Candlelight: Hip-Hop on Strings
Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge
4.7/5
About 36 reviews on Fever
The City String Ensemble plays hip-hop, from Gangsta's Paradise to Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre and Eminem medleys, for 60 minutes by candlelight in Southwark Cathedral. Two nights at 21:00, from 20.48 pounds with fees.
Hip-Hop on Strings is the most unexpected programme on London's Candlelight list, and the early audience likes it: 4.7 from 37 reviews on Fever on 30 October 2026. Fever lists eleven pieces, most of them medleys, so the hour covers a lot of ground. There are single tracks, Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise, Cardi B's I Like It and Drake's Passionfruit, and medleys of Jay-Z, Outkast, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees, Kendrick Lamar, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre and Eminem. Gangsta's Paradise itself interpolates Stevie Wonder's 1976 song Pastime Paradise, according to Wikipedia, a reminder of how much of hip-hop already rests on melody.
Fever's own pitch is the hooks and samples you know by heart, played on violins, viola and cello a few metres away, and an hour of them by candlelight is a very different way to hear these records. Fever names the City String Ensemble as the players and says it is a tribute.
Southwark Cathedral, beside London Bridge, keeps the form of the Gothic church built between 1220 and 1420, and became a cathedral in 1905, according to Wikipedia. The dates are 27 November 2026 and 9 January 2027, both at 21:00. Zone D is 20.48 pounds with fees on both; we would book Zone C on 9 January at 33.08, against 41.48 in November. There is no food or drink for sale at this concert. Shangri-La The Shard, London is a 5-minute walk away. For doors, zones and how the evening runs, see our full guide to Candlelight in London.
