Where to stay in Fuerteventura: the lively north, the airport coast or the long beaches of the south, area by area
On Fuerteventura the first choice is between the north, with Corralejo, its dunes and the boats to Lobos, the east coast by the airport and the capital, and the far south, with the Sotavento lagoon and Jandía's long beaches, about 105 minutes' drive apart, with a hire car close to essential away from the towns. This guide takes the seven areas worth weighing, in the order a first-time visitor should consider them, says who each suits and what it costs you, and places each of our ten hotels where it actually stands.

The short answer
Most first-time visitors should stay in Corralejo, at the northern tip: a real town with harbour restaurants, the boats to Isla de Lobos 11 minutes' walk from the old harbour, and, off-peak by road, the Grandes Playas dune beaches 18 minutes away, El Cotillo 28 and the airport 38. For long, calm beaches and a quieter week, stay on the Jandía coast between Esquinzo and Morro Jable instead, and accept 72 to 78 minutes from the airport to our three hotels there, off-peak.
| Your trip | Where to stay |

Skip the mapCorralejo
The lively town at the northern tip, facing Lobos and Lanzarote: harbour restaurants, the boats to Lobos and nine kilometres of dune beaches just south.
Corralejo is the resort town at the northern tip, opposite Isla de Lobos; its old town is the place for a stroll and fresh fish. Its town beaches are small. South of town the Grandes Playas run for nine kilometres beside the Corralejo dunes, the largest in the Canaries: white sand made from shells, with lifeguards at El Burro.
From the old harbour, the bus station is 8 minutes on foot, the Lobos ferry kiosks 11 and Waikiki Beach 8. The boat to Lobos is a short crossing, €17 return, plus the Cabildo's free authorisation. Line 6 runs to Puerto del Rosario every half hour for much of the day, Monday to Saturday, and line 8 to El Cotillo. Off-peak, the airport is 38 minutes by road.
The cost: the far south is about 105 minutes away, and El Médano, the closest of the dune beaches to town, is used mainly for kite and windsurf.
Ours: Secrets Bahía Real, adults 16 and over, above Playa de las Agujas at the southern edge of town, sold mainly all-inclusive, from about €270 for two on half board; Barceló Corralejo Sands, in the middle of town, with a club for children of 4 to 12, from about €140 with breakfast; and Corralejo Surfing Colors, the surf base, from about €95 room only.

Jandía, from Esquinzo to Morro Jable
Kilometres of white sand and calm water on the south-east side of the peninsula, with Morro Jable's harbour at the end and Cofete over the hill.
The Jandía coast runs from Esquinzo to Morro Jable, the southernmost resort, which the tourist board says keeps the spirit of a fishing village. Morro Jable beach, 4,325 metres of white sand from Las Gaviotas to the town, has calm water and lifeguards, with shops and the Saladar de Jandía salt marsh behind it. At Esquinzo, Butihondo adds almost three kilometres of golden sand.
From Morro Jable's church, the harbour, with boats to Gran Canaria, is 16 minutes on foot. Off-peak by road, the Sotavento lagoon at Risco del Paso is 25 minutes, Costa Calma's bus station 26 and the Cofete viewpoint at Degollada de Agua Oveja 27; Tiadhe's line 111 runs out to Cofete at 10:00 and 14:15. The airport is 72 to 78 minutes from our three hotels.
The cost: the longest transfers, and Corralejo about 105 minutes north.
Ours: Royal Palm Resort & Spa, adults 16 and over, above Playa de Esquinzo, with a spa it puts at over 2,000 m², from about €155 for two on half board; Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace, a 437-room five-star above Playa del Matorral, reopened in September 2025 for families and couples, from about €355; and Riu Palace Jandía, above the Morro Jable end of Playa del Matorral, half board only, five nights minimum on most dates, from about €270.

Costa Calma and Sotavento
A sheltered resort beach at the top of the peninsula, and beyond it nine kilometres of sand and tidal lagoon on the island's windsurf and kite coast.
Costa Calma, at the top of the Jandía peninsula, has two kilometres of white sand, sheltered from the wind by the hotels behind it, says the tourist board, with two small family beaches at the north end. South-west, Sotavento is about nine kilometres of sand in five beaches, which the board calls the best windsurf and kite beach in Jandía, windiest in spring and summer. A sandbar holds a tidal lagoon, which fills in front of Playa Barca only around the full and new moon, for a few hours around the daytime high tide, about half the days of the year; it is the schools' teaching water.
From Playa Barca, at the René Egli centre, off-peak by road, Costa Calma's bus station is 10 minutes, the Mirador de Sotavento 15, Risco del Paso 22 and Morro Jable harbour 31; the airport is 64. The Gorriones bus stop is suspended.
The cost: the wind on the sand, and a car for everything beyond the beach.
Ours: ZEL Fuerteventura, adults 16 and over, opened in May 2026, 4 minutes' walk from the René Egli centre, from about €210 for two, for windsurf, kite and wing-foil learners; and Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura next door, all-inclusive only, from about €340, with a kids' club and a children's pool with slides.

Caleta de Fuste
A family resort round a sheltered bay and a marina on the east coast, seven kilometres from the airport and in the middle of the island.
Caleta de Fuste, in Antigua, is the resort seven kilometres from the airport, and the tourist board pitches it at families: golden beaches protected from waves and strong currents, and diving from the marina. Playa del Castillo, 600 metres of soft golden sand in a small bay, takes its name from the 18th-century tower by the marina; Playa de la Guirra, 700 metres of white sand with lifeguards, joins it along a promenade lined with old lime kilns.
From the tower, Playa del Castillo is 2 minutes on foot and La Guirra 20. Tiadhe's line 3 runs through the airport to Puerto del Rosario two or three times an hour from Monday to Saturday, less often on Sundays, €1.45 to the capital. Off-peak by road, the airport is 12 minutes, Betancuria 30 and Ajuy, for its caves, 44.
The cost: Corralejo is 46 minutes north and Morro Jable 77 south.
Elba Palace Golf Boutique Hotel is ours here, though not on the bay: it stands about 3.5 km from the centre, inside the Fuerteventura Golf Club, in the building that is the clubhouse of the island's first 18-hole course. Adults 16 and over, 62 rooms, breakfast included, from about €205 for two; a free shuttle makes morning runs to the beach, the last back at 12.35pm.

El Cotillo and Lajares
The quieter north-west: a fishing village with calm lagoon coves, surf schools and sunsets, and a village inland on the Corralejo road.
El Cotillo is a historic fishing village on the north-west coast, with surf, kite, paddle and wing-foil schools, says the tourist board. To the north it runs out into white-sand coves in front of the hamlet of Los Lagos, where the water is calm. La Concha, 220 metres of white sand, has a horseshoe reef that keeps the waves gentle, a lifeguard service and corralitos, low circles of volcanic stone built by residents as shelter from the wind. Lajares is a village inland on the road to Corralejo; the Calderón Hondo crater walk, a gentle 5 km circuit of about an hour and a half, lies off its road north to Majanicho.
From the Castillo de El Tostón, Playa del Castillo is 4 minutes on foot and La Concha 28. Tiadhe's line 8 runs to Corralejo and line 7 to Puerto del Rosario. Off-peak by road, Lajares and the Tostón lighthouse are 12 minutes each, Corralejo 27 and the airport 44.
The cost: small places with quiet evenings, and Morro Jable about 105 minutes away.
None of our ten is here. It makes a day out from Corralejo, 28 minutes by road from its old harbour, and suits surfers and couples who would rather wake up in the quieter north.

Puerto del Rosario and Playa Blanca
The capital and port: a working town with a beach on its bay and a longer one to the south, a former Parador from about €110, and the airport minutes away.
Puerto del Rosario is the island's capital and port, a working town rather than a resort. Playa de Los Pozos, the town beach on the bay, has lifeguards and, the council says, a Blue Flag every year since 2016. Playa Blanca, 3 km south, about 875 metres of golden sand, is the longest beach in the municipality, with lifeguards in the bathing season and, says the council, a Blue Flag every year since 2009.
From the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the bus station and Playa de Los Pozos are 10 minutes each on foot. Lines 6 to Corralejo and 3 to Caleta de Fuste leave from the capital. Off-peak by road, Playa Blanca is 9 minutes, Corralejo 31 and Betancuria 32; the airport is 8.
The cost: no resort grounds, and at Playa Blanca the runway, which ends about 1.6 km from the hotel.
El Mirador de Fuerteventura is ours here, alone on the shore at Playa Blanca: the island's former Parador, opened in 1968 and reopened in May 2017 as a hotel school, 5 minutes from the airport, from about €110 for two, room only. Aircraft noise is the catch, and the pool was out of service in 2026. It suits early or late flights and road trips round the island.

Betancuria and the interior
The old capital in the western hills: a heritage town of churches and museums, walks in the rural park, and every beach a drive away.
Betancuria, in the hills of the west, was founded in 1404 by the Norman knight Jean de Bethencourt, inland for defence against pirates, and its old town has been a protected heritage site since 1979. The tourist board lists the church of Santa María, the chapels, the old Franciscan convent of San Buenaventura, the Museum of Sacred Art and the island's Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography. Around it lies the Betancuria Rural Park, where a walk of about 4 km, some two hours, follows the Barranco de las Peñitas from Vega de Río Palmas.
From the church, the archaeology museum is 4 minutes on foot and the convent ruins 8. Off-peak by road, Vega de Río Palmas is 7 minutes, the Morro Velosa viewpoint 9, the caves at Ajuy 24, Caleta de Fuste 30 and the airport 32.
The cost: no beach, and a drive for every outing beyond the village.
None of our ten is here. Walkers can base themselves at Caleta de Fuste, 30 minutes away by road, and spend the days in these hills.

Questions people ask
Good questions about Fuerteventura
What is the best area to stay in Fuerteventura?
Corralejo, for most first visits. It is a real town at the northern tip, with restaurants round the old harbour, the boats to Isla de Lobos 11 minutes' walk away and, south of town, nine kilometres of dune beaches in the Corralejo Natural Park: Playa del Burro, with lifeguards, is 18 minutes by road off-peak, and the airport 38. For long, calm beaches and a quieter week, choose the Jandía coast from Esquinzo to Morro Jable; for kite and windsurf, Sotavento; for the shortest transfer and sheltered family beaches, Caleta de Fuste, 12 minutes from the airport.
Corralejo or Jandía?
Corralejo for a town, the dunes and Lobos: harbour restaurants on foot, the Grandes Playas 18 minutes by road off-peak and El Cotillo 28. Jandía for the beach itself: Morro Jable beach alone runs 4,325 metres, with calm water, lifeguards and a promenade, and the Cofete viewpoint is 27 minutes from Morro Jable by road. The trade is distance: the two ends are about 105 minutes apart by car, and the airport is 38 minutes from Corralejo's old harbour but 80 from Morro Jable.
Is Fuerteventura too windy?
It depends on the beach. AEMET describes the north-east trade wind over the Canaries as blowing more than half the time from autumn to spring and more than 90% of the time in summer. Sotavento shows it most: the tourist board calls it the best windsurf and kite beach in Jandía, windiest in spring and summer, and El Médano by Corralejo is mainly a kite and windsurf beach. For shelter, Costa Calma's beach is protected from the wind by the hotels behind it and La Concha at El Cotillo has stone corralitos to sit in, while Caleta de Fuste's bay beaches are protected from waves and strong currents.
Where to stay in Fuerteventura without a car?
Caleta de Fuste or Corralejo. Tiadhe's line 3 calls at the airport on its way to Caleta de Fuste two or three times an hour, Monday to Saturday, and Playa del Castillo is 2 minutes' walk from the marina tower. In walkable Corralejo the Lobos boats are 11 minutes from the old harbour; line 6 runs from Puerto del Rosario every half hour for much of the day, Monday to Saturday, €3.40, and some weekday runs call at the airport. Line 10 runs direct from the capital to Morro Jable a few times a day. Avoid Sotavento, whose Gorriones stop is suspended; El Cotillo, Betancuria and Cofete need a car.
Is Caleta de Fuste a good base?
Yes, for families, golfers and anyone who wants the shortest transfer. It is 12 minutes from the airport off-peak, its two town beaches, Playa del Castillo and Playa de la Guirra, are sheltered and calm, La Guirra has lifeguards, and line 3 runs to the capital two or three times an hour from Monday to Saturday. It sits in the middle of the east coast, so Betancuria is 30 minutes by road and Ajuy, for its caves, 44. The cost is distance from the island's showpieces: Corralejo is 46 minutes north and Morro Jable 77 south.
