often Spanish, English and German on the same trip, which some reviewers found slow going; one was given a guide who did not speak the language booked. The listing says the French-speaking tour does not run on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Sundays.

What to do. Use the Teide Legend audio guide at the top, which comes in your own language.

  5. It is cold at 3,555 metres

At midday at La Rambleta, the median temperature in the five years of weather we looked at is at or below freezing from December to March, and one day in ten in those months is colder than minus 4°C. Even in July the median is 15°C.

What to do. Pack a warm layer, a hat and gloves whatever the weather at your hotel, as the operator asks.

  6. Shoes and health rules are checked at boarding

Closed hiking or sports shoes with grippy soles are compulsory on the cable car. Pregnant women, children under 3 and anyone with heart or breathing conditions that altitude could worsen are not allowed on this tour.

What to do. Wear the right shoes from the hotel, and check the health rules before booking for anyone they might apply to.
