Amalfi Coast airports: Naples or Salerno

The Amalfi Coast has no airport of its own. Most travellers fly into Naples, the big airport for southern Italy, and a growing number into Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, the small airport south-east of Salerno that reopened to scheduled flights in 2024. Both are run by the same company, GESAC. Long-haul travellers sometimes fly into Rome instead and take the fast train south. Here is how they compare for a stay at one of our ten hotels, from Positano in the west to Minori in the east.

The short answer

Fly into Naples unless a Salerno flight suits you: Naples has far more airlines and destinations, fixed taxi fares to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, and from April to early November the hydrofoils from its port. Salerno is the closer and quicker airport for Minori, Amalfi, Ravello and Scala, with an Airlink bus to Salerno station and ferries from beside it, but it has few flights. From North America, Rome Fiumicino plus the fast train to Salerno is a practical alternative. From 1 to 30 November 2026 Naples is closed for runway works: some of its flights move to Salerno, so check the airport code on your booking.

Naples AirportThe main airport for the coast, at Capodichino on the edge of Naples, with 13.3 million passengers in 2025, 41 airlines and 128 destinations from one terminal. Fixed-fare taxis go to Positano for €145, Amalfi for €155 and Ravello for €160; the Alibus reaches the station in 15 minutes and the hydrofoil pier in 35. It has a paid lounge and a €9 Fast Track, but closes every night from 22:30 to 03:30 and for all of November 2026.Best for Most travellers: the widest choice of flights, Positano and Praiano, the hydrofoil in season, and anyone combining the coast with Naples or Pompeii

Who flies where

Naples is the airport with the choice: 41 airlines in 2025, including British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Volotea and ITA Airways, with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Air France, KLM, Iberia, Turkish Airlines and flydubai for connections. Salerno is much smaller. Aeroitalia based an aircraft there in 2026, with flights to Milan Malpensa, Genoa, Trieste and Turin, and Wizz Air starts Budapest, Tirana and Warsaw on 6 June 2027; other airlines fly seasonally, so check its routes page for your dates.

Getting to the coast

Salerno is closer to the eastern half of the coast. From its terminal the Airlink takes about 30 minutes to Salerno station, and from the quay beside it Travelmar sails all year to Maiori in 30 minutes, Minori in 40, Amalfi in 35 and Positano in 70, for €10 to €17. From Naples the simplest route is a fixed-fare taxi, €145 to Positano, €155 to Amalfi and €160 to Ravello, tolls extra. In season NLG's hydrofoils run from Molo Beverello to Positano and Amalfi for about €32; all year you can take the Alibus to Napoli Centrale and a 36-minute train to Salerno for the same ferries.

Flying into Rome instead

Yes, if Rome has the better long-haul flight. From Fiumicino the Leonardo Express reaches Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14; from Termini, Italo runs ten fast trains a day to Salerno in 1 hour 39 minutes from €14.90, and Trenitalia's Frecciarossa runs the same line. At Salerno, walk to the Travelmar quay beside the station for the ferry to Amalfi or Minori. It is a long day after an overnight flight, so it suits travellers who want a night or two in Rome first. Our Rome Fiumicino guide covers the airport itself.

Ease, lounges and hours

Naples is the more equipped airport: the Pearl Lounge after security at €44 (GESAC's price to 31 October 2026) or with Priority Pass, a €9 Fast Track, left luggage, cafés, restaurants and shops on two floors, and two hotels close by. Salerno is small and quick, with a café in the check-in hall. Neither stays open all night: Naples closes from 22:30 to 03:30 and Salerno from 22:30 to 05:00. From 1 to 30 November 2026 Naples is closed for runway works, some of its flights move to Salerno, and a bus links Piazza Garibaldi with Salerno airport for €12, eight a day each way.

Which airport for our hotels

For Le Sirenuse, Palazzo Murat and Il San Pietro in Positano, and Hotel Tramonto d'Oro in Praiano, fly into Naples: the fixed taxi fare and the hydrofoil make it the easy choice. For Hotel Santa Lucia in Minori, Hotel Marina Riviera in Amalfi, Caruso in Ravello and Palazzo Pascal in Scala, Salerno is worth checking first, since the ferry from Salerno station reaches Minori and Amalfi in under 45 minutes. Borgo Santandrea and Monastero Santa Rosa, between Amalfi and Conca dei Marini, work from either. Our transfers page will have the timed and priced way from each airport to each hotel.
