The take on Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace

Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace is a five-star of 437 rooms at Las Gaviotas, on the Jandía coast in the south of Fuerteventura, above the long sand of Playa del Matorral and the eastern tip of the Saladar de Jandía, a protected salt marsh and the only Ramsar wetland in the Canaries. It reopened in September 2025 after a renovation that redid every room in the greens and terracottas of the island and the blues of the Atlantic, and added a Star Café open around the clock, the Sansofí lobby bar with an outdoor terrace, alMar, a beach-style restaurant of local dishes by the main pool, and a larger Teppanyaki Tsukiji. Once sold as adults-only, it now takes couples and families, and sells on half board with an all-inclusive option.

Most doubles are about 32 m² with a balcony or terrace and two single beds. The entry Double looks inland to the mountains of Jandía; the Side Sea-View Double catches the ocean at an angle; the Sea-View Double faces it from a terrace; the Sea-View Priority Location Double sits on the top floors. The Side Sea-View Sharing Pool Double opens from its terrace onto a pool. A step up is Star Prestige, for guests aged 15 and over: front sea views from rooms on the second and third floors, a Junior Suite of about 40 m² with a king or queen bed and a separate bath and shower, and a Suite of about 55 m² with a living room, a bath and a terrace with loungers.

It is chosen for its scale and finish. There are four pools, one of them indoor and heated, a spa with a water circuit, three restaurants and several bars, shows in the El Faro theatre bar and three direct ways down from the grounds to the beach, one of them a wooden stair that lands on the sand. At dinner men wear long trousers and closed shoes. Star Prestige works as a hotel within the hotel: its own reception, a private pool and sun terrace with Balinese beds, a lounge, an open bar at set times, a reserved area in the buffet, one entry per person to the spa's water circuit and late check-out until 14:00 when there is room.

The trade is the size and the setting. With 437 rooms the teppanyaki fills fast, so book a table as soon as you arrive. The coast here is quiet: Morro Jable is 8 minutes away by car, and the airport 72 minutes. Book it for a week of winter sun by the sea, when January afternoons at the island's airport average about 21°C, with dinner, a spa and the Atlantic all on site.

Where Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace is, and getting there

The hotel stands at Las Gaviotas on the Jandía coast, between Esquinzo and Morro Jable, on the slope above Playa del Matorral, a long sandy beach the hotel calls Jandía beach. Three paths lead down from the grounds; in front of the western pools lies the Saladar de Jandía, a protected salt marsh, with the sand and the sea beyond it. A bus stop on Pasaje Playas, the hotel's own street, is a 3-minute walk from the street entrance. On foot the Morro Jable lighthouse is 35 minutes west along the shore; the centre of Morro Jable is a short drive rather than a walk. Off-peak drives take about 8 minutes to Morro Jable, 11 to its harbour, 16 to Costa Calma, 18 to the Sotavento lagoon at Risco del Paso, 36 to the Cofete viewpoint at Degollada de Agua Oveja, 47 to the caves at Ajuy, 56 to Betancuria, 72 to the airport, 96 to the Corralejo dunes, 97 to El Cotillo and 102 to the Lobos ferry at Corralejo harbour. Outdoor parking is free.
