Delayed or cancelled flight from Stansted: what you are owed

For anyone whose flight from Stansted is late, cancelled or overbooked, including if you are waiting in the departure lounge now. Here is what the airline owes you today, how much compensation your route pays, and how to claim it, free or with help.

The short answer

Every flight leaving Stansted is covered by UK261, whatever the airline, Ryanair included. Reach your final destination three hours or more late, or have your flight cancelled at short notice, and you are owed £220 (up to 1,500 km), £350 (1,500–3,500 km) or £520 (over 3,500 km; £260 if you arrive three to four hours late), unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances. Whatever the cause, the airline must also look after you while you wait.

Stuck at London Stansted right now?

While you wait at Stansted, the airline must give you meals and drinks once the delay reaches 2 hours on flights up to 1,500 km, 3 hours on flights of 1,500–3,500 km and 4 hours on longer flights, plus a hotel and transport to it if you cannot leave until the next day. Once the delay reaches 5 hours you can choose a refund instead of flying. This applies even when the delay is not the airline's fault, so if no one helps, buy what is reasonable and keep every receipt.

What delays flights at Stansted, and which causes pay

Long delays and cancellations are rare at Stansted. In 2025, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, 70.2% of departures left within 15 minutes of schedule, 280 (0.31%) left more than three hours late, and only 222 were cancelled, 0.25% of those planned and the joint-lowest cancellation rate of the London airports. So if yours is one of the few, it is worth checking what you are owed.

Causes that usually pay compensation: a technical fault with the aircraft, crew shortages, a strike by the airline's own staff, and knock-on delays from the airline's own earlier problems. Causes that usually do not: weather that makes flying unsafe, air traffic control restrictions and strikes (including strikes elsewhere in Europe that hold your flight on the ground), security alerts, bird strikes and failures at the airport.

The burden is on the airline: it must prove the extraordinary circumstance and that it could not have avoided the delay with all reasonable measures. Ask for the reason in writing, or screenshot what the app says, before you leave the airport.

Your rights while you wait at Stansted

Care comes from the airline that operates your flight, not from the airport, so ask at its desk or in its app. Stansted has one terminal; gates 1-19 are reached by a transit train, and once you take it you cannot come back to the main departure lounge, so if a long delay is announced before your gate is shown, wait where the restaurants are. Pret, Caffè Nero and Harris + Hoole are open 24 hours.

If the flight is cancelled, you choose between a refund within seven days and a new flight at the earliest opportunity, and the airline should look at other airlines too if they would get you there sooner. You keep the right to compensation as well, unless you were told at least 14 days ahead or offered a close alternative.

Stuck overnight, the Radisson Blu is joined to the terminal by a covered walkway, two minutes from check-in, and Hampton by Hilton is a short walk away on the airport grounds. Ask the airline to book you in; if it will not, a reasonably priced room and the transport to it can be claimed back with receipts. Note that the airport's paid lounge, Essence, is not open to Ryanair or easyJet passengers.

How to claim

Claim yourself, free. Use the airline's own claim form with your booking reference and flight number, and ask to be paid in money: you do not have to accept vouchers. If the airline says no, or has not replied after 8 weeks, take it to the airline's CAA-approved dispute scheme, which is also free: AviationADR handles Ryanair, easyJet and TUI Airways, and Lufthansa uses Schlichtung Reise & Verkehr; other airlines name their scheme on their website. Apply within 12 months of the airline's final answer. If your airline belongs to no scheme, the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team can take up the complaint. A court claim in England and Wales can be brought up to six years after the flight (five years if you live in Scotland).

If you would rather not chase it, AirHelp runs the claim on a no win, no fee basis: it keeps 35% of the compensation, including VAT, if it wins, plus 15% if court action is needed, and charges nothing if it does not win.

Whichever you choose, keep your boarding pass or booking confirmation, your booking reference, receipts for anything you bought while waiting, and the reason for the delay the airline gave you.

Questions people ask

Good questions about London Stansted

How much compensation for a delayed Ryanair flight from Stansted?

The same as any airline: £220 for flights up to 1,500 km (Dublin, Barcelona, Rome), £350 for 1,500–3,500 km (Málaga, Faro, Tenerife) and £520 beyond, if you arrive three hours or more late, unless Ryanair proves extraordinary circumstances.

What am I entitled to if my flight from Stansted is cancelled?

A choice of a refund within seven days or a new flight, meals and drinks while you wait, and a hotel if you are stuck overnight. You are also owed £220–£520 compensation unless you were told at least 14 days before (or offered a close alternative flight) or the airline proves extraordinary circumstances.

Is an air traffic control strike an extraordinary circumstance?

It can be, because it is outside the airline's control, so compensation is usually not due. The airline still owes you meals, drinks and a hotel if you are stuck overnight.

Does a cabin crew or pilot strike count as extraordinary?

Generally no. A strike by the airline's own staff over pay or conditions is part of running an airline, so compensation is due if you arrive three hours or more late or your flight is cancelled at short notice. The rare exception is a strike over demands only the government could meet.

Can I claim in pounds for a flight from Stansted to Spain?

Yes. Flights departing the UK fall under UK261, which sets the amounts in pounds: £220 for Barcelona, Madrid and Palma, and £350 for Málaga, Faro and the Canaries.

How long do I have to claim for a delayed flight from Stansted?

Up to six years in England and Wales, or five years if you live in Scotland. Claim soon anyway: the CAA-approved dispute schemes need you to apply within 12 months of the airline's final answer.
