Candlelight: Tribute to Florence + the Machine
Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge
A string quartet plays Florence + the Machine, from Dog Days Are Over to Shake It Out, for 60 minutes by candlelight in Southwark Cathedral by London Bridge. Two evenings at 19:00, from 21.52 pounds with fees.
Florence + the Machine is a London band, formed in 2007, and its singer Florence Welch was born in Camberwell, in south London, according to Wikipedia. Fever's tentative programme runs to 12 songs and leans on the first two albums. From Lungs (2009) come Dog Days Are Over, Cosmic Love and Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up); from Ceremonials (2011), Shake It Out, Never Let Me Go and What the Water Gave Me. Later songs fill out the hour, among them Ship To Wreck, What Kind Of Man, Delilah, Hunger and Free.
This is music that suits strings in a cathedral. Welch's songs are built on big, rising choruses and a choir-like sweep, and the quartet can lean into that under the cathedral roof. Cosmic Love and Never Let Me Go are slow and spacious; Dog Days Are Over, which Fever puts last, builds from a quiet start to a full finish. The show is new to Fever's London list, so it has no reviews of its own yet, and Fever names the players only as a string quartet. It is a tribute: Fever says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the artist.
Southwark Cathedral, a Gothic church built between 1220 and 1420, gives the evening its setting, with the quartet at the head of the nave and the candles around them. Both dates, 27 November 2026 and 2 January 2027, start at 19:00, early enough for dinner at Borough Market or along the river afterwards. The 2 January date is the cheaper one, with Zone B at 45.68 pounds. Shangri-La The Shard, London is a 5-minute walk away.
