The short answer

The Regent Street lights go on on Thursday 5 November 2026 and Covent Garden's on Thursday 12 November. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland opens on 19 November and runs to 3 January 2027, every day except Christmas Day, and Skate at Somerset House runs from 11 November to 10 January. The Trafalgar Square tree from Norway is usually lit in December, City Hall says; in 2025 it was lit on Thursday 4 December.

For the evening, book Candlelight: Christmas Classics at Central Hall Westminster on 12 or 18 December, seventeen carols and Christmas songs by a string quartet, from 21 pounds with fees at 21:00. To sleep within a walk of the lights, Claridge's is 9 minutes on foot from Regent Street and Oxford Circus and 19 from Winter Wonderland, and Hazlitt's in Soho is 11 minutes from both Regent Street and the Covent Garden tree.

What only this guide tells you

One calendar, and one walking map

Christmas in London is usually sold as a list of things to see. We put the dates on them instead: each lights switch-on, market, rink and the fireworks with its 2026 date as the organiser publishes it, read on 31 October 2026, and where 2026 is not yet announced, the pattern with its source. Then every Candlelight evening between 27 November and 2 January with its date, venue, start time and cheapest seat with fees, including the two Christmas programmes, which play on only four nights between them.

Then we routed the walk on OpenStreetMap from each of our ten London hotels to Regent Street, Oxford Circus, the Covent Garden tree, Trafalgar Square, the Winter Wonderland gates at Hyde Park Corner, the Southbank Centre Winter Market and Somerset House. Two hotels put the West End lights within a quarter of an hour on foot, one is 11 minutes from the riverside market, and one in Pimlico is the quiet way to be 23 minutes from both Winter Wonderland and the Christmas Classics concert. And because Christmas Day is when London stops, with no Tube at all, we set out what TfL runs and what shuts.

The big sights, with their 2026 dates

When does Christmas start in London in 2026?

Earlier than you might think. The Southbank Centre Winter Market opens its chalets on the river on 2 November, the Regent Street lights go on on Thursday 5 November, with the street closed to traffic from 5pm to 9pm for the switch-on, and Skate at Somerset House opens on 11 November. Covent Garden switches on its lights and the tree on the West Piazza on Thursday 12 November, Christmas at Kew's light trail opens on 13 November, on selected dates to 3 January, from 25.50 pounds, and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland opens its gates on Thursday 19 November.

Oxford Street is new this year: from Monday 26 October it is traffic free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, and its lights are a Harry Potter display with HBO Max, with a Harry Potter Christmas tree in Hanover Square and a snow show every hour on the hour. Its switch-on date was not on oxfordstreet.co.uk when we read it. The Trafalgar Square tree, a gift from Norway every year since 1947, is usually lit in December, City Hall says, and stays until just before Twelfth Night; its 2026 date had not been announced, and in 2025 it was lit on Thursday 4 December. The season ends with the Mayor's fireworks on the Thames at midnight on Thursday 31 December, for ticket holders only.

The evenings to book, night by night

What Christmas shows can you book in London in December 2026?

Fever's Candlelight concerts fill the dark early evenings between the lights: a string quartet plays for an hour among hundreds of candles, under the dome of Central Hall Westminster opposite Westminster Abbey or in the Gothic nave of Southwark Cathedral by London Bridge. These are every Candlelight evening between 27 November 2026 and 2 January 2027 at the two venues, as Fever listed them, with the cheapest seat including Fever's 5% booking fee.

Two are Christmas programmes. Candlelight: Christmas Classics plays Central Hall on Saturday 12 and Friday 18 December, and Candlelight: Christmas Movie Soundtracks plays Southwark Cathedral on Thursday 17 and Saturday 19 December. The rest is the year-round programme, Hans Zimmer, Queen vs. ABBA and Ed Sheeran & Coldplay at Central Hall, Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen, Florence + the Machine, Olivia Dean and Hip-Hop on Strings at Southwark. There are none on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year's Eve.

Prices vary by date and move as seats sell. Candlelight is 60 minutes, 8 and over, and doors close shortly before the start.

The two Christmas Candlelight concerts

Is there a Candlelight Christmas concert in London in 2026?

Yes, two, with seven concerts on four nights between them. Candlelight: Christmas Classics is the one for carols. A string quartet plays seventeen pieces in the hour, starting with the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Greensleeves, through Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night and O Tannenbaum, to Let It Go, Maestro from The Holiday, Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas Is You. It is rated 4.7 from 75 reviews on Fever, and plays the Great Hall of Central Hall Westminster at 18:30 and 21:00 on Saturday 12 and Friday 18 December. The 21:00 concerts are cheaper: restricted view at 21 pounds with fees and Zone C, the middle of the balcony and the zone we would book, at 41.48, against 48.30 and 50.40 at 18:30.

Candlelight: Christmas Movie Soundtracks is the one for families who know the films: the City String Ensemble plays thirteen pieces from White Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas to The Polar Express, the Grinch and The Nightmare Before Christmas, in Southwark Cathedral, rated 4.7 from 40 reviews. It plays at 19:00 on Thursday 17 December and at 19:00 and 21:00 on Saturday 19 December. The 17th is the cheapest night: restricted view from 13.65 pounds and Zone B, the middle of the nave and the zone we would book, at 44.62; Premium had already sold out for 19 December at 19:00.

Shangri-La The Shard, London is a 5-minute walk from the cathedral, so the soundtracks evening needs no Tube at all; Artist Residence London is the closest of our hotels to Central Hall, 23 minutes on foot.

Our other London evenings in December

What else can you book in London in December?

Four more of our things to do run through December, all booked on Fever. The Murdér Express is a two-hour comic murder mystery in a mock 1930s dining carriage under a railway arch near Shoreditch, with three courses, and its menu turns festive in December. It runs Thursday to Sunday, from 87.50 pounds with fees for a Sunday afternoon and 99.50 on Saturday evenings, rated 4.7 from 1,913 reviews; Town Hall Hotel is 4 minutes away by taxi.

Soho Comedy Factory has stand-up every night two minutes from Piccadilly Circus, at the foot of the Regent Street lights, at 10 pounds most nights and 14 on Friday and Saturday evenings, rated 4.8 from 513 reviews, and 8 minutes on foot from Hazlitt's. Moonshine Saloon in Houndsditch is a Wild West cocktail evening for over-18s, from 41.04 pounds, and Body Worlds on Old Brompton Road is the daytime one for all ages and cold afternoons, adults from 19.80 pounds and children from 13.91, open until 21 March 2027.

New Year's Eve on the Thames

Do you need tickets for the London New Year's Eve fireworks?

Yes. The Mayor of London's fireworks around the London Eye at midnight on Thursday 31 December 2026 are ticketed, and City Hall says plainly that you cannot attend without one: people without tickets are not let into the viewing areas. Tickets are sold only through Ticketmaster, up to four per buyer, and you may be asked for photo ID. The first batch is on sale now and a second batch will follow, on a date City Hall has not yet given.

There are six viewing areas, each entered by its own numbered gate, and you cannot move between them on the night, so book a group into the same one. Category A, the Blue, Pink and White areas, is 55 pounds; Category B, the Red, Green and Orange areas, is 40, plus a booking fee. Anyone with a London postcode pays 20 pounds less. Blue is the stretch of Victoria Embankment opposite the Eye, a head-on view, entered from 8pm to 10.30pm; Pink is Waterloo Bridge, entered only from the south side.

City Hall restricts vehicles from 2pm on 31 December until about 6am on 1 January, so plan to walk or take the Tube to your gate. Without a ticket, TfL's advice last year was to celebrate in a bar or restaurant or watch the fireworks live on BBC One.

Where to stay for Christmas: the walk to the lights

Which hotel is closest to the London Christmas lights?

In our edit, Claridge's. From its door on Brook Street at the Davies Street corner in Mayfair it is 9 minutes on foot to Regent Street under the Spirit of Christmas lights and 9 to Oxford Circus, where the Regent Street and Oxford Street lights meet, and 19 minutes to Hyde Park Corner for Winter Wonderland. It is a Christmas hotel in its own right: a different designer builds the tree in its Foyer every December.

Hazlitt's in Soho is the one for the whole West End loop: 11 minutes to Regent Street, 11 to the Covent Garden tree, 12 to Oxford Circus and Trafalgar Square, 19 to Somerset House and 8 to Soho Comedy Factory. For the river, Sea Containers London on the South Bank is 11 minutes on foot from the Southbank Centre Winter Market and 18 from the Somerset House rink. The Zetter Marylebone is two minutes from Oxford Street at its Marble Arch end, 18 minutes from Oxford Circus and 23 from Winter Wonderland.

December is not the cheapest month in central London. Our records put January as the cheap month at Claridge's, The Ned and Sea Containers London, and have December among the dearer months at The Ned and at Shangri-La The Shard, London.

Walking routes on OpenStreetMap from each hotel's door, routed on 31 October 2026, at an even pace with no crowds; on December evenings in the West End, allow longer. Regent Street: outside Hamleys, halfway down; Oxford Circus: the junction; Covent Garden: the West Piazza; Winter Wonderland: Hyde Park Corner, the station for the Blue Gate; Winter Market: the Queen's Walk by the Royal Festival Hall; Somerset House: the courtyard. Our other hotels, The Ned, The Standard, London, The Pilgrm and Town Hall Hotel, are 30 minutes or more from most of these on foot: take the Tube.

The quieter Christmas: Pimlico

Where is quiet to stay in London at Christmas?

Artist Residence London: ten rooms above a neighbourhood restaurant and an old pub cellar bar, in an independent townhouse on Cambridge Street, a residential Pimlico street of stucco terraces. It is 23 minutes on foot to Hyde Park Corner for Winter Wonderland and 23 to Central Hall Westminster for Christmas Classics, close enough to walk to both and far enough that the street outside is asleep when you get back. The bar downstairs stays open to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, so ask for the second or third floor if you want an early night. Body Worlds in South Kensington is 7 minutes away by taxi.

The Zetter Marylebone is the other quiet choice, 24 rooms on a side street that goes quiet at night, yet two minutes from Oxford Street. And Shangri-La The Shard, London puts the city's lights below your window: the Christmas Movie Soundtracks concert at Southwark Cathedral is 5 minutes' walk away and Borough Market beside it.

December weather in London

What is the weather like in London at Christmas?

Mild, grey and short-days rather than snowy. Over the five Decembers from 2021 to 2025, central London averaged a high of 9°C (49°F) and a low of 4°C (40°F), with frost on only about four nights of the month. Snow is rare: about half a centimetre in a month on average, and none on Christmas Day in any of the five years. Rain is the likelier companion, on about 11 days of the month, so pack a waterproof rather than a heavy coat.

The light goes early. The sun sets at about 15:51 in mid December and rises at about 8am, so the lights are on by mid afternoon and an 18:30 concert is well after dark. New Year's Eve varies most: at midnight on 1 January the temperature was between -0.6°C and 12.7°C in those five years, and on 1 January 2026 it felt like -4.5°C. If you have fireworks tickets, dress for standing outside for four hours.

Getting around: Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve

Does the Tube run on Christmas Day in London?

No. TfL runs no service on most public transport on Christmas Day, the Underground included, and plan around it: taxis, private hire, Santander Cycles and rental e-scooters do run, as TfL's guide for last Christmas said. Christmas Eve services run but finish early. On Boxing Day parts of the network do not run, the Elizabeth line among them last year, and TfL said a Sunday service would run on the Underground, buses and trams.

On New Year's Eve, apart from planned closures, TfL runs services all night, but warns that central London stations may close at short notice to prevent overcrowding and that buses divert from about midday as roads close for the fireworks. Last season TfL also suspended the central London Congestion Charge from Christmas Day to New Year's Day. TfL had not published its 2026 festive guide when we read it on 31 October, so check its Journey Planner or the TfL Go app before you travel, and allow for engineering works, which TfL and Network Rail schedule over the quiet days between Christmas and New Year.
